  • nice good job

  • Elementary classroom music teacher here...is it ok with you if I use your method to teach this to my 5/6th graders...they would DIG this the most...THANK YOU! Excellent teaching!

  • Pana los videos los puedes hacer en español

  • Very well done.

  • I love playing this!!

  • You're instructions are extremely helpful. You're time is very much appreciated my friend!

  • yo meng very nice ... could give some bongos bolero lesson also jehehehe tnx meng nice work keep going

  • Hey, you have any video's of you jamming out?? I remember these congas being played when I was a kid in the South Bronx. I would be riding my bike and the beats would lift me up and get me going.

  • Thanks everyone for the kinds comments.

  • this is excellent. I have tried to break down guaguanco for so long, watching those videos where the guys are basica;;y just showing off, playing the pattern fast with no explanation but " watch my hands" !

You are patient, not showing off, and breaking it down to the roots...that is the sign of a true maestro who knows very well how the tones interlock. Well done and thanks

  • Thank you very much. It's been frustrating trying to learn patterns correctly without having a good teacher. I knew I was close, but didn't have it. Now I can feel confident about what I'm playing and how a real congero would do it. Your break it down in a simple and effective way that makes comprehension much easier.

    Thanks again!

  • I learned the left hand differently. We did the heel/finger tip/slap together with a double heel-fingertip then the right hand four times. Is t his a variation?

  • THAKS FOR YOUR CLASS,HELP ME A LOT!!!

    MARCELO,FROM BRAZIL!!!

  • Thanks for breaking that down into musical language. Most guys teach by feel, and I have to count later, and get it wrong most of the time. You and I count first, and practice til we get the feel. I can also watch your video, write it down, and have a record of it for later practices. Great job.

  • tremendo pana, gracias por tu video y por compartir y enseñar a la gente

tan rico que es el guaguanco.....weeeep@@@

  • great teaching style, very rare, what does everybody think about the clave is it a 2 bar

8th note pattern or is it fely as 1 measure 16ths, they say Cuban feel it as 16ths

  • @windstar1 Well, I'm not cuban, I'm miami-colombian and I grew up on their music (cuban music has a long history of popularity with colombians). But, for me, as someone who both loves the music and is a musician, it feels like the clave pattern is really one measure. Although it has an underlying cut-time feel to it (2-measure), the proper way to count and notate is in common time. In other words, everything is based off of the clave pattern. But that's just my humble opinion on it.

  • hey man, thanks alot. you hit the nail, like we say. with your tutorial, your honest intention is to teach and not to show off like many, many guys out there. for us beginners we get discourage when we see a guy "teaching". your video is excellent.

  • @joaquin03m

I agree. Definitely one of the better, if not the best, conga instructors I've found online. Thanks for sharing your skill and passion with us, Rudy. A lot of us appreciate the time you took to put these together.

  • What's up Rudy! Not bad dude. From my experience, it can seem a little difficult for people to understand the 16th note subdivision. I tend to just break it down with simple quarter notes and eigth notes. Clave is a two measure pattern, eight counts. Then I have students then work with the pulse 1 and 3. along with it. Rhythmic dictation for 16th note can be "one-e-an-da". The da is a strong syllable that defines where exactly the subdivision is. The uh is uncertain and can be ambigious.

  • Maestro you can play like all them comgueros I grew up in PR and in el barrio on east harlem in NYC... god bless esas manos, long live la rumba...

  • DUDE UR A GREAT TEACHER, PLAYED THIS OVER &OVER GREAT WAY TO LEARN. THANX GIMMI MORE

  • i have the burning desire to learn :)

  • You wouldn't happen 2 be Cuban would you?

  • I'm not... I am Mexican American.

  • Another quick question, how does one perform a slap without muting the drum with the left hand? I've seen seasoned players pull this off but cannot even come close when I try? Is its just a matter of dedicated practice and experience.

Thanks for all your sound advice.

    Dafflor

  • Hey man,

Love your videos, they've been a great help in studying the conga. I have a question regarding conga heads. I've been playing for a couple of years and I haven't changed my heads yet. The heads on my quinto and conga are made of rawhide and I'm wondering if i should keep using rawhide skins or move on to another?

I am fairly happy with my progress and I am interested in experimenting. Are certain conga heads considered amateur/professional etc?

  • excellent teaching and break-down explanation for even season drummers who can see original angles. REAL TEACHER thanks.

  • @zuddie1921 excellent teaching and break-down explanation for even season drummers who can see original angles. REAL TEACHER thanks

  • Thank you!

  • hola Rudy - I'm struggling following on the count, but i find that when you play the whole piece (slow!) I can follow much better and really get into it.

Am I being a bad student, is this a common error. I'm just learning for fun and enjoyment.

    Miguel.

  • What would a bongo player play to lock in with this? I don't mean blowing or soloing, I mean like a bongo root function to lock in with this guan guanco on the congas.
