Is it just me, or is Anthony Perkins' acting in this otherwise classy movie just about as wooden/hammy as you've ever seen? I remember thinking this way back in '79 when I first saw the film - his lack of acting talent in this kinda spoiled it for me a bit.
1:34 when he says "What basis in fact do you have for these macabre speculations" - truly awful acting!
Anybody who likes this movie has no right to complain about Keanu Reeves's acting. I'm not talking about the robots, but the robotic actors. The only guy emoting at all is the fat old dude who found the greenhouse.
If anyone knows who made the humanoid robot facemasks or alternatively knows someone who can make identical replicas - could you please let me know, thanks...
I think it's interesting that even with the technology they had at the time, the notes and formulas for the anti-gravity technology was written in a book, not a tape or disk or something along those lines.
@bartholomewfargo Reinhart says that he's a romantic, so in that regard it makes sense. He wasnt somthing more dramatic and poetic than a computer disk, he want a hand written tome, to impress upon everyone how brilliant he is that he figured this all out himself and not some computer
@weldonwin With all the technology today, in the end a real, object of creativity, of either art or the written word, will be worth more and thought of more than anything of that created in the virtual world...Perhaps Reinhart understands this too...
@smp156 Whenever I look at cosmic phenomena I can't help but think there is no way something as incredible as the universe could exist without God to create it.
@dahanks1 How can those guys in Star Trek where skin tight uniforms around Beverly and Deanna and not pop embarrassing boners ruining scenes on a daily basis. Must be an actor's commitment to his craft!
@ummagumma00 I dunno, but they must be very dedicated. Either that, or there were a lot of outtakes. Luckily for me, none of my costars were ever that hot.
I take it from your response, however, that you tend to agree; Star Trek TNG babes are infinitely hotter. :-])
about Reinhardt asking McCrae what changed her mind: in the novel, which was written from the movie script, there is a scene where he convinces her to stay "to carry on her fathers work"
Its impossible to see the clip of how nasty the crew really looked because Disney cleaned them up, it was to shocking at the time. This was when the movie originally came out in 1979 (I was 13 at the time). The look of the crew when the mask was taken off were zombie like with dryed up skin and bugged out eyes. you might be able to see it if you find some old disney vhs tape from the early 80's.
@triton115 They couldn't. It would take them too much time to get all the shattered pieces off the Cygnus. By then, would've been spotted by maybe Maximillian or other sentry robots.
Vincent: How long before they start searching for these two?
Bob: That depends on their duty schedule. That could be anytime.
@4226kw They could have perhaps temporarily disconnected the tubed pathway to the Palomino and thrown the shattered pieces off the Cygnus through the doorway, out through the forward elevator, and then the wreckage could have just flown harmlessly and unnoticed into space and perhaps even into the black hole.
If you want a specific indication Reinhardt took for Kate's wanting to stay, it is simply that, like Durant, she did not leave with the others during dinner.
Reinhardt and Durant seem to have a thing going - lol... the facial expressions are pricelessly hillarious... Maybe Kate though - nah... I will just be a third-wheel... you guys go one withouth me... lol.
Another inconsistency I've noted. Reinhardt asks Kate what changed her mind about accompanying him and Alex into the Black Hole, but she never indicated that she wanted to go. Either the script was piss poor, or there is a scene missing where Kate and Reinhardt discussed her remaining aboard and communicating telepathically with Vincent to let them know what was happening.
@Tommykey07 *Sigh* Reinhardt is ASSUMING Kate would want to stay. You need to learn about body language! He hasn't seen a female in 2 decades. She's also a scientist. And she has ESP. He finds her extreemly interesting. Notice where he seats her at dinner. It's obvious he sees Alex as a protoge. Notice how Alex keeps pumping up Reinhardt's ego.
