Does anyone know if he ever did a recording of this? This is stunning, it works so well with a violin. A whole album of Chopin's Nocturnes, transcribed for violin & piano, with Perlman, would quite possibly be the greatest thing I've ever heard.
Perlman is performing next year in Toronto.I wanted to buy tickets. The Toronto Symphony will ONLY sell tickets in packages; you have to buy several recitals at a time, some of them for performances many don't care to see. And then they wonder why attendance (and revenues) are falling. Whoever runs their marketing department needs to be fired.
@SleepingBeautyViolin Chopin is at the peak of romantic melancholy. No other composers have his characteristics of that tense romantic emotional expression. And that is why you see Chopin as the most variely interpreted composer.(Did I just made up a word here?...)
@aloozer Just so you all know, this isn't Twitter. No need to put the " # " before a word... It doesn't tag it here on YouTube haha. Anyways, a beautiful interpretation of Chopin. I personally would like to shake this man's hand for a job well done.
it's odd when pianists first react to this song, pianists think 1:33 is Chopin's evoking of Polish folk music (which appears throughout his music because he missed his homeland Poland). But every violinist plays the chords romantically not light, pianists also think the cadenzas should be light... you have to realize that Milstein took the nocturn and transformed it to violin solo... we can't all imitate the piano sound! we don't want to
i love to listen to the original piano piece by Chopin, however, this performance, violin and piano version transcribed by Nathan Milstein is also wonderful, especially played by the violin genius like tzhak.......
@skatenec yes Sarah Chang equals him and how bout NATHAN MILSTEIN himself !!! Oh and i almost forgot Joshua bell and i guess Yuki manuela can go on the classement to!
@21violingirl I would hardly place Joshua Bell beside Perlman. Perlman at his best is a level Joshua Bell has or never will reach, he is a fine player, but Perlman is a descendant of the great line of violinists, the last of the old masters. It is foolish to even compare the two especially after hearing this video.
@SergeCWazukie Me either...sounds too....sterile? I know some say Midori, or Chang play like robots...but I think both of them add more to the piece than this particular recording. Midori's Carnegie Hall version is just about my favorite ever.
Oh my earth, did you see him playing those notes almost at the end? that is really hardcore and he did it like it was nothing. The one thing i would fix if i go back playing violin again is i would like to accomplish doing vibrato on the pinky finger.
@dzeljpiano Yes, totally agree, I would love to hear him play!!! One more thing to put down on my list for things that I dream about, however, I am determined to do them... Hopefully, hopefully, that will include seeing him in a live concert. I have never heard a violinist play the way he does; with such clarity of sound, and richness. I think he could play any violin and make it sound good!!
Hahaha, such a youtube hate fest. I am glad that this nocturne is played so elegantly. It drowns out the obnoxious intolerance of others. Keep it up, Perlman.
Way tooo fast! If you compare this with Midori Goto, this is zero! Sorry, nothing against Itzhak he's very good! But I don't like this. There are many emotions, but I think he isn't on the level, that he could play this, how it should be played!
ohh no somebody discovered this song through karate kid, is it such a bad thing? I mean they're discovering the music none the less. Quit being so stuck up about it.
@nfshaw1 - Hear hear!! I'm a classically trained musician, but even for me there have been great pieces that I first discovered through the movies (eg. Barber's Adagio via Platoon). If people have no other exposure to great classical music (which is generally the case nowadays), then I wonder how else exactly they are supposed to learn.
@RSVPBlogger thank you I am glad at least one person understands! I love clasical music but there have been many instances where i have discovered it through movies.
doesn't Midori play the song from the New Sherlock Holmes movie too?lol. The only reason this version is more popular is because Ronald Regan is in it.It can be said that Midori's performance at Carnegie hall is better, it has more range, the passion requires one to be far less introspective and far more mesmerized by the feeling that the piece transcends the player and the listener,it is pure solidary sorrow, inexplicable in it's way of not needing to play out like a two step ho-down like Perlman
