UNA DE LAS CANCIONES ITALIANAS DEL GRAN MIMMO, INMORTALES...CANTADAS EN EL MUNDO ENTERO Y TRADUCIDA A MUCHOS IDIOMAS, GRACIAS POR TANTA BELLEZA EN TUS COMPOSICIONES.
I love this song so much! It reminds me of when I was a child and my Beautiful Italian Grand mother always played this for us! It makes me feel so loved and warm when I hear it sung and Domenico was so fabulous! Wow! What a voice!! I wish he was still alive!! I am trying to learn this song for my Italian Dad!
One of the great songs of the 1950s and one of the few Italian hits to become a smash hit worldwide. Was #1 in the USA for 5 weeks in 1958 and also received Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year at the 1958 Grammys. Domenico is really pouring it on on this Ed Sullivan appearance, giving it everything he's got. Great performance. Domenico Modugno later went on to be a member of the Italian Parliament and a great humanitarian.
Passed away in 1994. Can't get over this TV shot, tho. Great!
Fantastic!!! This is a great song. I am sure Domenico also wrote the music and the lyrics to this timeless classic. I remember as a child of 9 or 10 years old, some 53-54 years ago in the UK, seeing this song win the Eurovision song contest on television. I am sure it was Domenico Modugno performing it for his country, Italy. Not long after, my Mother bought the Dean Martin version, most likely, because of the English lyrics.
As well as being great singers, the Italians sure write top songs..
Absolutely beautiful. The Latin languages are so wrapped in passion, whether it be Italian, French, Spanish or Portuguese. They were made to sing love songs.
If anyone here wants it I would be all too happy to put the actual translation of this gorgeous song into English for those who don't speak Italian. It is a real treat, sheer poetry!
@Babyhowdy233 I am in the process of learning the beautiful Italian version for my 92 year old 100% Italian Daddio! I would love to let you know when I actually get it right and perhaps you can view it on my channel. I tried to learn it in two weeks for my Dad's birthday and did post it on my channel but it really really needs more work. LOL
This song is a prime example of how too many gorgeous songs lose much of their poetry and grace when "translated" into English. You'd be surprised at how many folks I talk to think that Rydell's English version is an actual translation of this beautiful song when in fact it is anything but.

To goneoverboard2, your memory must be failing you. This song did not win Eurovision. It was an entrant in 1958, but only came third.

Volare... is like red shoes... every woman should have worn them...
If you are alive, you should should have sung along - at least once!
