I can recall from my own country. When we were Socialistic in 1970s, I made only 500 bucks but school was free. Now I make 20,000 bucks but school costs 30,000 bucks :P

I lived 12 years in Cuba(Vedado,Havana). And like in soviet Russia there are equals and "more equals". People spend 360 days complaining about life and maybe five being proud. Lets hope things change, there are a lot of smart people there.
Socialism fails miserably! It has failed so many times in history! If Cuba IS starting ALLOW a market system I hope it is going to be a succes. But I fear it will not because you have to know how it works and embrace it. Cubans should be allowed to read Adam Smith, John Locke etc. and start to embrace what private property is and demand property rights and individual rights (not collective rights).
Cubans in particular the blacks are not allowed at the Nacional hotel in Havana. No blacks work at the Nacional which is a time capsule of 1950's Cuba for European and Canadian tourists.
I hope those reforms would end like NEP politics in SSCB, not like Perestroyka. I understand embargo and all other pressures on Cuba, but those kind of reforms which based on private profit and free marketing, can damage socialism's ideology which based on equality, justice and common ownership of means of production.

Fidel is not a dictator. Dictators don't teach the poor literacy. Dictators don't arm the people from the threat of invasion. Dictators don't provide free medical care. Dictators don't ration the food products among the people. Dictators don't cut off diplomatic ties with Israel over the mistreatment of Palestinians. Dictators don't organize teams of doctors to go and provide free medical care to the poor in third world countries. If Castro is a dictator then he is the strangest one there is.

The Revolution happened because people on the island as well as the rest of latin America were sick of what American corporations were doing to their countries. People, the conclusion is that you have to live in the place for at least a month as a regular cuban citizen to understand whats going on, stop believing this person or that person, or this book or that book, or this program or that program, its getting you nowhere. I've visited my family in Cuba 3 times going on my fourth and by the first week it already unbareable.
I have always wanted to go to Cuba. Maybe someday. I think Cuba will once again be a great place to travel to for Americans. I only hope Cubans want us there. What are the restriction on owning businesses there? I have seen many things I would love to import from Cuba too. Oh I hope some day.

The last time I was in Cuba I asked all kinds of subversive questions, there were no cops chasing me. We have 661k doctors for a nation of 300million, We have 50 million people without health insurance, many who will die as a result. Correction-1)Cubans do go to their hotels, 2)Many Cubans have visited the USA when a relative asks the embassy to allow them to visit them. i have met these people in the USA and that's how i know. Cubans are astounded at how people are gouged in hospitals for money when in Cuba, health care is free. Nothing is perfect. The USA is fast becoming a nation or a few rich and many poor. after reading some comments, there are many misconceptions about Cuba and the USA. First of all , Cubans cannot leave freely but if someone outside the country asks the embassy to visit them anywhere in the world, the Cuban has to show that they are planning to come back and they can leave. i know this for a FACT. Cubans make friends with visitors, sometimes marry them and they can leave freely and go back and forth. i know this for a fact. Some Cubans want to leave Cuba and some don't.
there are two economies in cuba, the peso and the convertible or CUC which is used mostly in the tourist industry. Those in the tourist industry are doing quite well, those using pesos are not so fortunate. you can live well and be happy without a bunch of material things. Look at citizens of the usa, they have a lot of material things but tons of stress. For many Americans , they're just a paycheck away from bankruptcy or homelessness. Cuba has better health care, education. and less homeless.

As far as the national debt amigo, I TOTALLY agree, the US needs 2 clean house & stop printing $ we don't have! Another reason why the embargo is so destructive to Cuba is because there are no other genuinely socialist nations out there (not yet anyways). Cubans can have computers, but they can't have internet access, and if they do, it can only be at hotels, at an outrageous price per hour, that is almost equivalent to what a Cuban makes in a month. Even them, it is monitored, because they are Cubans. So a Cuban can now choose, whether they want to try to find food, with the money, that is already invisible to began with, so they can maybe eat for part of the month, or they can go party on the internet for an hour.
This is an absolute mockery from the Cuban communist government towards its people. More of the same time of oppression Cubans have been suffering for the last 50 years, with a little bit of a twist.
What right should any country or government have over it's people, regarding the right of free enterprise. Going to a hotel, renting a car, or having a home of their own. Or furthermore, controlling access to communication equipment, like cell phones, computers. This is wicked humor at it's best.
A person was allow only to buy 2 or 3 pairs of shoes yearly and god forbit they would brake. Children couldn't drink milk after the age of 7 yrs old. It is notable the amount of houses and buildings all over the country that needs repairing, not only in Havana. Apparently some people believe is not Fidel's fault. I saw it with my own eyes. In the name of his communist regiment he stole ever property my family owned. What a great leader!

There is no starvation in Cuba. I never heard of the Cuban governemnt asking for food relief from international charity origanisations like the red cross. Cuba is not in ruins there are only some ruins especially in the neighborhood of old Havana. There are volunteer brigades going around building homes. So yes the Castro Bros. didn't have anything to do with it. It was the US imposed embargo that caused the problem's you"re taking about. Im curious, what was your profession or job(s) in Cuba?

Cuba and North Korea are two completely different countries. I agree Cuba isn't the best country. But to compare it to North Korea is just a horrible thing to do. Almost all countries allow travel to Cuba, the US doesn't though. If I lived in another country I could go to school in Cuba for a very low price and sometimes even free. We have 661k doctors for a nation of 300million, We have 50 million people without health insurance, many who will die as a result. It costs 200k+ to become a doctor in the USA, DO YOU THINK THESE DOCTORS PRACTICE IN POOR RURAL AREAS where they'll make no money????Most bankruptcies are due to people's heath care bills, add joblessness , outsourcing of jobs and you can see why they advertise pills for depression constantly on tv. Correction-1)Cubans do go to their hotels, 2)Many Cubans have visited the USA when a relative asks the embassy to allow them to visit them. i have met these people in the USA and that's how i know. Cubans are astounded at how people are gouged in hospitals for money when in Cuba, health care is free. Nothing is perfect. The USA is fast becoming a nation or a few rich and many poor. Before you cast judgement on Cuba, try and fix your own country or we'll soon be wishing we lived in Cuba.

after reading some comments, there are many misconceptions about Cuba and the USA. First of all , Cubans cannot leave freely but if someone outside the country asks the embassy to visit them anywhere in the world, the Cuban has to show that they are planning to come back and they can leave. i know this for a FACT. Cubans make friends with visitors, sometimes marry them and they can leave freely and go back and forth. i know this for a fact. Some Cubans want to leave Cuba and some don't.

there are two economies in cuba, the peso and the convertible or CUC which is used mostly in the tourist industry. Those in the tourist industry are doing quite well, those using pesos are not so fortunate. you can live well and be happy without a bunch of material things. Look at citizens of the usa, they have a lot of material things but tons of stress. For many Americans , they're just a paycheck away from bankruptcy or homelessness. Cuba has better health care, education. and less homeless.

health care where? in what part? in the town that i visited i know the town nurse and even she said the only thing she has available to give ill people are herbs and shit like that . where are you getting your information from? my aunt is visiting the us in the U.S. and had to get an operation. thank god she was here when she got ill. In Cuba she would have had to travel to god knows where for that operation she might have died over there and the operation was free.

IMFG I don't do it like the "Americans want" me to. Sorry 2 dissapoint but I'm much 2 self aware 2 do anything anybody wants. I will NEVER forget where I came from & will always be proud of my culture. You make me laugh "go down there & change it" as if that were so easy. Again, I won't take advice from someone who's never lived in Cuba, the hold the govt has is unimaginable. I did stand up & I paid for it, had 2 leave for my kids & don't regret it. From day one in our schools we were fed Che the hero, even had to sing his song wearing our little pioneer clothes. In case you aren't aware, it's acceptable to love the country you're from, embrace your culture, hold true to what made you but still appreciate & love the country that takes you in & gives you new hope. While I have never thought the US was perfect I appreciate the good it does offer and the people that are Americans. In this country I am VERY vocal about things I don't agree with & vote in EVERY election because I can & I cherish my freedom never forgetting those that don't have that!

IMFG I don't know wher you lived but it's sad that now that you have freedom you wish you had communism. There's always a long period of adjustment when people who weren't able to achive & make their way are all of a sudden supposed to. The day that Cuba is free again, it 2 will go through a difficult time where I'm sure many will remember when they didn't have 2 work so hard 2 get so little. The answer is very simple, because of the "old Cuban dinosaurs" in Miami that have pushed for an embargo that's strengthened Castro & done nothing 2 eliminate him. Castro loves to use the blockade as he lcalls it 2 blame everything that's wrong with the economic mess hes made of Cuba. I & many Cubans are against it as the old breed of Cubans are fading away the backing of the embargo is fading as well. Sad how the old war of Batista & Castro led to that, many of us don't belong to that war.

I disagree w/ many things done by the US, in fact my dream & the dream of many Cubans is of a Cuba libre that's not dominated by the US. As far as the national debt amigo, I TOTALLY agree, the US needs 2 clean house & stop printing $ we don't have! @anaelena65 I believe the things I write because they are real. It's not just about bringing socialism to the US (I never said "paradise" by the way) it's about accomplishing world socialism. Another reason why the embargo is so destructive to Cuba is because there are no other genuinely socialist nations out there (not yet anyways). Thats why Cuba's politics are geared towards the internationalism. We are "stuck" where we are because of capitalism.

Cubans can have computers, but they can't have internet access, and if they do, it can only be at hotels, at an outrageous price per hour, that is almost equivalent to what a Cuban makes in a month. Even them, it is monitored, because they are Cubans. So a Cuban can now choose, whether they want to try to find food, with the money, that is already invisible to began with, so they can maybe eat for part of the month, or they can go party on the internet for an hour.

What right should any country or government have over it's people, regarding the right of free enterprise. Going to a hotel, renting a car, or having a home of their own. Or furthermore, controlling access to communication equipment, like cell phones, computers. This is wicked humor at it's best.

A person was allow only to buy 2 or 3 pairs of shoes yearly and god forbit they would brake. Children couldn't drink milk after the age of 7 yrs old. It is notable the amount of houses and buildings all over the country that needs repairing, not only in Havana. Apparently some people believe is not Fidel's fault. I saw it with my own eyes. In the name of his communist regiment he stole ever property my family owned. What a great leader!

It's kinds hard to have the freedom to do what we want if your hungry, homeless and in debt. That is why in Cuba you have things like rationed food and free education and free healthcare. There is no starvation in Cuba. I never heard of the Cuban governemnt asking for food relief from international charity origanisations like the red cross. Cuba is not in ruins there are only some ruins especially in the neighborhood of old Havana. There are volunteer brigades going around building homes. So yes the Castro Bros. didn't have anything to do with it. It was the US imposed embargo that caused the problem's you"re taking about. Im curious, what was your profession or job(s) in Cuba?

Almost all countries allow travel to Cuba, the US doesn't though. If I lived in another country I could go to school in Cuba for a very low price and sometimes even free.
