I'm going to be attending the olympics closing ceremony, i am going to buy a d3100 most likely but want a lens to go with it that will easily capture people people about 100m away, what lens would you suggest of a price range up to £150? Thanks:)
I got this lens yesterday, and put in on my camera (D5000) and I noticed that when I hold the shutter bottom down it makes a humming noise followed by a click, is this normal?
I have one, on a D7000 and a D700. A bit dark, but great when you have plenty of light. Fast and sharp until 200mm, when both drop dramatically. Does not replace a "real" 300mm lens, but hey: it costs a lot less than one! If you ask me, I'll say it's a great bang for the buck.
@17darkbeat Yes it is, although it's designed for FX your DX D3100 will hit the middle sweet spot of the lens so vignetting should be reduced. However, having owned a D3100 and used this on my D7000 I think it may be a bit unbalaced as that camera is really lightweight and this lens is not. I had the 55-200 on the D3100 and got some great pics out of it - really good lens and well balanced on D3100 as it's light as a feather.
On my last comment I mean like a list which I compare, I noticed u mentioned the 55-200 and the 70-300 at the end of the review in short. And again, good review
Good review, I also watched the 55-200 VR review, I think the 55-200 will be a nice expansion for my D3100 because I have a 18-55 VR lens on it at the moment. Which would you recommend: the 55-200 or this 70-300 (both VR models).
And what is the difference in price, weight, VR (55-200) and VRII (70-300), f4-5.6 and f4.5-5.6, and what about the manual focussing, the autofocus speed and the build quality? Actually whats the entire comparisment of these two lenses? Thanks for answering in forward!
@llBartll I've had both and I've owned the D3100. The 55-200 is much lighter than the 70-300, in fact it's not much different to the kit lense (18-55 VC). I would use the 55-200 on a D3100 as I think the 70-300 will be unbalanced on the D3100 (try it out and you'll see what I mean) . I would recommend that you upgrade your kit lens on the D3100 and the Tamron 17-50VC is a cheap but good bet - focus can be hit and miss but it's really sharp and will blow your kit lens out of the water.
I bought nikon d90 kit and I got 18-105mm f3.5 with kit, now i m looking for a zoom lense, I need your advice in it. which one is good? 70-300mm or 55-200m?
I seriously think you make some of the best videos on Youtube, in general. I'm disappointed when I have to watch someone else do a review on something camera related, because you haven't gotten around to it yet.
Great video. I want to buy a Nikon Camera for Dental Aplications!! Which one do you recomend? D40, D80, D90, or D5000 and also please which macro lens, 105, 200 or 300. I want the best results, but i don't know which one buy! Thank's Gordon. You are a great teacher in this.
@rupertoruiz The choice of focal length depends on how close you'd like the lens to be to the subject. Please feel free to discuss this in the Nikon section of the cameralabs forums.
@rupertoruiz You may want to check out the newly released Nikon D7000. I have the Nikon D40 with the 70-300MM lens and it's a great combination. I'm planning to upgrade to the D7000 this winter. I'll continue to use the D40 with my wide angle lens.
it amazes me how many people don't actually listen to the reviews they are watching. Gordon said "...af-s. which means it will work with ALL nikon's dx format camera bodies..." that means: d40, d40x, d60, d5000 etc. if your nikon camera has an f-mount, it will work with it, whether it has a ccd sensor, a cmos sensor, or even 35mm film
Hey gordan, I just love your reviews and cause of you i bought a D5000 and I'm very happy with it. I got it with the 18-55mm Kit Lens and now a better zooming lens would be great.
What do you think of the Sigma 70-300mm, f/4.0-5.6 DG OS, Nikon?
I'm not sure why I should buy the Nikon one, cause I'd also need it for filming and when the Zoom is so stiff it wouldn't look good in the film...
do you have any other recommendations?
Cuz i also like macro stuff and it's difficult with theses lenses
aloha, gordon. i got the same exact lens using it on my nikon d90. i notice when i hit the shutter half way i hear a tick. is that normal? thanks in advance.
Hi Gordan, great review. I just wanted to ask if this would be ideal with the D5000? you said something about the difference between a fullframe and cropframe body? I didn't quite get that..
Hey Gordon, Grettings from Caracas, My name is José and I am a very fan of your page and reviews.... I need your help, I have a D90 with a Nikkor 35mm 1,8, 70-300 mm (non VR) and a 18-55mm vr lenses. Wich one do you consider I should adquire: a 70-300 mm VR ( and sale out the old version) or a nikon 80 mm 1.8... i really appreciate your advice. Thanks in anvance and BR. José
This was the first time I ever heard someone say that when used with a cropped sensor, the field of view is reduced by 1.5x. I never even though about it like that..... usually everyone brags about how the zoom is actually increased by 1.5x. Thanks for a new perspective! No pun intended......
hi gordon i am new to photography an have jus purchased a nikon d5000 with the 18-55mm lens but it doesnt get in close enough i want high quality images and video prefeablly with an auto focus option if i want to use it i want a high zoom with not a lot of budget ......if u cud give me the low , mid and high end options i have for my needs i would be very greatful..............also thanks for your upload of the d5000 it was the reason i picked the camera in the 1st place 5 stars
Can you tell some pretty cheap thing (dont remeber at this moment the name for that tube), wich could take good wide photo (about 3-10 guys should fit in one picture (From shoes to head)). Im using an Nikon D3000 camera, with 18-55mm.
Cool review. I bought this lens before reading your review but it appears I made the right choice! I even have the exact 18-70mm lens you're talking about as well. I think the two complements each other perfectly.
hey gordon I have quick question. which on is best Nikkor 70-300mm VR or AF-S DX NIKKOR AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm? I have nikon D90 with 18-105 and I want to have lens that I could zooooooooom better . thanks Gordon Pls do reply
@madzniburkle If you're keeping the 18-105mm, I'd get the 70-300mm. Don't forget you can support me by shopping for anything at the partner stores page at cameralabs . com!
@madzniburkle BOTH lenses are good - you can't say whats better it depends the use you give. What do you mean with "zoom better" ?? with more distance??? 30 mm could help, - "more aperture in long distances ?? " then search for a lenses with a better aperture .
@madzniburkle i had the exact same question as you , it was tempting to use the 50-200 as a general use one but i think am going with the 70-300 , what did you choose ?
I've heard fairly negative comments about the sound of the VR function; that it's loud and disruptive.
What do you think? I'm going to be needing to take quite a few photos of a few plays in the coming weeks, and as you can imagine I need the quietest lens
thank you so much for the effort. I have this lens and I have the tamron 70-200mm 2.8 and I think the tamron gives me a good zoom range also on my d300. do you think I should sell the 70-300mm? i didn't make any comparison between them in terms of focal length with actuall pictures though.
Gordon, as i did watching your FZ 28 video which helped me to buy my FZ 28, this video also helped me to go for this one + d3000 18-55 kit instead of a d90 + 18-105kit.
i know some day i'll go FX and this will make things a lot easier (and cheaper)
Greetings From B.A., Argentina!! you are a very respected guy here!! thank you again!!
@pestomarquillos You're very welcome! I'm not sure if you buy online form USA stores, but if you do, please check out the partner stores page at cameralabs . com - it's the only way i get paid!
@cameralabs Hey Gordan, just wondering if you could give any advice on starting photography. I am planning on buying the D3000 with the 18-55 vr kit lense, as i think this is a great starter dslr. Would you agree? and also my friend is upgrading to the D700 FX, he has the 18-55mm DX and 55-200 DX lenses, and the 50mm f1/8 and the 70-300mm, what will the FX camera do to the DX lenses?
@JBICK666 hey I bought D90 with 18-105. best for starter like me. i have my camera before vancouver winter olympics and so friendly user and love it better than my boyfren haha jk. Since im getting used to my lens so I want another Lens
Could you provide the exact page where the information is there. Your website is filled with useful information, however there is no search feature to make it easier to get information.
hi, I am interested in knowing how much of a difference the VR lens makes. Please could you give me some information and some sample images showing the difference.
I have a question about VR. VR is known to reduce vibration blur. So can you provide some sample images with and without VR? The reason is the same lens without VR is availble for 1/4 the price.
I own a Nikon D40X and I want to get a large zoom lens, I'm rather new to this so I don't know what to look for, I would like something that can take clear crisp action shots at a long distance, so any help would be really appreciated. Thanks
Hello gordan, Could you please tell me the difference or the picture quality between 70 - 300 VR and non VR model beside Vibration reduction? is it so bad in picture quality (when zoom to full 300 mm) in non VR or sigma APO macro lens (70 - 300mm) compare to this lens on this video ?
When fully zoomed in to 300mm, the lens extended somewhat less than I thought. My older EF 75-300MM lens for my Canon SLR, extends quite a bit at 300mm xD!
i am a great fan of gordan...i bought my d5000 after i saw his review...he is 99.9999% correct always. just look at all his reviews and u will see that they all look alike...his style of review is very professional. i am a big fan of u sir and i recommend ur reviews to all my friends...!!
is there a cheaper model of this ? im only 14 (dont want to spend too much on 1 lens lol)and want to get a telephoto lens for my nikon d3000. please recommend me on something !
It's a little sticky...you can't zoom super smoothly, but it feels very solid. The feel definitely isn't a problem for picking a focal length, unless you plan to do a bunch of video or something.
hi, I have a general question: when I use long focal length to follow birds, shall I turn the VR on or off? I'm thinking, since I move while shooting, VR must be adjusting / trying to keep the lens / image to the previous position; but on the other hand, VR seems necessary especially for shooting with long focal length... I really cant figure out how it works out....
VR is meant for static objects, for shooting birds u need a fast shutter speed since VR doesnt freeze really it just stabilizes the the image in the viewfinder when u wanna take a pic where there is low light.
I have a D80 and am choosing between a Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens, or a cheaper one from sigma or tamaron. I really need the focal length and the VR, but is the Nikkor really worth what they charge?
I`m going for the Sigma 70-300 with APO, don`t get me wrong this NIKKOR is way better. The Tamron 70-300 is better then the Sigma 70-300 without APO. But the Sigma with APO is way better then the tamron.
I am starting off on a photojournalism degree and I am selling my car. I want to spend the money on a good camera. I have decided to go for the D700 24-120mm kit with this 70-300mm lens. Do you think that would be a good base kit? any advice would be apreciated. Oh and thanks for posting these videos. very good.
Ok thanks for the advice. At the moment I'm using a D40X with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. I think that the kit I mentioned would be a nice upgrade to this. I will be keeping the d40x as a 2nd body. It's nice that I will be able to use the 70-300mm lens with that aswell. Can't wait to get my new camera lol.
I'm just starting out on the degree. not with my career. I photograph boxing events. I need this camera. I've tried and tested lower spec models and I want this. I require this kind of camera for my work aswell as my degree course. I'm not getting a D80 lol.
Call a rocky but i dont know what dose the mm repreasent and i dont know if the number is bigger let say like 400mm or 600mm dose it mean that you can photography from longer distance?? please replay
Hello, i own a full frame Nikon camera and i want to buy a telephoto lens but i don't know which one should i buy the Sigma 50-500 or Nikon 70-300mm. Which one is better?
Hi, I own a Nikon D80 with a standard 18-55mm VR lens. I've wanted to buy the much popularized 18-200mm VR lens for some time, because of it's reviews, high price and versatile (only lens needed) use.
However it does suffer from creep, whereas the 70-300mm VR doesn't suffer from creep, zooms much further, and is cheaper!
Could you tell me why the 18-200mm VR is more expensive and how would you compare it to a 70-300mm VR lens?
I myself was tempted to buy this lens but had serious reservations about the price too. It covers a focal length of two set lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm).This effectively covers the equivalent of these two lenses without the need to remove the lens (dust, ect).
In terms of creep, Ive had lenses in the past which also suffered but I only noticed it when I angled the camera upwards.
It is really expensive and I understand your need to check this stuff out. I ended up buying the 70-300mm VR.

@aul220 yes every lens that says af-s is if it will work and focus if it only says af it will not focus because it does not have a internal motor

thank you so much for the effort. I have this lens and I have the tamron 70-200mm 2.8 and I think the tamron gives me a good zoom range also on my d300. do you think I should sell the 70-300mm? i didn't make any comparison between them in terms of focal length with actuall pictures though.
thank you again

Gordon, as i did watching your FZ 28 video which helped me to buy my FZ 28, this video also helped me to go for this one + d3000 18-55 kit instead of a d90 + 18-105kit.
i know some day i'll go FX and this will make things a lot easier (and cheaper)
Greetings From B.A., Argentina!! you are a very respected guy here!! thank you again!!

I have a question about VR. VR is known to reduce vibration blur. So can you provide some sample images with and without VR? The reason is the same lens without VR is availble for 1/4 the price.

I own a Nikon D40X and I want to get a large zoom lens, I'm rather new to this so I don't know what to look for, I would like something that can take clear crisp action shots at a long distance, so any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

Hello gordan, Could you please tell me the difference or the picture quality between 70 - 300 VR and non VR model beside Vibration reduction? is it so bad in picture quality (when zoom to full 300 mm) in non VR or sigma APO macro lens (70 - 300mm) compare to this lens on this video ?
thnx

When fully zoomed in to 300mm, the lens extended somewhat less than I thought. My older EF 75-300MM lens for my Canon SLR, extends quite a bit at 300mm xD!

Is it me, or are you using the same sample images as used on your 55-200 review?
The portrait of the woman at 4:50 looks like the very same image as the one for the Nikon 55-200 review...
For the sake of your reputation I DO hope I am wrong...

How would you describe the feel of the zoom ring?
kingocarina 2 years ago
It's a little sticky...you can't zoom super smoothly, but it feels very solid. The feel definitely isn't a problem for picking a focal length, unless you plan to do a bunch of video or something.

I don't get it.. when you got a 18-70mm lens and you zoom to 70mm and than you use the 70-300mm at 70 mm you get a different result :s
135Weird531 2 years ago
I'm using the 70-300 on my D200, as a 105-450mm. My other lens is an 18-105 DX lens, so the two meet perfectly in the middle :).

hi, I have a general question: when I use long focal length to follow birds, shall I turn the VR on or off? I'm thinking, since I move while shooting, VR must be adjusting / trying to keep the lens / image to the previous position; but on the other hand, VR seems necessary especially for shooting with long focal length... I really cant figure out how it works out....
Please help... Thanks!!!
yy502tube 2 years ago
usally they can adjust to panning, but since you are shooting into the sky you would be fine with it off, just put the apature to about f8 max
fergfergferg123 2 years ago
thanks fergfergferg123 !! : )
yy502tube 2 years ago
VR is meant for static objects, for shooting birds u need a fast shutter speed since VR doesnt freeze really it just stabilizes the the image in the viewfinder when u wanna take a pic where there is low light.

thanks for your tip! : )

I have a D80 and am choosing between a Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens, or a cheaper one from sigma or tamaron. I really need the focal length and the VR, but is the Nikkor really worth what they charge?
theandyman1005 2 years ago
you should go for Tamron 70-300 mm ;)
bypp 2 years ago
I`m going for the Sigma 70-300 with APO, don`t get me wrong this NIKKOR is way better. The Tamron 70-300 is better then the Sigma 70-300 without APO. But the Sigma with APO is way better then the tamron.

I am starting off on a photojournalism degree and I am selling my car. I want to spend the money on a good camera. I have decided to go for the D700 24-120mm kit with this 70-300mm lens. Do you think that would be a good base kit? any advice would be apreciated. Oh and thanks for posting these videos. very good.
DemonicGenocide 2 years ago
That's some great kit, but please do discuss it with the Nikon owners on the cameralabs forum.
cameralabs 2 years ago
Ok thanks for the advice. At the moment I'm using a D40X with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. I think that the kit I mentioned would be a nice upgrade to this. I will be keeping the d40x as a 2nd body. It's nice that I will be able to use the 70-300mm lens with that aswell. Can't wait to get my new camera lol.
DemonicGenocide 2 years ago
Do also read the verdict page of my Canon 5D Mark II review at cameralabs . com, as it or the Sony A900 may be better for you.
cameralabs 2 years ago
That's TOO much camera and a waste of money since you're just starting out. These benefits from buying a camera would only benefit professionals.
get a d80
yumsalad 2 years ago
I'm just starting out on the degree. not with my career. I photograph boxing events. I need this camera. I've tried and tested lower spec models and I want this. I require this kind of camera for my work aswell as my degree course. I'm not getting a D80 lol.

ROBVI7 2 years ago
Hi, I own a Nikon D80 with a standard 18-55mm VR lens. I've wanted to buy the much popularized 18-200mm VR lens for some time, because of it's reviews, high price and versatile (only lens needed) use.
However it does suffer from creep, whereas the 70-300mm VR doesn't suffer from creep, zooms much further, and is cheaper!
Could you tell me why the 18-200mm VR is more expensive and how would you compare it to a 70-300mm VR lens?
jinajack 3 years ago
I'd suggest reading the verdict pages for my 70-300mm and 18-200mm reviews at cameralabs . com - I've compared them there...
cameralabs 3 years ago
I myself was tempted to buy this lens but had serious reservations about the price too. It covers a focal length of two set lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm).This effectively covers the equivalent of these two lenses without the need to remove the lens (dust, ect).
In terms of creep, Ive had lenses in the past which also suffered but I only noticed it when I angled the camera upwards.
It is really expensive and I understand your need to check this stuff out. I ended up buying the 70-300mm VR.
