this is one of the first videos of sly i've watched. the first time i saw it i thought sly was gay because of the way he says " you ain't no boss" .as it was the firts time I discover him.
I agree with the above person that Prince is one of the best things since Sly. Those two and Stravinsky understood rhythm as well as anyone in the 20th century. I urge everyone to listen to all of Sly's albums, the the first few are wonderful, Stand has the most hits on it, and There's a Riot Going on is the darkest and my personal favorite -- if you want to hear deep deep funk try the song "thank you for talking to me africa."
So true man I was born in the 80's and my dad raised me on respecting the greats. I LOVE Sly & the Family Stone know most of there songs. Also greats like Prince MAN true music is hard to find. That's when pushing the envelope in music was just expected now of days ppl are to scared because they don't wanna risk a pay check!!!!
Damn right... and even WORSE, most people are just bending over to pick up a cheque... its all about the Video of it all now, and how GAY do you look... and the Milli Vanilliism of it all... its down that toobes...
He burned out, mainly on coke, but never fully recovered. You can find a couple of biographies of him on Amazon. The depths were pretty deep. It is all very sad. No one else combined the vision, the diverse band, the horns and costumes, the message.
I am among those in this list who was there way back then. Sly's first two albums were the first LPs i bought with my own money. I bought every album the day it came out, and saw the band at Northwestern University about 1972. By then he was showing up really late and sparking riots but he was still the greatest.
We all have family affairs in our families. so many black sheep in the world that I want to weep.they bring so much to the table and their thinking is so deep. COME TOGETHER/RIGHT NOW/OVER ME. Dresser1474
Thanks for posting this. What a great piece of film! Where did you get it from? They look great here, and There's A Riot Going On is a masterpiece, one of those albums that I, personally, never get tired of listening to. Shame that drummer Gregg Errico had left by this time. I bet he must have been kicking himself after they released this album!
After the bizarriness that took place during the making of that album....he needed to leave and get himself together. He helped play on an Santana album with Buddy Miles. and he briefly joined the group Weather Report so it unfortunate that he left but the album remains a work of art for its time.
It was unfortunate for sure...I really liked Gregg Errico...(I find it hard to imagine him in Weather Report, tho')...well, I liked all of them...it's noticeable 'cause he's missing from the album inner sleeve pictures, and also 'cause there's a very early and innovative use of a drumachine on There's A Riot Going On...not a great work of art "of its time", (I have to disagree with you there, but only slightly) but of all time!
James Brown was too black for white people.Jimi Hendrix was too white for black folk.Sly was the first to bridge the gap and create crossover and funk at the same time.
"speak for your self doug" its whos got the good's ..dance I know you love it JB JH ..or ss what about mose A or benny G there an't no color in talent
This man is truly a genius, I had no idea until recently he produced songs for a number of rock groups at the time. I hope he has kicked his drug habit for good, then maybe he will go back into the studio to grace us with more of his genius.
Great clip collection, but good lawd, me and my song was bent over in stitches with the, ' you ain't the boss' and the wacked out wink that he gave...In all honesty I Love Sly,though. It's a Family Affair...
I grew up listening to this stuff...so thankful I got to see them all perfom in Vegas a little over a year ago, poor sly was in a neck brace, but still rocked the house! This is GREAT SOULFUL MUSIC, thanks you for letting me be myself sly...AGAIN!!
GOD..so many bullshit comments on this song. unreal... why no one has posted that this song is probably one of the greatest songs of the 20th century? AND no exageration...
Nobody gives a shit about anyone's half-baked fishing stories about "what's gonna happen in 2012."
If you want to hear some empty, meaningless bullshit predictions about the future, wait for 10 minutes and I'll pack my bong and get back to y'all... I can guess with the best of 'em, if anyone gives a shit.
Hi. Can anybody tell me what should I do to get that bass sound? It's amazing...!!! He's playing whit a Pick? Is a Fender Jazz? Is Larry Graham mutting his strings? SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!
In an interview I heard Larry Graham say that Sly (using a pick) played Bass on "Family Affair" and that he (Graham) didn't even know about the song until he heard the record. He also said he felt Sly was using the song to tell the rest of the band something.
your tie to your family is ultimately stronger than any obstacles or problems you may face. you essentially love your family unconditionally. that's my take, anyway.
Yeah, I understood that but why mud? Blood is Not thicker than mud. He could have said blood thicker than water, maybe that doesn't sound as good, I guess. Sly still rocked back in the day though.
Yeah, that's it. Blood being the dirt going on in the family. You got it, "robotscantadib." I didn't take it literally I just wanted someone to dig in the inerior for a better meaning than what I had.
The song is "Luv N' Haight". 'Tis the first track from "There's a Riot Goin' On", the most classic of classics, the darkest funk EVER, for which this is a promotional clip. It's so cool that I almost don't believe that the record company put this out there.
Just heard Sly and the band are coming to London on July 21st. Bought a ticket pronto. Just hope he shows. It'll be a once in a lifetime chance. He can do a set of Kylie covers, I don't mind, just wanna see the legend before he shuffles off..
I just saw Sly perform last night in San Jose. He is nothing like this video, I'm not happy to report. He was slot, hunchbacked, lacking confidence, and probably paranoid. On the other hand, his voice was in excellent shape. He sang 2.5 songs and walked off the stage! Oh well, that's better than the 2 minutes he did at the 2006 Grammys.
