  • This vid is popular on Belize

  • Haha, I am learning Japanese at university and we actually have one hour a week of watching these videos of "Yan and the Japanese people" and we learn from those :D

  • thankyou thankyou a lot for this course i love it

  • i have an actual copy of the textbook!

    >This Is 2011

  • Althaus = German for Old House

  • lol the effects irratate me

  • better check my episodes, they are all fully uploaded without parts. check my profile for playlist

  • @LeaYdwI

That wasn't my annotation (I allow anyone to add annotations on my videos). I removed that one after you brought it to my attention.

  • @Aploosh oh nevermind my first comments its working! sorry i didnt see the "Click here to download your file" button.

  • 3:56

    "DAT ASS"

    *CRASH*

  • @LeaYdwI very much agree, I think I'll pass on the whole series now...

  • this perfect just getting off pimsleurs :)

  • After they dropped the oranges and got in the car, I was expecting it to start playing the derp music again and then show them having a three-car pileup.

  • You really should put back some Mary Althouse jokes there...it's so dry without it....She looks like a vampire btw.....I mean...jokes ease the stiffness of this video....

  • Best annotation translation. "HAHAHA."

  • haha!! I got this with full version every episode on my computer ;) -> Only thing I am missing is the textbook, but this far I haven't needed such a thing, because the videos teaches it all without having the book.

  • I love this series lol. Thanks for the upload man... Shall help when I'm there next semester :)

  • kare wa mecha baka

  • 1:15 "modern" I loled so hard I almost choked XP

  • Also notice that doumo means very much, but it doesn't mean

    takusan (many),

    yoku (often. much),

    totemo (very),

    sugoku (very),

    itsumo (always),

    mainichi (every day)

  • doumo means very much

doumo arigatou, thank you very much

doumo arigatou gozaimasu, thank you very much (more polite)

doumo dame darou, it probably won't work)

doumo chigau rashii, it doesn't seem quite right

    doumo sumimasen, I'm very sorry

doumo ... nai, to be not quite...; no matter how hard one tries

  • domo domo domo domo.... Is domo used so much? I've never heard it used in dramas and the like so frequently.

  • Who the $%^^& translated this? what's'slut/ easy girl'doing there? Ruining the whole program

  • 5:09 ... did kaiho just flip me off? XD

  • watashi wa Turansfouma desu :P

  • ふしだらな女 <--- hahaha i'm learning more already!

  • No success downloading the textbooks! Link not working

  • heee... I love Japan

  • just fiinished watching all of the yan videos(none of the boring grammar explanations in romaji or any of the 3 japanese ppl one) and i must say this would make a good ドラマ. as for the learning series itself, this relies too much on romaji, the only romaji a learner of japanese should do is when they are learning the proniciation of the hiragana. And thats it.

  • lol, watashi wa neko desu - I am a cat

    Japanese have talking cats!!

  • Have your own Japanese teacher that will teach you the language, virtually "on call" 24 hours a day! See the video - youtube.com/watch?v=wfseANZtMNg

  • You will learn to speak Japanese naturally by understanding the culture and how the language works, lessons on our videos - youtube.com/watch?v=wfseANZtMNg

  • "iie" means "no" right? you had it say "it's ok".

  • @Veganeggroll

In that case, it was used to mean "No [it's ok]". Most japanese is context-specific, so there are a lot of omissions.

  • @Veganeggroll well, if you wanna say "it's okay' you can say "daijoubu desu. but "iie" is works too. it really depends on the situation.

  • Oh Yan, what crazy trouble will you get into next?

  • LOL gta love tht opening theme :D *grooves* i really wanna go to japan in the future so i think it'd be useful to learn Japanese.

  • Chotto sounds more "jhot-toe"

  • yeah pleeaase someone tell us where to find the text book :( this video reminds me of my japanese clases :(

  • @lulupettinelli

its in the description box 0_o

  • how do you say "you clumsy oaf!" in japanese? lol he's so clumsy but funny

  • omigod I love you for posting this! Thank you!

  • That woman is a vampire I swear.

  • i just got back from japan and i have to say that this show helped me DRAMATICALLY!! thankyou SO much aploosh for putting up the episodes!!

  • This has a nice 80's nostalgia too it lol

  • this is great! :D

  • daaammmmnnnnn this vid is ooollllddd!!!! lol

  • I acculty Downaloaded ALL the videos and text books this is a 5 star ^^ realy helped me =D

  • Heh, Althaus in German means "Old house." Sie ist eine Althaus. (She is an old house.)

  • i <3 you

  • lmao at the

    MIDDLE FINGER

  • this is only season 1

their is a season 2 which was released in the 1990's (this was released in the 1980's)

and instead of that creepy bitch called Mary Althaus, their is a japanese lady who is fluent in english in season 2 (as the teacher), although season 2 is shorter but it carries on after season 1 with more advanced japanese and follows further in the life of Yan. Season 2 also does not come with a textbook like season 1 (this)

  • @Xgloomshadow nonsense. Professor Althaus is obviously an excellent teacher, it's evident throughout the whole series.

  • Yeah, you should really lose the English stuff in there.

  • @Grundiz You do know you can just take that off by pushing the up arrow on bottom right of screen and picking top option

  • LOVE THIS SERIES!!!

But you shouldn't put so much english in.

It distracts the viewer and stops them from focusing on the actual japanese being spoken. This is meant to be a tool right? so adding all this english defeats the purpose.

  • how old a series

  • 5:10 sub messaging?

  • Amazing, thank you SO much!

  • thanks for the video!! :D i'll be pro at Japanese in no time! ;D haha

  • ganbatte !!! ^ - ^

  • I can tell the woman's an expert in Japanese. She's much better than that chinese cd where some other chinese person has to say the word.

  • this is reaaaaaly old....XD

  • I don't get any of this!

I only understand Kore, Watashino, Anatano, Sumimasen, Arigato Gozaimasu, Dozo Yoroshiku, Irashaimase....

  • thats because you dont know any gramar. There should be plenty of internet sites about lerning japanese. Videos like this one are helpful when you are learning alone from books. Videos alone, wont give you much help.

  • Yan is a dumbass XD

  • Comment removed

  • HA! HER NAME IS GREEN?! PRICELESS!!

    I agree with drlopezins

    がんばってよ!

  • this is actually a very educational video. its ok that its a little cheesey, but the approach they take to teach you is amazing. i have learned and retained a whole lot from the first 4 chapters. Obviously i know it is difficult to speak japanese if you are not living near an asian community or roll in an asian circle, but practice the words frequently all day long. Think/translate thoughts in Japanese. practice practice practice...

  • I'm going to Japan in the spring. I'm skrewed. XD

  • i feel ya. i am too.

  • @RainbowPens You're not screwed, you're ねじ込み.

  • @RainbowPens you typed this comment 1 year ago, how was the experience than?

  • @MatrixOfDynamism It was really great there! I was thankful that there were random people (not tour guides) who knew their english though... I tried using some Japanese anyways.

  • @RainbowPens How was it?

  • @Emu1gmx Japan is amazing I'm really glad I went! Don't worry; even if you go without knowing perfect Japanese, many people know English (At least the basics)!

  • @RainbowPens thats good to know^^ im going next summer. but may I ask. How much money would you say is enough for a 3-4 weeks trip? it would be a nice hotel in Tokyo and backpacking the rest of the trip. I was guessing with 15.000 - 20.000 USD is that ok?

  • you will learn A LOT of Japanese if you go through all the tapes and memorize all the words, especially if you have the supplement transcripts.

You will learn a lot more than what you will learn in most language tapes and grammar books except for writing.

  • hunh? I thot it was just a normal question, why did you remove my comment?

  • Comment removed

  • naka yubi

  • This is good

but most of the things they teach you are the extremely polite forms.

If you go to Japan talking like this everyone will think you are an old traditional person (Since they are usually more traditional and polite)

  • well most japanese are obviously very polite, they can't bow deeply enough to show ou their respect *lol*

    Still, very interesting language

  • Yes but thats old people

trust me ive been to Japan

The youth dont really bow as much. Yes their is still bowing though

but they have their own slang words and stuff (teens and young adults). In this video it shows how an old person would talk.

But still, if you go to japan talking like in the video you will survive and people will understand you.

  • When do you upload the lessons 23 to 26? :) Domo Arigato!

  • haha this used to be my favorite show when I was 4 yrs old, it's like yeaterday

  • THERE'S A BOX ON HER FACE!

  • they wrote slut girl! lol

  • textbook s down , please fix it , domo

  • Very funny. Helpful too!

  • Thank you very much, for everything

    it is very usefull =)

  • Ha ha, love this video, so eighties.

  • @katanamanat - this is why it is so lovely !! Love eighties too !

  • ughh... the cheasy 80's music O_O

  • 私はねこです はあああああ

  • LoL, I'm so proud of myself, I knew enough Japanese to understand about 75% of what they were saying.

  • this looks to freaking retarded but its great to learn the language(at least the basics)

  • lolz this is great

  • lol doumo sumimasan

  • if someone finds a working link or something to the textbook.. pls pm me... :(

  • I have it on some old hard drive lying around somewhere in my room.. if I find it I'll let you know

  • could you inform me aswell ? thank you .. i mean domo arigato

  • I've got one I found in PDF format. If you (or anyone else for that matter) wants it then PM me and I'll email it or upload it to my site for download.

I've had it for a few years but I've never used it but I'm sure others may find it more useful.

    -=The Prynce

  • Well you better upload it to your site and link us, that's easier for you, otherwise you'd be tangled with sending mails to bunch of people. Domo Arigato for offering your help ^^

  • i lawl'd at the 2nd link on the info box

  • wow... do people really bring that much luggage when traveling to/from Japan? i could understand if you were planning on living there, but... wow...

  • if you've watched the videos, Yan is actually going to Japan to work and study architecture, hence the tons of luggage.

  • WATASHIVA JAN SAN DESU! omg

  • the link for the pdf doesnt work its broken :(

  • i doubt they be that polite in America...i guess it depends....might be like..Oops sorry, my bad...but in some cases some folk would be mor elike....You stupid *%$%&!!!!

  • Yeah, I know. In America all people just care about them selves.

  • not so. not every american is a jerk although there are those who are.

  • i lawl'd :P there american jerk is outgrowing the polite american by 10-folds! its like how the idiots are outgrowing the smart people!

  • sads

  • grabe dile man ko makasabot niini

  • If you've studied Japanese for a time, click on the second link in aploosh's gray box in the upper right of the screen. I found it quite amusing.

  • i`ve just red

    rotfl

    XD

  • second link

  • æøå

  • the link for the pdfs doesnt work :(

  • i think it said 84

  • Is this from the 80's or 70s?

  • or maybe the 1920s?

  • I like the funny video!^^ :)

  • this is not basic its super basic

  • I've followed it for ten episodes now, and while it may seem intimidating at first, that's how it's supposed to be. If you follow up the video by writing down the phrases and words Althaus&friends teach you (after each skit), it's absolutely doable. You won't understand the *whole* first skit for a while, that's fine.

  • Honestly...as someone who has formally studied Japanese at the university level for 3.5 years...I don't really think these videos are an effective way to solely learn Japanese from. I think they fair better as a 'supplement' to traditional textbook methods. If you get any basic textbook, you'll find a lot of the words they are using in the first few chapters. This video is good for 聞き取り or dictation.

    がんばってね

  • The video is useful to me, thanks^ ^

  • this is basic Oo

guys give me a break i just got the news that i will go to japane in few months and i had an idea of try to get some words and phrases that will help me start at least a "Hello my name is Adwan, where is room 213" but this lesson is not basic at all it needs someone postBasic to follow up /cry

  • go to google and type in free japanese lessons...there should be 10 lessons when you g to one of them...i think its the 1st one also when your done with that bro come ack to youtube and go to my favorite and find learn japanese lesson 1 and 2...those are the basics in which you can understand how japanese use their sentences...not like the english at all....you dont know it but when your talking japanese your talking like yoda from star wars ^_^

  • perfect video

  • i will probably go to japan for 3 month when im 15 or 16, and i will lern japanse when im 14- but i think it would be good to lern it a little bit a before.

    thank u =)

  • And BTW, you can download it from any decent torrent site!

    Spread the word!

    Cheers.

  • I done the same ^^

  • This is very slow learning. Is it just me or do they seem to be really dumbing everything down? Seems like a fun but slow way to make any progress.Nice to watch though.

  • Yea, most of these language lessons start by assuming you're a donkey then move up to a cat then some other species. I tried looking at an Arabic one and the language they used is never used when we talk lol. I think formality is overdone in this one too. But I guess you have to learn the language properly first...

  • I think the most important part when learning Japanese is to get a grasp of the informal, basic grammar first, simply because it's the basics for everything else.

If you go and learn the ~masu-form at once you make a huge mistake.

The best way to learn Japanese is to start with simple declarative phrases like "hito da", "neko janakatta" and then learn the most frequently used particles - "neko wa inu janai" etc.

  • i wish i was that yan

  • Oh my... I read that link article thingy and it was hilarious ^.^ Thanks for the post~

  • Thanks Aploosh. I watched all 26 episode of this last year and it was a lot more fun than reading my text!!!

But what happened to LLJB II? There are 26 episodes in part 2 that I want to watch and they're all gone!!! Used to be on youtube!!! Does anyone know where to find them? Thanks

  • Hahaha, I remember watching this when I was first teaching myself Japanese. I was like, "WTF is this?! At least it's cute to watch xD". I love these vids, they really do help a beginner get used to hearing the patterns, tones, and rhythms of the language.

  • waaah! the torrent isn't working! ;___;

    Anyone else know a link?

  • shut up

  • Hey thanks for this post! I remember this back then :) its good to see it in YT! do you have the whole set? :)

  • This is so creepy ;-;
