I think that the cat fell, or thought that it could make the jump. My aunt is a vet, and every so often she gets in cats that have fallen out of two or three story windows. They're usually in pretty bad shape too. Just a few days ago, my cat tried to jump out of my second story window; I had to rush across the room and grab him.

Anyway, if you throw a cat outside of a window, he's just as likely to land on his feet if he jumped or fell. They're good at reacting quickly.
