I would definetely not recommend anyone bottle feeding bear cubs with the intent on returning them to the wild. The bears you see in this clip are born in captivity here and will remain here throughout their lives. One of the main reasons we bottle raise the cubs is to create a relationship and bond with the cubs so we can care for them properly throughout their lives. If released into the wild they unfortunately would become "problem" bears.
Is there a way that other people like myself can help by adopting a cub and hand raising them, then returning them back into wild when they grow up a bit?
This seems so sad for the baby bears to be taken from their mothers so young. How much knowledge would she be passing on otherwise? It seems heartbreaking for the mother bear to have her babies stolen from her too.
Thank you for your comments. The cubs are removed for the health and safety of the cubs. If the cubs were to remain with the mother the male bears in the area would try to eliminate them in an effort to force the mother back into a breeding cycle. In the wild the female (sow) will not go into a breeding cycle while she has the cubs with her, generally, up to 2 years. In the exhibit the cubs learn everything they would normally learn from their mother through our enrichment programs.
Thank you for comments. The mothers are still in hibernation at the time we begin bottle feeding them. We only remove the cubs from the mother for health and safety concerns.
Thank you for noticing the weights. That is exactly why we weigh the cubs immediatley before we begin bottle feeding them. Some cubs do emerge from the dens a little lighter than others. By weighing them we know what special needs they may have so we can care for their every need.
If I get reincarnated, I wanna come back as one of these. Seriously, how cool is it that you're born fully-equipped with claws? I'd be swiping kneecaps like crazy!

I'm not sure the mother bear is so thrilled to lose her cubs... This seems rather cruel...
