Northern exposure did use a poor choice of words calling redsilver mentally challenged. The correct word is STUPID. I have heard many great singers sing live...I have never heard anyone with the vocal range, power, key, phrasing, volume and simple sound quality as Gary. He is in his sixties now and his voice has lost a little luster. But just check out his versions of Amazing Grace on here from the 90's. I have had the privledge of seeing Gary live about15 times. Simply incredible.
Gary's Valjean is my favorite by far. I think it's astounding. I always listen to the version with him singing, not the broadway or london recordings which i also own
Forget the sound quality. Morris can sing. I first heard him sing this on the Johnny Carson Show way back when. He came out w/his guitar, sat on a stool and just sang his heart out. I was in tears when he finished & evidently the tv audience was too. There was dead silence for seconds after he finished. I mean total silence. Then the place errupted. Carson said he'd never seen anything like it in all of his years. What a performance and what a singer!!!!
Amazing performance, the best part, or rather the part that takes my breath away is 2:18 ... the way he sings the words 'how soon' are phenomenal. Thank you so much for uploading.
Err.. I was driven here by a comment on another page (Colm Wilkinson singing the same song), saying how terrible Gary's version is. Now that I'm here, I wonder what the fuss is. He's not bad at all! These 'critics,' I dunno..
Many people don't like him as Valjean, but I definitely do like him. It takes time for you to actually like him, because his voice is different from your usual Valjeans (Colm, John Owen Jones, David Shannon...)
I have to admit that I hated him with a passion when I first heard the CSR, but after 3 months, I learned to love him.
i think it would sound better if the quality is better. that's why i didn't watch it all the way through, it was bugging me. Michael Burgess acutsic version is pretty good also.
@singsongfly Yes I must admit the "sound quality" SUCKS!!! It was a 'VHS recording re-recorded to digital-camera, then to 'YouTube. Once I invest in a quality soundcard, I willl re-submit video and the best I can do (at that point) will to be to upload best the video that I have. But you must admit; were it not for the upload that I submitted, you could not have heard/seen the artist/performance/recording? The materials only can be shared because I valued it at the time it was broadcast? FYI
Ive just played the part of Valjean in york id a loved every second of it!! It is such and amazing part to play!! I hope one day i could play it on the west end oh that would be an ultaimte dream! If you can would u mind watching me singing bring him home at my first rehearsal of this song comment and rate!! Gary is an extremley hard act to follow and this rehearsal clip is by far no my best performance of but its the only one i have, Christian x TYPE IN: Christian Lunn Bring Him Home
No one sings this song.....or others....like Gary!! He's known as a country singer and to hear him sing Jean Valjean's song is incredible!! This video was on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. And to top it off, he's always been great to look at :>)
Love it. I saw him as Valjean in 1991 when the 1st national tour of Les Mis came to Los Angeles. AMAZING performance. Still one of my favorite Valjeans of all time.
I also saw him in LA doing val jean. he will always be my most fav of all of them. Too bad he thought he had to kill himself. I think playing that part would of shown his range and talent even more.
Omg, my heart stopped when I read your comment--totally sounds like you said Gary has killed himself!!!
I'm assuming you meant to say that Gary should've played Javert (who kills himself) in Les Miserables, right? If not then, what are you talking about? LOL. :P
I was told that years ago but I wasnt able to find any info to confirm, I just thought it was correct because he kind of just dropped from the scene. But Just yesterday I saw he is alive and well. Thank God!!! Sorry to upset you.
Hmm, that's a really bizarre thing to assume. A simple Wikipedia search would've confirmed he's a live and well. I wouldn't go around saying things as serious as that without absolute confirmation of its validity, if I were you. Grrrr.
Anyway, you made me jump outta my skin there for a moment, but it's alright, I guess. LOL.
Sorry about that really. I had been thinking that he was dead for years, what a relief he isnt dead. Wikipedia didnt exist when I found out the news. And since he dropped out of the biz for what seemes like forever, I just assumed the info. was right. But thats where I went to find out more info. I am so glad hes still here among us.
I am a professional vocalist and guitarist, and I have always admired Gary Morris' great vocal talent, and I would classify him in an elite class all of his own. Any one who would not agree is surely mentally challenged, and totally void of musical pros. Great performance! Thanks sandman.
I'm certainly not mentally challenged and I am a professional , and Gary is certainly good , but not the best I heard in this . There are another couple of versions on youtube that I like better , so don't make statements like that . His vibrato on stronger higher notes oscillates too much from a tone almost to the neighboring semitone . How old is he ? Sometimes that happens in older ages . But overall good , at least he can hold those notes well .
Calling anyone mentally challenged was a poor choice of words on my part. my apologies to 87redsilver, and everyone. Yes he surely does have a strong,,,almost extreme vibrato, but that's his style. Still love it! Thanks.
i really love this guys voice...although I love all valjeans, gary morris has this great voice for Bring Him Home like no other...I wish he went back to Broadway and done it a few more times, it would have been great to see him
This is ridiculous. I'm giving my opinion respectfully and you insult me with no reason at all.
I'm talking about things that I know about (I'm a singer myself), so you should learn to respect other people's opinions. If you disagree with me, the way that normal people communicate is talking and discussing.
If you had a bad day and needed to insult someone with no excuse, I haven't done anything to you to deserve that. Probably Gary would tell you the same.
Reply to eruera52: I was a little taken back when I read your comment, and was seriously thinking about deleting it? Reply to eruera52: (and finally) Thanks for your comments and for tuning in to this little video/performance that more and more people have appreciated (possibly for the first-time) since posting.
Sandman, I must say you have the most remarkable way of soothing away the ugly idiocy that was posted here. What a guy!! I wish I had the patience. And thank you for the Gary Morris. Many appreciate that honest vibrato and his lovely voice. Keep up the good work. C.
mmmm...hey, oaiturriaga, I just spoke to Gary and asked why he "shook his head" at his top notes....and he said it was to get rid of all that shit that came out of your dumb fuckin arse!! Now thats "not good" .....put your "weird vibratto" on here fucker or fuck off. Dumb fuck.
mmm... he does it good, though his high notes sound like he's singing through his nose. He's vibratto is weird too... see how he shakes his head as he sings?? That's not good....
As in the complete symphonic recording, his voice sounds a little annoying and weak to me.
Well, that just gave me the shivers. I've heard a lot of men sing this song, but Gary Morris has the greatest emotional impact for me. Glad they chose him for the definitive recording.
Anyone who says Jamie Pugh's version is better does not know music. Pugh's story was compelling, but there's no way he is a better vocalist than Gary Morris.
wow. What a voice. Great post. While listening to this, i waited during the pause on that very last note " ... bring him ....." (and you know he's going to nail it!) "...home" Of couse he does. Thanks.
Thank you for this post. i remember him doing this simple guitar version on some talk show. He just pulled out his old accoustic and gave that audience the best performance of that song I've ever seen. I love this performance. The song works so well poetically simple.
Gary Morris has an undeniably haunting wide range and emotionally deep voice. I have seen him 2 times and I consider myself fortunate to have experienced such abundant talent first hand. Thank you so much for the post. His country music is awesome as well but anyone who has heard his take on Valjean can readily see he is a cut above the rest.
Wow! I've always considered Colm Wilkinson to be untouchable as Valjean, but I have to say, Gary definitely amazes me. I would like to have seen him perform on the stage. I think I'll have to buy his version of the music as well.
