In case you are interested, here is the circuit for making an accurate current and power consumption measurement for any type of setup where it is difficult to make the measurement with an analog or digital multimeter:

You basically convert the pulsing current waveform into a smooth DC waveform and then make a few measurements on the smooth DC waveform and crunch some numbers and you are done. It will work for any arbitrary waveform and also for reactive loads.

Sounds like St. Elmo's Fire to me. Aaron posted a good link that explains how air ionizes and forms a plasma the other day. The article is from the mid-thirties, and makes reference to researchers at the turn of the last century, so it's gotta be legit. lol

I am just guessing that last night perhaps the air was humid and naturally ionized. I think that may promote the generation of the corona effect.

The bottom line is that the electric field strength around the wires was strong enough to strip some electrons off of the various air molecules. High energy free electrons crashing into other air molecules would bump up some of the molecule's orbiting electrons into a higher energy level. When the orbiting electrons jump back down to their normal energy level they give off a photon of violet light. It is kind of like ringing a bell with a slightly delayed ring. It is energy changing form.

My lab is airconditioned - and at present in Thailand VERY dry. Humidity is in mid 40's. We checkit everyday twice since it is quite important with fiberglass work.

But the ion concept - yes that is what I suspect too. Now more people has found or duplicated it. I set out tonight to duplicate - and did.
