I still prefer the original or Duran Duran's own "Blue Silver" version, though. I really like Deftones' version as well, but it's got a bit too much of a direct approach to me, making it kind of uninteresting to listen to ten times in a row, which is a wonderful experience when listening to DD's versions.

Considering the average singer's range is 1.5-2 and the rarity of a 4 octave range is so exceptionally rare (and even in those rare cases, more often than not it is a female vocalist who has it due to the female vocal cords being lighter than males), I would say a 2 1/2 octave range is pretty damn impressive. People seem to think that music needs to be so technical and by the book. The assumption seems to be that if something isn't displayed in a band's music "they aren't capable."

I'm a classically trained singer. My "classical" range is between 2 and 2,5 octave, but I don't use my falsetto voice when I sing, unless I do pop gigs and the song "demands" it, of course. Including falsetto, my range is at about 3 octaves. Voix mixte is used a lot in classical singing, but Jonathan goes "out" at the top of his range, the exact opposite. As well, when reaching the top notes, a classically trained singer wouldn't "press" their eyebrows. At least not good ones.

where as deftones made it into a deftones song, changing instruments and arrangements to suit their sound.

jonathon here is basically doing karaoke version of the original, and his voice actually suits this type of music alot...whereas deftones are more paying tribute to the song.
