  • thanks for your testimony.

  • You are right; I know, because I have been there 20 years.

  • @eerakk Congrats and keep spreading your success. It's stories like yours that keeps the critics' mouth shut. I can spread the good news, but coming from a person like yourself, it holds a lot more weight.

  • @serineea That is a fantastic success story. Sometimes just health benefits of getting off medication is reason enough to start the diet. Some people have huge weight losses, but to me, it is these medical successes of disease reversal is the really cool ones.

  • My normal numbers run from 215 - 350 with the diet plan my Endocrinologist gave me to follow 65 - 70 grams of carbs per meal! On my own with low carb eating my numbers are 89 - 100 in the mornings 126 two hours after I eat!!!!!!!!! No more insulin shots for me and from 5 oral meds down to 1!!!! Low carb have saved my life!!!!! I am living proof it works. OH! and down 60 pounds!

  • @drod1970 That is simply phenomenal and speaks volumes to the state of diabetes management by some doctors. I hope some begin to wise up and start waking up to potentially life saving by eliminating much of the source of the problem.

Congratulations on being such the success story, and I hope more people follow your lead.

  • I am diabetic. I reduced my blood glucose levels to normal through a low carb diet and exercise. All good so far. Thereafter I began experiencing exercise induced hypoglycemia, low blood glucose. I don't see how pointing that out is incorrect.

  • @gphx I am not sure where any disagreed with you. As the body acclimates, many low carbers (diabetic and non-diabetic people) can exercise for hours without entering a hypoglycemic state. If you need to regulate your blood sugar more vigorously or need some additional glucose, talk with your doctor, and do what you have to do.

  • @bowulf That was in reference to one person's point in your presentation that keto diets can make diabetes more tricky to manage. That's true for many - in the short term. Lows can be scary and more immediately dangerous than highs and some people run high on purpose to avoid them risking longterm damage. Over the long haul though I fail to see how anything works better than keto diabetic or not so for the most part you're preaching to the choir.

  • @gphx Thanks, and thanks for your testimony.

  • I am an insulin injecting type 2 diabetic. The only time I have good control of my diabetes is when I am compliant w/ my low carb diet.

When hospitalized recently I was given a lunch of spaghetti, french bread, salad, and cake! I reminded the dietition that I was diabetic and she said that all that carb was fine because it was " portion controlled" Well, my blood sugar numbers quickly proved that WRONG. She would not budge from her thinking that 100+grams of carbs a day was OK. UGH!!!

  • @dgreen97 Don't you love when those that should know better, so fail you. I think I might be getting outside food brought in that case. I feel for you.

  • What Dr. Vernon says about TGs and HDL was proven by me: When I went low carb, TGs went from 105 to 54 and my HDL went from 52 to 65.

And this was in 4 mos without exercise (I'm 55, female)!!! I'm staying low carb!

  • @MattyOfTheVale Exactly right! It's the HDL to Triglyceride ratio that is the most important not the total number as an indicator for heart risk factors. Congrats on your success.

  • Two of the most consistent results when a person first reduces carbohydrates are a dramatic drop in triglycerides, and an increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol. These changes are so dependable that Dr. Mary C. Vernon calls them the "hallmark of carbohydrate restriction", and advised the doctors at a recent conference that they could use these two measures to inform them as to whether their patients were indeed following a low carb diet.

  • I think it's Mary C. Vernon, M.D. (of Kansas) to whom you refer, not Mary Ross Vernon.

  • @MattyOfTheVale You are absolutely correct. My apologies for the error.

  • Anyone who claims that low carbohydrate diets increases a person's risk of diabetes, needs to explain how hunter gatherer societies which have minimal carbohydrate intake in comparison people living in agricultural or urban environments, have very few diabetic cases - so few in fact that most anthropologists and missionaries who encounter these tribes say that diabetes is nonexistent in those cultures. Clearly it is the carbs that are the problem.

  • @bowulf Thank you so much for making this video. Having just buried my father two months ago because of type 2 diabetes related complications, and having a mother who is a type 2 diabetic, I really appreciate you dispelling these myths that would dissuade people from the low carb dietary approach - probably the only sound dietary approach to prevent diabetes and reverse it.

  • The Atkins Diet works well, I lost 260 at the cost of my kidneys, my bladder, my hair, my nervous system, my stomach, sure it works at the COST OF YOUR HEALTH...... anyone who does this diet for any length of time does so at the cost of ever being healthy,,,,, it should be outlawed.....

  • @brandybeckydoc Let's see my kidney function is good, my bladder never has a problem, my stomach (huh?), my hair has seen regrowth, and my health is fantastic. My marathon performance is getting better every year, and my heart function and cardiac risk factors have DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED. (I can use CAPITALS TOO.) :-)

My own doctor could not be happier, and every annual physical uses me as an example for his other patients. It should be promoted from the mtn tops to achieve a healthy life.

  • @bowulf And hence the reason behind my videos... I am trying to spread the good news and counteract the myths.

  • @brandybeckydoc you are in idiot and have no idea what your talking about... hahahahaa the human body is evolved to live on proteins and fats, do you think cavemen have oats for breaky and sandwhiches at lunch and pasta at dinner??? wake up to yourself dick head try putting an educated response in to this if you have any brain or knowledge.... im guessing you wont regarding your first comment.....

  • PCRM = dogmatic vegan propaganda mill.

Also, only around 4% of their members are actually physicians. Go figure.

  • In April of this I was diagnosed with type ll diabetes. I weighed alomost 400lb. I was 28yrs old.

By following Kent's Advice and sticking to a low carb diet, i've dropped 115lb of weight, PLUS by purposely keeping my blood sugars low, it gave my body the chance to increase it's insulin sensitivity. A few weeks back I asked my Dr for another G.T.T (Glucose test for diabetes). It came back clear. I'm now officially non-diabetic! :oD

    Thank you so much Kent!

  • congrats

  • Can u really be cured from diabetes??

  • Depends on the type... Type 2 certainly...

Type 1 - you can control your need for medications down to a minimal level for most people. Richard Bernstein is a type 1 diabetic and preeminent diabetes educator on low carb.

  • Being a diabetic myself, I know that when you lose enough weight, you can lose the metformin/insulin. I've done it one time and I'm working to do it again. Hopefully, I won't backslide this time.

  • Now that you know it can be done, I can imagine that is a powerful motivator to return. I was amazed by the reported rapidity than a LC approach can stop some forms of diabetes need for insulin. Just remember why you backslid the first time, and make the plans on how to avoid them this time,

Thanks for comments and hope to many...

  • hey kent i got a problem i do sports everyday (swim,jog,soccer...) and i'm in induction and i haven't lost any weight since 1week or more i'm really feeling sad and i'm wonderin why? u put so much effort and i'm not losin wieght is it normal? i feel like eatin chocolate i have been 198 pounds for long now

an other question is when i'm done with induction can i get a treat like one bar of chocolate? or it's totaly forbideen for ever? thx in advance kent

  • Start posting your food online at a place like Fitday. You should be losing, so start posting daily meals.

When you hit goal, you should be able to chocolate. It is not a post-Induction during OWL treat.

  • I have a family history of Type II Diabetes (insulin-resistance, glucose-intolerance, etc) and became a "low-carber for life" in 2000. I'm convinced that my daughter's eating disorder and my son's ADHD as well as my own serious health problems, including GI distress, mood swings, brain fog in the PM, , were the result of 20 years of a low-fat diet.. I think insulin-resistance continues to progress, so I just keep cutting carbs and increasing fat. At 56, I am thin and in excellent health -

  • Congrats that is simply fantastic!

  • The help, advice, guidance and support you give is invaluable, and your success is a constant source of inspiration. And my advice to anybody who has weight management issues, or indeed has diabetes, take an hour of your time, go through these videos, take the advice and try it out. It wont work overnight, but, if you stick with it, you will achieve results. you will see consistent weight loss, and your blood sugars will level off, often resulting in a suppression of diabetic symptoms. Good luck

  • l saw the early photo's of you and basically saw myself right there. I was so overweight, it felt like it would never come off, and losing a lb or 2 would make no difference, so there was no point in trying. However, watching somebody drop over 200lb, and to see the drastic results you got, plus, after listening to your video about Atkins and diabetes, I decided id give it a shot, I was so low that I had absolutely nothing to lose. I just wanted to say thank you so much for changing my life. ;oD

  • You are very welcome, and I am happy I could provide whatever assistance I could.

  • In April this year I was diagnosed a type 2 diabetic and I weighed almost 400lb. I went on Atkins and have followed the induction phase for 3 months straight. I've dropped over 100lb and my diabetic symptoms have completely gone. In addition my Dr told me my cholesterol levels have significantly dropped as well.

I owe it all to a low-carb diet.

  • That is a fantastic success story. You should definitely tell the people at Atkins NA your story as it is amazing what can be done. I simply can't believe the cynics still try to insist low carb and Atkins makes people diabetic and not is the powerful sure way to help cure it.

  • I moved from Atkins to a slightly higher carb diet because now I am 100lbs lighter and can tolerate a few more carbs when active. I would have been a type 2 diabetic if not for Atkins.

  • Hey..

im 19 years old, and yesterday i was diagnosed with impaired fasting glucose. My doc put me on glucophage 500mg X2

and asked me to start with a low carb diet and also a strict exercise plan..

plz temme is atkins meant for me.?

i really like your video.. they r very informative

    plz help me.. =)

  • I think Atkins could very much help you get your glucose sensitivity and insulin response back under control. I was definitely destined to by a Type 2 before I changed my lifestyle.

  • I've been doing Atkins since 1976. And, I found if anyone suffers from anything hormonally, Atkins will balance all that out by removing all the bad carbs, and extra sugars out of your body..I like to call it my "Sugar Fast" LOL. I tell people I eat only real food and Atkins is fun! It's not just bacon and eggs, cheese, fat, fat, fat..it's also berries and veggies and flavor in your food.

And, HEALTHY. Atkin's is one of my heros, and I miss him.

Thanks bowulf for your passion, you encourage us.

  • Well said.

  • Hi Kent,

I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story as well as providing all these educational videos. I have been on Atkins for 4 days now and am doing well. Is the Atkins diet good if you suffer from Depression and anxiety? Thanks again so much.

  • I have seen lots of reports that people feel better mentally on the Atkins Diet as a lot of the roller coaster of hormones seem to settle down. Certainly some of it is due to seeing success on their diet, but I think it goes further than too as people start to eliminate the junk and processed foods from their diet. I won't say Atkins cures Depression, but it certainly doesn't hurt past the can be traumatic Induction flu period.

  • Thanks for your insight. Keep up the videos. They are a great service. God Bless!!

  • ive been on atkins for 4 months and dont get migraines anymore at all, previously i used to get 2-3 serious attacks a week ...coincidence..i think not...i love atkins,

  • thank you! Do you have an OWL video. I can't find it.

  • Yep, it's called Atkins Diet: Owl - End of a Good thing? If you google that, you will find the right video.

  • This is great info! My Docter opposes to this diet because most people cannot stick to it; adding that it then becomes a danger to your health because if you're eating all that fat, you gain twice as much if you go back to eating normally. becoming bored with the limitations during the first phase has been my challenge. Since I have more than 60 lbs to lose, I tend to extend the phase one longer than 1 week which adds to the risk of cheating because of the limitations. Thoughts?.

  • I would suggest you watch my OWL and Extended Induction video.

Moving on to OWL doesn't necessarily mean your weight loss will be slow down. I recommend EI for those who one don't want the extra food choices (risk of cheating in them much lower) or are battling keeping their eating behaviors. If you don't match those two groups, you should move on to OWL and the new food selections. Long term you will be more successful.

There is no reason for boredom with the number of LC recipe sites.

  • I went to see a doctor about gastric bypass surgery (GBS) and because it was such a long wait for it, I suggested Atkins and asked what he thought. He said it was an excellent diet for diabetics! This from a specialist in obesity and diabetes!

BTW, I heard as did my endocrenologist, that GBS may actually cure diabetes! Apparently some study showed patients completely recovering from it.

    (Google GBS and diabetes)!

They should open more GBS centres!

Great vids btw!! Thanks for these!

  • That is great that some doctors are open to old ideas brought new again. That is the reason I laughed when the critics said it made more likely to be diabetic. There is definitely hope to be medication free on low carb for Type 2 and Type 1 getting more regimented. Thanks for watching and the comments.

  • I give my thank you for posting this video. I personally have a hard time explaining why I think dropping carbs would help diabetic patients. I wish the world was more informed on individual macro nutrients.

I read Gary Taubes last year helped me understand the insulin pathway much better. I wish my recall of it was better since its been a few years since I read it. Since my brain injury my recall is not so great. Luckily much much better then when I was first released from the hospitals.

  • Thanks SO MUCH for speaking the TRUTH regarding carbohydrates and it's relation to type II diabetes!

  • You are very welcome!

  • Thanks Kent for yet another great video......

  • Thank you!

  • The Atkins Diet works great for my diabetes!

  • Congrats! Have you been able to reduce or eliminate the need for insulin?

  • I'm not on Atkins anymore. I have to follow a low-fat diet to keep my calories down, but I still watch my carbs. My diet is meat, dairy, and vegetables for the most part. I am at risk for diabetes (I take after my Dad) and I don't want to go there. I do eat fairly high protein, but I have no kidney issues to worry about. I just watch total calories and net carbs, :)

  • Thanks for commenting and letting know there is life post-Atkins if they determine its not for them. Diabetes is definitely insidious, and the real shocker is that up to 2008, the actual recommendations was causing more problems than helping.

  • good info bro, as usual

  • I was borderline when I started this diet, and knew if I didn't do anything I was heading straight to being a diabetic like my grandmother. I almost got mad by the end of the research about the hypocrisy of the ADA prior to 2008. We are concerned about the possibility of CVD due to high saturated fat (more myths), but people are DYING from CVD with our low fat recommendation.

Thanks for watching and commenting... Now how do I get into your nutrition hall of fame? :-)

  • I'm gonna put you back on the Hall-you were on but then I thought you quit youtube haha so I took you off but good to see you're back making videos!

  • WOW I can't believe this lol...when I had Gestational Diabetes during my pregnancy a few months ago, the doctors told me I could only have 60 carbs per day...practically atkins for pregnant women! Bowulf you are so right lol...people make no sense.

  • Yep, the medical establishment has completely lost their way regarding low carb. There are some enlightened people doing great work or following the new studies (like your doctor), and then some who are so entrenched in the "old" ways, which are relatively recent historically speaking.

It might take one or two generations of medical school doctors to correct this low fat myth. Gary Taubes is certainly helping expose the myths in current thinking.

    Thanks for watching!
