I'm very happy to read that chkjns is enthusiastic about Rosza. The Double Indemnity score is not really like a number of his scores for films more hopeful in tone. But it is remarkable. I thin Quo Vadis is illustrative of a more symphonic element in his writing. But yet in Indemnity we nonetheless have a kind of troubled theme that stirs up our emotions about characters who are no good. Our empathy is being aroused in spite of ourselves.
Rozsa always seemed capable of stirring up deep emotion by separating sounds in his marvelous ability to orchestrate. You hear one theme simultaneously with a submerged theme--- they play against each other but somehow we hear both and follow them and feel somehow struck to our very inmost selves. Only a musical genius can do this.
@284Maldiner You've said it all so well ! ! ! I just added this to my 1944 playlist. My channel is a hall of fame for over a century of the best music on earth, over 12000 songs on 550 playlists. I've already playlisted over 350 artists, but looks like I need to start one for Rózsa now, too! Music like this changes the face of our culture - for the better, & those who leave indelible marks like this are my heroes! chuck
The opening bit is called "Dirge" which is a march of death or doom. It is supposed to signify the characters actions throughout the film as he is essentialy contructong his own end. Beautiful and powerful movie.
I don't think the film - now considered a masterpiece - would be even worth watching if it did not include the music. Its hard to compose good music, good job Rózsa.
A great suite for a great movie.

the first two minutes with the heavy slow rhythm remind me massively of the slave galley scene in Ben Hur.
