I gotta say, since I was about 5 years old, I've always been a HUGE fan of Joan Rivers as a comedienne... I don't understand why she credits her sister as being the pretty one. She was a bombshell in my opinion back in the 50s! In the 50s, she was comparable to today's Kristen Bell.
My take on Dawn is nada. WHY ? I never heard of her. Her weight is not a problem for me but her laugh annoys the hell outta me- I feel she is adorable after this interview as she seems to adore Joan as i do
so she got her comedy from her father coming home from work and making fun of people's illness and misery... sounds about right. i really love her. oh another thing though, and this one's kinda serious: you insist on liking to call her "joan" when she's old enough to be your mother then i guess i like to call you "chins." that's what i really had to say pausing this at 1:18, now i'll watch the rest
@ibclappin - What a mean spirited person you are. Dawn began the interview by politely asking if she could call Joan by her first name. She started to say "I'd like to call you Your Majesty..." The respect is there and it's evident throughout the interview. I love Dawn's laugh - it's so infectious. Joan is obviously an idol of hers, and you're complaining about Dawn's "chins"? So shallow, so depressing.
@ibclappin Didn't you already respond to my post , like...months ago? I've been wondering why you posted again and the only thing I can think of is that you deleted your old post and replaced it with this new one liner of devastation. Shouldn't have bothered, should you?
@aerialkate i do get out from time to time. for example the other day i went out on a date; she only has one chin which is a plus, on the down side though she likes to store two-by-fours inside her rectum and that's kind of a turn-off for me personally. but altogether i try to look at the bright side of things in life
When I saw her documentary, I wasn’t expecting to be affected as strongly as I was. It was really very touching, she has had some hard times in her life, and still manages to show up everyday and give it her all. I really respect her for that.
It's so nice to see Joan being serious and not having to make jokes constantly. I think she's hilarious when she does but it's touching to see a glimpse of how sensitive and caring she is. She seems like such a genuinely good-hearted person.
It makes me sad, and also inspires me, to see how tortured Joan is. Seems like she's been really affected by her experience as a child, being outcast - and its carried over in her whole life to this day. Its always really tragic when someone great cannot see their true greatness, but it should be an inspiration to all for self love, confidence, and always striving to de-condition from the all too often traumatic childhood, and the complexes that our parents so kindly leave us with.

They should have kept this crap in the states .If she wasnt Jewish I doublt she would have even got on the stage let alone TV. About as funny as drying paint.
two of the funniest woman around. dawn french in french and saunders or the vicar of dibley, and joan rivers on how'd you get so rich or her stand up or her jewelry. so funny. these bitches rule comedy.
"You would never see an overweight woman like this on American television"
Well, that's just sad for America isn't it. Dawn French is a lovely and funny woman, who cares if she's fat? She makes fun of herself for it anyway.
It is also ironic considering the average UK BMI is 26 and the average US BMI is 27.9, if anything there should be MORE overweight woman on American TV...equality and all...
@BananaSandwich1 That's not necessarily true. The longest life expectancy in the US are in Minnesota, Iowa. These are states where women have some meat on their bones. I think happiness, sense of purpose, positive attitude, close knit relationships, etc. have more to do with "healthy" life. My grandmothers lived to 90 and all were never thin.
perhaps because your comment was insulting towards the person to begin with. saying someone looks like a drag queen and then commenting on her weight might get some return fire. perhaps you should think about that in the future
That would be Dawn French! She's a friggin LEGEND here in the UK so shut up! so what she has a weight problem. She's our Rosie O' Donnell except better, although, O' Donnell is pretty fucking hilarious!
"So round, so firm, so fully packed!" I think this line is from a Bugs Bunny cartoon about Christopher Columbus, when he is trying to convince the King of Spain that the world is round instead of flat. Maybe he (Benjamin Freid) was trying to match Your comic wit, Joan! Anyway, You've already shown the world how marvelous You are. He can suck on that!

This is a really good interview. Dawn has a gift for relaxing her guests and letting them reveal themselves. Joan is surprisingly shy. Sweet.
