what are the best years of old harleys to rebuild?  availablilty of parts, worthwhile to rebuild etc.

All are OK, but are underpowered... the Shovelhead was made during 55mph speed limits and gas crunch era, but still are good engines to rebuild, in fact rebuilt engines are usually much better than the factory one due to tighter tolerances on modern equipment. To answer your question, I like 1978 and up.

Im all for 1936 and up to 1984, I really feel like harley died at the end of that year.
