Thanks lakeshow499. I boxed for quite awhile but became a big fan of MMA before I got out of the USMC. I am glad to say that now in the USMC has adopted a self defense/unarmed assault system that draws from MMA. Years ago it was too heavily stilted towards strikes. The fact is that Boxing is just an art but MMA is the SCIENCE of how to wreck someones day. And as you know all those submissions and chokes could be LETHAL or instantly crippling in a real life combat situation.

@OZIASALLAH As a fan of both sports I see it differently. It could cause an influx of boxers into MMA which in turn will force MMA fighters to improve their hands. Look at how MMA has evolved in just the last 10 years. It started with BJJ dominance, then wrestlers, and now it seems karate (GSP, A Silva, Machida, etc) is emerging. You have to be well rounded in MMA these days, and I wouldn't mind seeing the hand striking improve in MMA though there is some great individual boxers in MMA.
@OZIASALLAH I would have to agree. When you start attacking joints and executing choke holds (things that could be lethal or crippling in a matter of seconds) rules are ultra important. In MMA if the rules weren't applied judiciously the sport would be banned. On another point I consider MMA fight officials to be better as a whole than boxing officials. Too many boxers have been killed, gone loopy or had their careers screwed because of crappy Referees and ignorant judges.

I am glad to say that now in the USMC has adopted a self defense/unarmed assault system that draws from MMA. Years ago it was too heavily stilted towards strikes. The fact is that Boxing is just an art but MMA is the SCIENCE of how to wreck someones day. And as you know all those submissions and chokes could be LETHAL or instantly crippling in a real life combat situation.

What I am saying, is that real fighting is not just boxing, MMA is as real as it gets, thus making it the dominant and alpha sport. James Toney is not a Real Fighter, he is a boxer. The MMA community is sick of hearing his mouth, when we know he will get taken to the ground and destroyed. Shoulder rolling and bobbing and weaveing only goes so far in the Octagon.

@OZIASALLAH As a fan of both sports I see it differently. It could cause an influx of boxers into MMA which in turn will force MMA fighters to improve their hands. Look at how MMA has evolved in just the last 10 years. It started with BJJ dominance, then wrestlers, and now it seems karate (GSP, A Silva, Machida, etc) is emerging. You have to be well rounded in MMA these days, and I wouldn't mind seeing the hand striking improve in MMA though there is some great individual boxers in MMA.

@OZIASALLAH I would have to agree. When you start attacking joints and executing choke holds (things that could be lethal or crippling in a matter of seconds) rules are ultra important. In MMA if the rules weren't applied judiciously the sport would be banned. On another point I consider MMA fight officials to be better as a whole than boxing officials. Too many boxers have been killed, gone loopy or had their careers screwed because of crappy Referees and ignorant judges.

Hell, in boxing you cant even throw a kick or elbow, much less take someone down. Real fights are fought when their are no rules. But, as a sport, MMA is the most diverse. However, in reality having an MMA fight is taking it really, really old school. MMA is pretty much the same thing as the ancient Greek Pankration games. In Greek mythology it said that Heracles and Theseus invented pankration as a result of using both wrestling and boxing with opponents. MMA hasnt been "as real as it gets" since the 1990's , and boxing hasnt been real since the days of the greeks, with guys like "Don king" fixing fights. (Although there has been a few boxers who were legit). Everything is about money now, no integrity. Its hard to swallow

@OZIASALLAH MMA as a whole can be seen as a discipline, most of them have wrestling background, that might be their strongest discipline depending on the fighter, boxers are very good at what they do but it's 1 dimensional, once the leg kicks and the wrestling and the submission and the choking takes place, they don't know what to do, they are lost, this is what this fight is going to prove, boxing isn't everything, boxing is only boxing, there are many ways to win a fight other than punching.

You can’t compare Boxing with MMA. Boxing is one dimensional, MMA involves many fighting styles. Look at it this way: You can’t say a world class sprinter should play soccer just because he can run fast down the field. There is more to soccer then running down the field. Yes, it’s part of it and would help. But there is a lot more to soccer then sprinting. By the way, I don’t like soccer.
