  • enjoy the ARTS

  • A blizzard of coke consumed during the making of that album.

  • LOL. NYC. Same with Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic and ROCKS.

  • Great music and a fun clipskie

  • this goes back to college days! Party, Party, Party!

  • TOP TRACK,WHAT DO YOU THINK JUAN.

  • This is the first song ever recorded wit a Drum Machine! Classic

  • Sly wuz like gawd to me.

He was everything I ever wanted to be.

I'm so grovvin, what the hell happened?

    You can't burn that bright.

    When you love the night.

    Train.

  • last part

I agree with the above person that Prince is one of the best things since Sly. Those two and Stravinsky understood rhythm as well as anyone in the 20th century. I urge everyone to listen to all of Sly's albums, the the first few are wonderful, Stand has the most hits on it, and There's a Riot Going on is the darkest and my personal favorite -- if you want to hear deep deep funk try the song "thank you for talking to me africa."

  • So true man I was born in the 80's and my dad raised me on respecting the greats. I LOVE Sly & the Family Stone know most of there songs. Also greats like Prince MAN true music is hard to find. That's when pushing the envelope in music was just expected now of days ppl are to scared because they don't wanna risk a pay check!!!!

  • Same here, I also have my dad to thank for introducing me to 70's soul and funk. Just awesome and uplifting music.

  • Damn right... and even WORSE, most people are just bending over to pick up a cheque... its all about the Video of it all now, and how GAY do you look... and the Milli Vanilliism of it all... its down that toobes...

  • part 2

He burned out, mainly on coke, but never fully recovered. You can find a couple of biographies of him on Amazon. The depths were pretty deep. It is all very sad. No one else combined the vision, the diverse band, the horns and costumes, the message.

  • I am among those in this list who was there way back then. Sly's first two albums were the first LPs i bought with my own money. I bought every album the day it came out, and saw the band at Northwestern University about 1972. By then he was showing up really late and sparking riots but he was still the greatest.

  • This song made Sly & The Family Stone rock royalty...

  • Larry Graham, almost single-handedly, started the funk bass...Bootsy even says so. But hey, how did you get this mix?

  • Larry Graham on Bass - one hairy mo'fo!!

  • this song reeks of drugs. i love it..

  • my favorite of all time

  • 1:21 "You ain't no boss...." lol

  • What's the song in the video after family affair?

  • That's Luv N' Haight. It's from the same album, There's a Riot Going On.

  • "arty fact" Nice way to put it. Love this record.

    PEACE

  • truly and emphatically THE most stoned out record i've ever heard. Every track is a winner! Can't be reproduced! a timeless arty fact!

  • Sly Stone was just too damn cool. LOL God...he was pretty sexy. LOL

  • what is this crap? it interrupts the song like a minute in! I want the whole song, like the title implies.

    One whore diamond for you!

  • swoons.. love this man..

  • I allways loved this song...thanks

  • Sly had his problems, but he was fabulous. Boy I miss the 70's.

  • Tres magnifique, Sly!

  • what song does it transition to @ 1:28???

  • I think it's Love N' Haight.

  • amanda wants to MB to this

  • all i can say is this is a great song...

  • times are getting tough. believe in god; trust in love.

  • Dresser1474

We all have family affairs in our families. so many black sheep in the world that I want to weep.they bring so much to the table and their thinking is so deep. COME TOGETHER/RIGHT NOW/OVER ME. Dresser1474

  • Man that was a Total Fuckn Piss Off at 1:06 when they switched from the song to that Fuk'n Bull Shit Rap!!!~!~!!

  • please excuse my outburst =)

  • he definitely got me smilin again.

  • Thanks for posting this. What a great piece of film! Where did you get it from? They look great here, and There's A Riot Going On is a masterpiece, one of those albums that I, personally, never get tired of listening to. Shame that drummer Gregg Errico had left by this time. I bet he must have been kicking himself after they released this album!

  • After the bizarriness that took place during the making of that album....he needed to leave and get himself together. He helped play on an Santana album with Buddy Miles. and he briefly joined the group Weather Report so it unfortunate that he left but the album remains a work of art for its time.

  • It was unfortunate for sure...I really liked Gregg Errico...(I find it hard to imagine him in Weather Report, tho')...well, I liked all of them...it's noticeable 'cause he's missing from the album inner sleeve pictures, and also 'cause there's a very early and innovative use of a drumachine on There's A Riot Going On...not a great work of art "of its time", (I have to disagree with you there, but only slightly) but of all time!

  • Yeah I'ld go for that..OF ALL TIME.

  • doug I gotcha ..

  • James Brown was too black for white people.Jimi Hendrix was too white for black folk.Sly was the first to bridge the gap and create crossover and funk at the same time.

    He has no peer.

    DC

  • "speak for your self doug" its whos got the good's ..dance I know you love it JB JH ..or ss what about mose A or benny G there an't no color in talent

  • right on right on

  • Right On Right ON :-)

  • Wow! What a strange life Sly had! He was on the run freom the law for bout 20 fukn years! Whats he doin these days???

  • i wish we could still here music this good on the radio today

  • This man is truly a genius, I had no idea until recently he produced songs for a number of rock groups at the time. I hope he has kicked his drug habit for good, then maybe he will go back into the studio to grace us with more of his genius.

  • I have been a Prince fan since " I want to be your lover" but it is obvious he was influenced by Sly in sound and look.

  • Does anyone know the name of the last song.? I think it say,'you got me smilin', ? If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks

  • this song is:(You Caught Me) Smilin, from album: There's a Riot Goin' On...it's one of my favorite album.

  • Thanks, ilovedokyyung

  • Great clip collection, but good lawd, me and my song was bent over in stitches with the, ' you ain't the boss' and the wacked out wink that he gave...In all honesty I Love Sly,though. It's a Family Affair...

  • What an amazing album, pity it as the pinnacle and eventual decline of Sly and the Family Stone.

  • sickkk but a good song!

  • Man pete rock is a genius....Amazing how he sampled this song for Dogs of War for Ghostface

  • pete rock is good, but sly's the real genius.

  • here is another one thats good

  • Such good music came out of the 60s and 70s. I took it for granted back then. Great song, its hard and starkly beautiful.

  • in fact listen to precious by the jam and you will see the influence love it :)

  • as a paul weller fan i see the influence love it :D

  • as a paul weller fan i can see how this truely influenced him love it :D

  • well done

  • luv this song. every time they play it on the radio my dads turns it up loud. luv sly and the family stone

  • wow, where do you live? the only sly song they play in houston is everyday people...and thats even rare to hear.

  • omg

    look at larry graham

  • I grew up listening to this stuff...so thankful I got to see them all perfom in Vegas a little over a year ago, poor sly was in a neck brace, but still rocked the house! This is GREAT SOULFUL MUSIC, thanks you for letting me be myself sly...AGAIN!!

  • Sly was the best!

Haters? Go to hell! Or join the brotherhood of man. It's your choice.

  • Cool funky sound, I never get tired of hearing this song. I own the record album and still play and dance to it.

  • This guy ruined his career with the drugs. It's such a great song, but you can tell his voice was deteriorating.

Sly and the Family Stone were one of the few great bands with black and white musicians of both genders.

  • My dad told me the exact same thing it's eerie that you both said the exact same words about him ruining his career.

  • GOD..so many bullshit comments on this song. unreal... why no one has posted that this song is probably one of the greatest songs of the 20th century? AND no exageration...

  • 100,000th view!

  • Nobody gives a shit about anyone's half-baked fishing stories about "what's gonna happen in 2012."

If you want to hear some empty, meaningless bullshit predictions about the future, wait for 10 minutes and I'll pack my bong and get back to y'all... I can guess with the best of 'em, if anyone gives a shit.

  • come on dude dont be a dick open up your heart

  • Madonna once sample " A Family Affair" in 1990 during the Blond Ambition Tour in her song "Keep It Together". I think it was so unique.

  • when my dad was a kid he was friends with the main guy's brother!!!

  • Hi. Can anybody tell me what should I do to get that bass sound? It's amazing...!!! He's playing whit a Pick? Is a Fender Jazz? Is Larry Graham mutting his strings? SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!

  • he is plucking and slapping

  • the most beautiful artist ever.

he almost changed changed the world.

    but the world killed him.

  • Busting out trivia,,,billboard #1 hit 120471, last of three for Sly. Greatest Hits a must have, 12 solid tunes.

  • people get ready

    2012

  • don't you feel like a tard sometimes bro

  • u got a problem kiddo..?

  • what's happening in 2012

  • ..its a family affair

  • absolutely nothing, so don't worry about bullshit aztec/mayan/whatever prophecies. no such thing as prophecies.

  • I explain what's suppossed to happen in 2012 on my channel. "GhostfaceVlogging part 2"

  • woop <3

  • My name is Angie DiMauro - Justice is served - U-haul

  • this song is real... listen to the lyrics

  • shutup

  • In an interview I heard Larry Graham say that Sly (using a pick) played Bass on "Family Affair" and that he (Graham) didn't even know about the song until he heard the record. He also said he felt Sly was using the song to tell the rest of the band something.

  • I love Sly so much. I saw him in concert. Portland, OR in about 1973

  • lol i didnt think people ur age used youtube :P

  • can anyone post the footage of sly playing this at the piano that used to be up?

  • dork

  • Thanks for the history lesson... I had NO idea this song was by them... and my parents (my dad esp) LOVE funk

  • Your dad is cool.

  • "Blood's thicher than the mud" what the hell does that mean?

  • your tie to your family is ultimately stronger than any obstacles or problems you may face. you essentially love your family unconditionally. that's my take, anyway.

  • Yeah, I understood that but why mud? Blood is Not thicker than mud. He could have said blood thicker than water, maybe that doesn't sound as good, I guess. Sly still rocked back in the day though.

  • mud being the problems you experience with your family. it's not supposed to literally mean blood is thicker than mud.

  • Yeah, that's it. Blood being the dirt going on in the family. You got it, "robotscantadib." I didn't take it literally I just wanted someone to dig in the inerior for a better meaning than what I had.

  • i guess it means that blood ties (family, parents, brother etc) are very strong (the mud is really tick but blood is even thicker)

  • It means this is one of the greatest songs ever.

Don't try to figure it out.

    Just enjoy.

    That's what I do. And I'm...

    Big Daddy

  • The sound on this is really good. It sounds live.

  • He sounds like he just woke up from a 3-day nap.

    I love the video, however.

  • lol

  • The song is "Luv N' Haight". 'Tis the first track from "There's a Riot Goin' On", the most classic of classics, the darkest funk EVER, for which this is a promotional clip. It's so cool that I almost don't believe that the record company put this out there.

  • I think my favorite.I had a mad crush on sly.

  • whats the song that starts 1:31 in???

  • Just heard Sly and the band are coming to London on July 21st. Bought a ticket pronto. Just hope he shows. It'll be a once in a lifetime chance. He can do a set of Kylie covers, I don't mind, just wanna see the legend before he shuffles off..

  • he's to be here in Calif July 7th.Preying he'll show here.

  • I just saw Sly perform last night in San Jose. He is nothing like this video, I'm not happy to report. He was slot, hunchbacked, lacking confidence, and probably paranoid. On the other hand, his voice was in excellent shape. He sang 2.5 songs and walked off the stage! Oh well, that's better than the 2 minutes he did at the 2006 Grammys.

  • OMG!!!! Yesterday in Ghent. He arrived 1 hour too late. He makes me think about the pope. A litte guy, with giant sunglasses and a giant hat. He was dressed in rapperoutfit. He introduced his band, sang like 4 minutes and dissapeared. Great band, but Sly is just too old...

  • Unfortunately I couldnt be @blue note festival...but reading your comment makes me feel a little bit better now ;) 4 minutes, omg!!

  • 4 minutes? Shit, forget it, I love Sly but he's a big joke now. His brain is too damaged.

  • I song moves my soul

  • I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • feels so good inside myself dont wanna move!

  • great song from a great band ! thanks

  • I DIG this song

  • Janet Jackson made a sample of this song under the title "On and On" the B side of "anytime anyplace" (1994)

  • "Stand" and "There's a Riot Goin On" are two of the greatest albulms of there era, and the polar opposite of each other, the first the ultimate hopeful hippi pop albulm, and the latter the bleakest, must drugged out and possibly greatest funk albulm ever made. This guy was a genious and is the saddest burnout in rock, soul history. Here's hoping to a one in a billion comeback, (that goofy mohawk appearance not included)

  • I love the Afros!

  • I would love to hear the whole tune...Does anybody have it?

  • when i was young my father loves this song and i love this song too..family affair

  • Sly is one of the most creative and innovation artist ever. Seriously underated for his musical contributions. Sly along with Little Richard, James Brown, and P-Funk changed music forever. Love ya Sly!

  • This is what I grew up with- I think they must be from The Bay Area?

  • Yeah, San Francisco

  • this song is nice, i really like it

  • Man thsi is the time for peace signs, and afros. Corn rolls,BBQ,40oz Beer.FUNK

  • Sly is such a cool cat.

  • this video clip was the last hurrah for the original band and sly

  • Actually orinal bassist, Larry Graham and drummer Greg Ericko had already split the band by this time.Larry is in the clip, but this is from the "Riot" period, larry has no credits on that album.

  • cool

  • nice...:O)

  • That cat was the coolest
