I've heard a lot of Gay people complain about the fact that Mercury didn't publicise his illness earlier, like in 1987 when he was diagnosed. I think he did right though; he was shy and hardly did interviews.
What amazes me most of all is that he contracted this illness somewhere between 1980 - 1986, was diagnosed with full blown AIDS in 1987. Any 'normal' person would have been dead by 1988, but his sheer willpower and love of life kept him alive for 3 extra years.

Freddie could have died and they could have just put PNEUMONIA on his DC, but he chose to go public, most likely knowing that he would die within hours and told the world the truth. He actually helped spread the word that AIDS affects EVERYONE, even the rich and famous. Freddie did what he did and kept his dignity.
The Mercury-Phoenix Trust is set up to fund AIDS research.
