I'm interested in doing Americorps but I wanted to know the pros and cons. So I was searching online and came across a book called "I Wanted Sunshine But Ran Sideways" by Jenn Ruben...Like I read the book and damn, it's a MUST for those who want to do AmeriCorps VISTA! It's a 250 page book on the author's true story of being a volunteer in california

No AmeriCorps is definately not mandatory. It is more like the USA's national version of the Peace Corps. It's American's helping Americans and encouraging people to be more involved in their communities. I am serving currently and would encourage the program.

Instead of being paranoid, let's be positive and make a difference in the system. If there was a point where it became mandatory it would be time for some democracy in action! Until then, Americorps is an amazing way to help people, travel, and pay for college.
