  • The guy is talented, but he sure does fry those low notes.

  • this is recorded that is jd sumner singing they are lip singing

  • Check out the Russian Basso Profondo`s

    they top this so easy.

  • this is the tune to the there's a rainbow of love.

  • who else saw that singer get puller back by his collar at 2:30?

  • Comment removed

  • Best bass singer in my opion, was Melvin Franklin

  • these were professors at the University of Mobile...I was a student there, singing in the choir. It was meant to be funny! We all knew they were lip syncing. It was just a fun night of performances and laughter. Everyone can relax now. haha.

  • That is JD's voice and NOT this singer.

  • they are lip syncing to the stamps

  • @WLgrad05 I know! What fakes! I've watched this many times thinking he sounded really close to JD Sumner and then I went and listened to the Stamps' version of this song and it's the exact same!

  • @vipor3D I think that's the "show"/joke.

  • whats the name of this guy?

  • He sounds like a whale...

  • wow......

  • i lvoe to get low as i can but now i dont worry of it because cant change it anyway lol

  • Tim Riley is my favorite bass singer, he has the most power and sings the lowest...well, maybe there are a couple lower, but not as powerful as he sings.

  • it's harold gilley. srsly guys. harold gilley

  • Okay...one more folks. I commented about 2 years ago about a recording where later in the song the bass (JD Sumner) supposedly sings a nasty falsetto on the words "There's a Christmas Carol of love"....then drops back down after that. The deacons dressed in Santa suits would lip-synch to it yearly. One year some kids did it. Well, here's the recording of the falsetto part where it's even a different recording of JD. @ 5:05 on this recording here:

  • I can sing twice as low and twice as loud,Last time i preformed at my college i did'nt need a mic.

  • @fuitbag

I doubt that since Twice as low would be at least an octave under the piano and that can't be heard without a mic i don't care who you are, no one can put enough volume to note that low and be heard without a mic. Look up what the human ear can hear and I am sure you will agree.

  • @thebassmanadam it is an octave under the piano and i can be heard without a mic, look up basso profondo and you'll see we can be heard without a mic.

  • @fuitbag Anyone watching this video knows what a profundo is . If you really performed at your college like you said and in the range you claimed I'm sure they got it on video. I'll guarantee it. Post it somewhere or get lost. This isn't a forum for making that kind of wild claim.

  • @ChangsUncle ok i'll get them to post it on here then, but usaully they upload all our videos to facebook ;P

  • I've heard way lower, listen to Russian Basso Profondo's then you'll know what low is.BTW i am a Basso Profondo.

  • I'm extremely disappointed with the comments here. This is a wonderful performance in it's own right and doesn't deserve this critique. I loved it and don't have any desire to compare with any other group or singers!!

  • wow very nice but ole JD sumner goes lower baby

  • what the name of this song?

  • Ha Ha, beat that.

  • TIM DUNCAN IS THE BEST

  • Yeah that's kinda down there... last E on the piano.

  • An old man from western Kentucky they all called Frog matched up with JD to see who could get lower and Frog took it far off the piano keys and beat JD

  • what's the name of the song?

  • until 2:56 I could sing the solo but here it's impossible!

  • I did the bass part for this at our church when we did this act. except we had a lil kid dressed up as a hobo that kept interrupting the program earlier to ask if he culd sing but we wouldn't let him. then when we started "singing" he walked out on stage and started JD's part. it was great!!

  • i've watched this video a lot of times now, but i still enjoy it each time... great bass singer, and great video :)

  • Ich teste gerade das Modul "Moderator", habe das Video hier auch dort zugefügt, wer sich dafür interessiert kann ja mal vorbeischauen und prüfen, ob das Modul für ihn auch geeignet ist.

I make a test with the moderator modul at my channel.

If you are interestet make a visit and check it out,

Maybe you will use this modul too

I added this video there too, if you like it, you can vote for it at my channel.

You are wellcome to add some of your own videos.

  • How do you get vocal fry to go down lower? I can only vocal fry like 3 whole steps below my low note which is tenor low Ab. Do you have to be born with that kind of stuff or does it develop with age, or can you learn to do it?

  • I have stated before that this is not JD. Its Harold Gilley. JD had a unique sound to his voice in the low register and that lacks here. Further more, after extensive searching I have found no recording of this song made by JD and I looked through his entire album/song list from throughout his career.

  • @thebassmanadam If this is Gilley, or JD for that matter, I don't care, then where did you find Gilley's record??? I would love to get a copy of it!!!

  • @theiliad2000x

I am guessing with confidence that this is Gilley based off his JD impersonations! The tone is slightly different as well. I suppose without hearing the actual track I can't say for sure who is doing it and I have no idea where the recording exists as I have searched far and wide for it and have not found it. If you ever find it let me know!

  • @thebassmanadam

Well gosh darn it, someone has to have this darn record b/c this isn't the only video with people faking...

  • @theiliad2000x

I feel your frustration and I agree. A record of this has gotta be out there somewhere I just have no clue of what else I can do too find it. I have all 5 recordings of JD doing the original Rainbow Of Love but this song alludes me.

  • Look up Russian Basso Profondo...

  • this makes me sound like a tenor

  • @24gta4

This make me sound like a 3 yr old super soprano.

  • George Younce was actually a much better quality bass, and this guy's not too bad either!

  • Absolutely incredible! Makes your bones vibrate.

  • I watched both, and matched up the video with the backgroud audio. The claps and other sound info in the background on the JD Sumner clip are identical to this. Lip synced. Not criticizing, just that is what I found.

  • I think He did really well and the message was good too thanks

  • in case you cant tell this is JD Sumner and the stamps and these guys are playing a joke lip synking

  • you should have heard JD Sumner live OMG unbelievable, many times I stood beside him on stage, not only was he extremley deep but way more powerful than you would expect. But i can still appreciate the awe of this spectacle very good!

  • Dude this sounds exactly like the song Rainbow of Love with the Restoration Quartet. Except there are different words.

  • @15btdunlap that's because someone put these words to the same music

  • J.D. Sumner is about the best that there ever was for hitting the low notes.

  • Nope ....

  • That is Dr Cecil Taylor singing bass.

  • Comment removed

  • Dont even compare JD to Tim storms hes a joke and not even a real Bass singer, if you cant be heard without a mike you are not a real bass TIM RILEY GENE MACDONNALD BIG CHIEF NIC VAL RICHARD STERBAN JD SUMNER ALL REAL BASS SINGERS sombody has to bring up the performance bar in this industry with hot mike phoneys who pretend to be Bass singers!!!!

  • @Bassclef50 Tim Storm is not even a bass compared to JD...sad and pathetic but true

  • @Bassclef50 I suppose by calling him a joke you can go as low as they can? Voices like theirs are a gift, you should enjoy it, not complain about it.

  • @Bassclef50 DONT FORGET GEORGE YOUNCE LONDON PARRIS, HERMAN HARPER

  • @fourpartharmony1 You mentioned The Chief. He's probably my favorite

  • Thats not J.D. Sumner on the track. i am pretty sure its Harold Gilley as he was known for his JD Sumner impersonation. I recently posted the original Rainbow Of Love recording by JD Sumner and if you listen to it you will hear the difference in tone and quality. JD and the stamps never recorded a Christmas take on Rainbow of love nor did the Masters V! just look up their discography.

  • Does Harold Gilley have an official recording of this?

I'd like to know once and for all. We'd have people lip-synch this at church back in the the mid-to late 90's...and our music minister told us it was JD Sumner...

There was another recording of this where later in the song the bass would suddenly go into falsetto for a few seconds and then would go back down to the lower register. One of the lip-synchers would nudge the bass just before he'd switch back to the low notes.

  • @randyjsing

I stand corrected. This is JD Sumner and the stamps. Fellow youtuber WILLSONT30 supplied me with the original version from a JD Sumner and the stamps concert and I posted it on my page with his permission.

  • Comment removed

  • @thebassmanadam thanks for the proof bro! This has been a discussion that has gone on for at least a couple of years. I'm glad there's finally some resolution. I knew it was JD, but couldn't prove it.

  • @randyjsing

Thank you for the compliments my friend! I wish my vid was an actual vid where you saw JD but I know for a fact its JD. Wouldn't of found the original recording if it wasn't. My friend here on youtube WILSONT30 is a huge southern gospel collector and a huge JD fan and hasall of JD's stuff including this song and this recording is indeed from a JD Sumner and the stamps live recording. I a glad the debate is put to rest now if everyone else on this comment page would read this....

  • @thebassmanadam you're welcome! I'm so glad you were able to post it. Not only that, there are a few other vids on youtube of other people lip-synching it too. Thanks again. Now I'll stop commenting so much on here for now...lol. I'm interested in hearing what some of the posters have to say that were convinced that it wasn't him. Regardless though...fun stuff.

  • @randyjsing

I am interested to hear what they have to say as well. I have seen those other vids as well.

I am glad I was proven wrong and that the debate can finally end.Your though, regardless.. it is fun stuff

  • That is definately not Harold. That is J.D. Just a different recording. You can tell it's him because of the fact that he can't stay on pitch on the lower notes :)

  • @dabeinman>> Jd Sumner has been all of his life able to stay on pitch especially bellow what you and I concider to be LOW. He's Famous world wide for it!!! And Harold is a good singer but anybody who has been raised up listening to Southren Gospel Music can easily hear the difference between the two.

  • @jalsante75 I don't want to fight. I have grown up listening to Southern Gospel and I know for a fact that the bass singer is NOT Harold Gilley. The tone of Harold and this guy are completely different. That is J.D. Sumner. I wasn't trying to put J.D. down in any way, I was just saying that when he got real low he would flat. And I personnally think Harold is a MUCH better singer than J.D. He had better resonance, clarity, was on pitch more often, and could go every bit as low as J.D.

  • It's the stamps quartet with J.D. Sumner....obviously.

  • Actually the record for lowest note is now held by Tim Storms. He broke it by more than an octave and a half.

  • @OhioBoyz07 Tim storms voice isn't even in the same class as J.D. Sumner...J.D. Never bottomed out...he didn't care..He talked lower than Tim storms can think and didn't have to have 4 subwoofers and 10,000 watts to hear it.

  • Oh I totally agree with you. JD's tone is way better than Tim's! I was just saying that Tim holds the world record now, not JD.

  • @OhioBoyz07 You know I don't know why they do this...I think they just have to have something "Different" and can't let ol' J.D.'s voice rest in peace..you know what I mean?

  • @bigmrclean dud your a dumb ass this isnt tim storms u stupid fuck

  • @Slasher555000991. This is one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. If you're going to insult someone at least spell it right you half wit. Did anybody say this was tim storms? In fact did anyone ask for "slasher" to even open his simple mouth? If anyone wants any shit out of you we'll squeeze your head you piece of crap. Why don't you come talk to me like that to my face you stupid bastard. Some people shouldn't even be able to turn a computer on.

  • @bigmrclean

J.D. is getting far more credit than he deserves. Tim Storms might not be more pleasant to listen to than J.D., but please do not try to make J.D. more than he was. His voice was ok here and there but mostly very raspy or strained. In those songs where he sounds alright a sneaky electric bass is backing him up, smoothing out the notes.

  • @Jouwl Like him or not, the truth is no human voice has ever been able to match JD. That's why record seekers are still being compared to him. That's also why Tim Storms has not been mentioned as the possible voice behind this video.

  • @ChangsUncle

JD's C record was broken long ago, what do you mean?

  • @Jouwl C1 was taken from a recording that was sent to Guinness. The common misconception is that JD never went any lower. So much for records. Tim Storms has a (measured) single digit hz along with the claim of being inaudible in that range. Two very different circumstances. My generation has a term called "usable singing range" , throw that into the mix and you can see why there's so much debate.

  • @ChangsUncle

When 'usable' singing range is considered the debate will never end since it's 100 % subjective.

For example, I personally do not like JD's timbre as he descends. Tim Riley's sound is a lot more pleasant to me.

Let's conclude that we disagree about JD =]

  • @ChangsUncle Match JD in what respect? The ability to hit low notes? I've heard him sing songs where he had to halfway whisper in order to reach the note. My dad could match that and so can I. Tonal quality? I've heare many others with equal or better tone. That's a matter of opinion anyway. JD was definitely one of the greatest. I don't think anyone would argue with that, and it may be that he set the standard but in my opinion many others can match him. I bet he would be the first to admit it

  • @gregryf I agree on the tonal quality... That's why I prefer to listen to Russian Orthodox quires singin...

  • @danilich89 I forget what I said but it's nice to have you agree with me. I listened to a couple of those Russian guys too. They were unbelievable.

  • @bigmrclean when J.D was young he did'nt speak low. It's because bass singing makes your voice lower and richer.

  • i'm 16 and go to a C2 maybe a B1

  • thats really good. im 14 and can only get an E-Eb range, but if i fry the notes i can get what this guy did. if u do it right it sounds pretty similar.

  • if thats the lowest you've heard then you've never listened to tim riley dude

  • This is a play on the Song "There's a Rainbow" Very nice

  • well is that good that i can hit a low E and im only 16 or is that just normal?

  • i can hit a low E and i am only 16 is that good and will my voice get any lower?

  • its not that low a good bass is being able to hit a low C, your voice should get lower

  • @eugenegold When you say low C, are you talking about the C below middle C ? That's not so low. Or do you mean the second C below middle C? I have always called that low low C.

  • @gregryf in your description it would be the low low C

  • o cara canta praticamente arrotando

  • SO LOW!

  • To the person who posted this...do u have more information, like when this took place, where, the event and the singers?

  • 4:02- 4:10. my whole house shook!!

  • E1........

  • He actually bends down to a D1 for a couple seconds before sliding up to the sustained E1.

  • @GamingDrummer89 Very true. I guess that eliminates the bass guitar's and double bass' competition when all four strings are in standard tuning! xP

  • I Have a Copy of J. D. Sumner and The Stamps, singing this Song it is Titled Christmas Carols of Love.

  • What would I give for that copy........Is there a album with this song? Where did you get it?

  • I like the guy next to the bass guy how he pulls the better singer back and then he does that arrogant little bow. he didnt do crap!

  • Does anyone know where and if this song can be purchased on cassette or cd would love to find this and perform this for our church and high school Christmas program

  • Wasn't long after the Stamps version of Rainbow of Love came out that everyone was lip syncing it. 30 some years ago I saw it performed in a high school auditorium. Not sure when the Christmas version came out but this is JD and the Stamps. The harmony here is distinctive Stamps especially 4:18- 4:23. Who else, even today, could duplicate JD's voice? It's the real thing folks.

  • There is another lipsynch performance with the same song but a different group on here. Not as good a performance. Youtube title is christmas carols of love and the "owner" is cinematicfilm

I tried to post the link but it won't let me : (

  • Ialso thought it was J.D. and was excited to here this guy in light of J.D.'s passing. I Googled him only to learn he & the others are professors at Univ. of Mobil. Then Lol I read the post here about possible lip synching. It totally makes sense! If it is lip synching then Wow!! What a perfectly executed performance! I love it either way. It is the same melody as J.D.'s version of Rainbow of Love. Maybe I'll email these professors and get the truth. I think we were duped lol but it was a great

  • i first thought it was jd, but after listening a few times its not him, plus if u r a jd fan u know as a bass singer he kills it at the end of a song, this guy did what he does & he is good aswell but there is a difference b/w him and jd

  • The guy in the video is lip-synching, and the voice COULD NOT POSSIBLY be anything other than J.D. Sumner. If you don't think it's him you need to listen to some JD Sumner Youtube vids.

  • or mabey he has a similar voice?

  • No. It's obvious that everyone in the crowd knows the guy, and knows he can't normally sing that low, because they're laughing the whole time at the joke. And no one has a similar voice to JD Sumner - he's in the guinness Book of World Records for hitting the lowest note made by a human - his voice is UNIQUE.

  • i don't believe any of this lip-syncing crap. unless anyone puts the JD version on youtube and compares them i'd say this guy's for real. and he's bloody good. just get over it, some dudes just have rediculously good low voices. plus i don't think it does sound like JD. and if it was him he probably woulda ended on a low note too right?...

  • Obviously lip-syncing to J.D. Sumner and the Stamps, but a wonderful performance never the less!! Great post!!

  • That is not J.D. you morons...doesnt even sound like him

  • @cactusjackish are you sure about that?

    Look this up...watch?v=6k08H9TUxYk

BTW it sounds JUST like JD Sumner.

  • it the sam melody as "rainbow of love"

yo sould lisen to it when Tim Rley sigs it, he goes pretty low (g1 i think)

  • Yes it's JD now doubt at all. Just wondering if some people are more honest in the comments when they really don't know the identity of the voice.

  • that doesnt sound like JDs voice but it doesnt sound like its comin from that guy

  • i can sing that low

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW...!!!

  • They're lip-singing to "Christmas Carol of Love" by JD Sumner & The Stamps which was a christmas version of "Rainbow of Love." A lot of places do this. At Thomas Road Baptist, they had a quartet of elves do a rather humorous version in which the bass passed out after the lowest note.

  • wow......that is nothing sort of amazing. what a great voice!

  • ok, for everyone that is sayin thats not JD, find anything else from this quartet and post it. Im going with JD and the Stamps until somebody gives me proof that this guy can sing like that.

  • LOL, GBU, JD!

  • JD and the stamps were a great gospel quartet, i wish they were still here. Is there an actual video of the JD and the Stamps singing this song? The music is from "Rainbow of Love", but fits the Christmas lyrics perfectly. Nice lip-sync fellas, it was entertaining.

  • What is the song?

  • Almost?

  • very good this is group is very good they can sing and entertain a double wammy!!LOL

  • thats not JD

  • he probably sang all his life as a bass baritone

  • With a voice like that you could scare people^^

  • nossa mãe iso que é baixo heinnn!!!

eu sonho com uma voz destas qual nome dele???

    que DEUS abeçoe

  • holy crap. i can only keep up until about 3:30 or so... ridiculous

  • so JD and The Stamps but fun to watch

  • I'm a bass and can go to really low notes, except the low G at 3:45. Awesomeness, and later, when he kneels down and shakes the planet with his bassness was cool.

  • That's pretty funny.. and yes, that's JD singing LOL.. to the tune of a cathedrals song.. Rainbow of Love

  • 4 any1 that knows what is the low bassists name

  • they say it in the beginning: dr cecil taylor but i think hes lipsyncing and the real singers name is jd sumner

  • They're lip synching a world famous bass singer named JD Sumner.

  • JD Sumner is in the Guiness Book of Records as the lowest bassist

  • @ljr1107 It would be interesting to know how many basses tried out for that position

  • Comment removed

  • You can`t find this song anyway. No matter who actually sings it. It`s impossible...

  • Thanks for sharing this video

  • even though that is JD it's still fun to listen to!

  • This is J.D. Sumner's voice, but a great job of lip-syncing by whoever that guy is. He does a super job.

  • FAIL

  • Seems impossible to me to find this song in the internet. It`s like a big secret isider of christian events like this one. But there are a few people out there who got this recording. It must be available somewhere...

  • You guys are ignorant if you think this is lip syncing. I know these guys. No stacks. No lip syncing. That is them. Do your research.

  • If you know them, how are they called? I can`t understand the host.

  • The "Bass" is Dr. Cecil Taylor, proffesor of christian studies?

  • @julianellee you know them? Okay...here's the recording of JD Sumner singing it.

    watch?v=6k08H9TUxYk

Oh, and here are OTHER groups lip-synching it just like the guys you claim to know so well. Ignorant?

    watch?v=ETqJwEMJn2U

and kids are even doing it...

    watch?v=muJr6ARuWog&feature=related

  • I have been a long time fan of the Stamps Quartet, and I agree that the bass sounds an awful lot like JD Sumner, but the other three don't sound at all like the other 3 members of the Stamps Quartet.

  • Without a doubt its JD Sumner

  • wait, did he just pull him out in 2:28?

the bass end early but his voice leads on, is that just an echoe? or am I wrong?

  • the audio is slightly off sync.

put your tin foil hat back on

no one is that bad at lip syncing.

  • I agree this is suspicious. I've read about this video elsewhere on the Internet and the agreement is that we're dealing with lipsynching. I guess I'm just curious why they would do it. It's like ending a symphony performance with mimes or ventriloquists.

  • I agree with WL grad 05

These guys are lip syncing to jd sumner and the stamps. If not this guy has JD,s voice nailed

  • nah, they are def lip syncing to jd and the stamps, his voice is soo recognizable

  • they are lip syncing to the stamps quartet

  • great, thanks for sharing

  • Man! That's the first "C#" I heard sung that low!!!!!

  • jd sumner who is acually the singer here held the record with a C. Its been beat now as far as I know by two other super basses.
