I was there , the final game ever at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. They played this as Dusty Baker dug up home plate and held it high to the sold out crowd. I froze many times watching The Giants play. I would go to The Stick for a 7 30 game, by the third inning the temprature would drop to maybe 50 degrees, the wind would howl, and the fog would get so thick that you couldnt see the outfied from home plate. I miss going to The Stick for baseball. Thoes games were the best days of my life
Its a Shame The Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field are gone. It was a real Rivalary then now adays its the Yankees or nothing Else. Speaking from two Generations of Giants Fans whom Refused to root for the mets. I was born a yankee Fan but Will always hold a special place in my heart for The Giants and Dodgers. The mets are just the Bastard Off Spring of the Giants and Dodgers
I'm a Mets fan, but Shea being gone doesn't upset me that much. It was never a great stadium and was really outdated by 2008. I was not yet born in 1958, but I get much more teary watching Ebbets Field demolished to that tune. In that case no new stadium was being built and major league baseball was never coming back to Brooklyn. What an outrage.
I'm a Phillies fan but Shea is indelibly etched in my youth as a fan...Dave Kingman smashing bus windows in the lots...Staub, Milner, Seaver, Koosman and all those guys. It will never be the same again. The Mets will be back I'm sure. Probably sooner than later. I recall Felix Millan being a hard baseball card to get. Go figure.
I'm a lifelong Yankees fan who always enjoyed going to the dump in Flushing. National League baseball in New York has always been for the working stiff. Inelegant yet wonderful places like Ebbets Field, The Polo Grounds and Big Shea. I miss all of them. You can keep your stadiums with their food courts, Sushi Bars and Hard Rock Cafes. They only detract from the greatest game in the world. I'll take those old cathedrals any day of the week.
At least some one understands as well. I am a Mets fan who never wanted Shea to go. And like you does not understand why people go to ball games to eat sushi, steak and fish. You go to a ball game to have a hot dog and beer or soda if you are a kid! It is crazy. And no one goes to a ball game to play wiffle ball, you can stay home and do that without paying like $70. It is terrible, but it is what has happened to the sport we have called baseball.
Here's the solution--start looking around on eBay and similar sites for old baseball cards of your favorite players. Many of them have background shots of the stadiums that bring back a flood of memories--like that great facade at Yankee stadium. Many of the old time photographers had a historical feel for what they were doing and now their noble work is available for a reasonable price. You will get a lot more than simply a picture of a ballplayer. Have fun looking. I'm going there right now
@prausch65 If I ever get the chance to own the Mets, (Haha) I will change everything to the things they used to be from when my father was a kid because he told me that is when the sport was nothing more then a game of fun and thrill. Now it is money and nothing else.
I just watched the last game at rosenblatt stadium in Omaha. Although not a major league park, it has a rediculously meaningful history for baseball, as it has been the home of the CWS for forever. another stadium to be leveled and to replaced by a stadium named after a corporation. makes me cry

@NedRacine Wow, for once I agree with a Yankees fan... ;)
I've loved the Mets my whole life, but I've lived my whole life in California, never been east of Arizona, let alone NYC and Shea...
But I'll get there someday.
New Yorkers, consider yourselves lucky. Giant fans or Dodger fans or Met or Yankee fans--they actually CARE about their team. Phillies fans, Cubs fans, Red Sox and Cards fans CARE.
"Dodger fans" here in So. Cal wouldn't know Russell Martin from Russell Crowe--METS!!
