They sat on patents for decades that would have brought NASA into the next generation of space exploration but the companies involved were making more off the Shuttle program. One very prominent astronaut said to me the shuttle program was built around the shuttle not built around the mission.

It costs the taxpayers 51 million dollars to send 1 astronaut to and from the space station. In a mere couple years Sir Branson dropped the price to $200.000. Do the math!
