@TheGator2000 It really depends on your preferences. Europa Barbarorum is the most realistic game you will ever find. It is also fun ans spans the entirety of the known world at the time for the most part. There is a lage diversity in unit variety as well. Rome Total Realism VII centers on the mediterranean during the punic wars. The unit diversity is nowhere near where EB is. However, the it is still a very realistic and fun game.

can somebody help me? I've tried installing the rtr platinum 1.9 mod, but whenever i start the campaign it crashes to desktop, any ideas on why this might be?

@ithasnoanswers1 Make sure you have rome total war and barbarian invasion installed. Have patch 1.6 installed for barbarian invasion. It could be a bad download, uninstall and try a different download mirror. Se if this helps.

@magicjj7 I'd check your history if I were you, Hannibal kicked Roman ass on more than one occasion during the second Punic Wars - At Lake Trasimene he ambushed and detroyed a roman army led by Gaius Flaminius, he had defeated Tiberius Sempronius Longus at Trebia before that and in BC 216 Hannibal defeated consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. It is regarded as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history.

@HughJaxident67 Yes true but don't forget: They have been around centuries before Hannibal came along and they didn't fair to well against Rome. Hannibal success was not doubt great but not skill has much of the incompetence of Roman Generals and Luck. No matter what you see on T.V. about how military tacticians still study his tactics, which is obviously bullshit, he wasn't that great a lot of his big victories were pretty basic. Basic meaning his army was just better then the Romans.

@magicjj7 his army was a misfit army of naked gauls, iberians, numdians, with some libyian spearmen unlike rome who had an army of best equpidment and armor compared to rome he defeated 80,000 men with 20,000, on an open field, he brilliant his army only shock value was the elephants which was only used in one battle, he was brilliant.

@cierorecarnated Yea he was brilliant. He only won like two major victories. And you talk about Rome have super good equipment this was before the time of Roman Power. And the major victories he did have study their tactics he didn't do anything special common military tactics. The only real challenge he faced was against Scipio, and guess what happened there....he got spanked.

@magicjj7 he won 3 major victories and they were massive disasters for the romans, not to mention the romans were far better trained and double envelopment is a special tactic that isn't used very often also to note that scipio won by copying hannibals tactics and by the defection of hannibals cavarly

@stevenhaful Haha really? First of all Roman soldiers weren't professionally like they were after the reforms they were pretty much the same as Carthage's, peasants and farmers. The three victory's he did have were against poor leaders, not to mention they were ambushes and hit and runs, yea real great there. Scipio never copied his tactics, and his Calvary was irrelevant not to mention outnumbered 2 to 1. He got his ass kicked at Zama because it was face to face sword and shield.

@magicjj7 just because the reforms had not been enacted does not mean they were not professional soilders they were still deployed in ranks with the second and third lines being experienced, the first victory was due to an ambush but his major victories were due his cunning and use of terrain, and cannae was not a hit and run and has been cited as one of the greatest victories in history, the romans still had the most flexible army back then and at zama hannibals cavarly had defected

@magicjj7 hannibals numidian cavarly had defected so he had more infantry but was out numbered when it came to the cavarly, and got his arse kicked?, really he only just about lost had his cavarly listen to his orders of not engaging the roman cavarly then they would not have been able to charge at hannibals rear

you could have done more damage to those greek hoplites if you had either pushed your line futher back to exhaust that army more by marching forward but even more important you should have used your chariots already when the enemy was marching towards you, they would have been fatigued suffered a lot of casualties and might have had the light cavalry chasing you that you might have taken out by arrow or using your own cavalry

@RomanFighter1 probs best to go to total war center for downloads. About 2/3 years ago the total realism site was hacked or something so best use the community forum to get reliable links to download

you have to set the affinity in the task manager to one processor on rome and fraps to another. as jerichoman said... RTW doesnt support multicore prozessors.

I could never get into RTR, there were too many smalls things bugging me, so I couldn't enjoy, but I found Europa Barbarorum to be highly enjoyable.

Heir of Carthage, I do not know very much about your FPS problem with FRAPS, but I have a similar computer to yours and I have noticed that when playing on huge scale I get a lot of lag where my comp should be able to handle it because I have a quad core processor and RTW does not support multicore processing.

I don't know if that is your problem, but it seems possible.

@Claredeluney Yes, just download it and install it to your TW folder and it should work unless you have modded your game already then you might need to reinstall a fresh copy of RTW and patch it up to 1.5

hey heirofcarthage i got a tip for you

you play the batles and save the replays then you record the replays while you wach them! so you can get us close ups and you don't have to worry about lag while fighting and you can concentrate on the fighting while playing and the close ups while showing

HoC, I would actually highly reccomend you do a campaign with europa barborum, I think you will enjoy that a lot more, and also it is a very interesting mod to watch.

@Quentillius I believe he has said he had played EB and did not like it compared to RTR do to the fact that the AI seems to perform worse in EB. While the AI is the same in both mods RTR did a better job modifying formations which lets the AI keep their army in a reasonable formation.

Also, FOE uses the BI exe by default, with EB you have to modify it.

Overall I would say that EB + unofficial addons is better than RTR 6/Platinum, but FOE is on the same level as EB. I personally enjoy FOE more.

@Quentillius I find the historical info in EB to be interesting, but for me the skins, graphics, AI formations, and about everything else are inferior to RTR in my opinion.

actually carthage had some srt of super heavy chariot with an elephant replacing the horse team.then they decided to get rid of the chariot and just use the elephants as a smashing weapon.also the nurargic warriors youget should have a bow and sword.oh well they are cool anyways!

The al troops gets tired even when not figthing is it a bug or a realistic thing due to the armour the hoplites war.

Carthaginian hoplites have very good stamina and they are awsome!

You can't play as the "greeks" but you can play as Epeiros. RTR VII (this version is FOE) will include all of Greece in the map and will have several Greek and Macedonian factions however.
