I think Steve Walsh just got a hold of one of the first shipments of the cocaine era! The whole shipment, from the looks of it! I'm just glad he didn't hurt himself.......I hope. I'm surprised he didn't yank the guitar out of Kerry's hands and rip out the solo! HA! What an era.
That is some serious great singing, his pitch, phrasing and power all executed to an unbelievably high degree considering how much moving around he's doing.
@tonlo92 ... manufactured pop crap has been going on since the 50s. Frankie Avalon, Fabian, The Monkeys, Shaun Cassidy. I'm sure there are dozens more. They just fade away into obscurity.
Too bad HD camera's and TV's weren't invented back then. So we could enjoy real MUSIC in better quality. Would love to have bieber and gaga trash were hot back when primape's ruled the world.
wtf is wrong with Walsh?..... he must be on speed or meth,,,hopping around like some jiggaboo on crack and dressed in only scant shorty shorts like some fag!
@leonakita i rather think this is elfante because his voice is way different from walsh's, walsh's voice is more gentile en higher pitched ( and more powerfull)
@leonakita Thats not the worst he's been. Watch Kansas live at the Whisky 1992. Steve was taking massive amounts of crack cocaine and energy suppliments and as a result his voice went to shit and he was jumping around like a madman during the entire show. The only thing that saved that preformance was David Ragsdale on violin. Thank GOD that Walsh is sober now.
@TheXman511 Hating? I don't think those bands like Kansas very much to be honest, and let's not forget that the late singer in The Ramones called Kansas crap... lol But I defy you to mention a better drummer in rock than Ehart, I can't think of any though there are many I love like Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer, Mikkey Dee, Ian Paice or Neal Peart (more a percussionist in spirit than rock drummer).
@TheXman511 Nah, f*ck you. lol Ehart's evidently the best drummer ever in rock, Walsh the best singer, Livgren the best composer so you see there none of your indie, nu-rock, nu-metal, grunge, whatever, can't hold a candle to real talent in music and musicianship.
@TheXman511 Bach in 1991 at his prime are you SERIOUS??? Have you guys ever heard of Skid Row ?? How old are you who am I dealing with here ??? What made me think of Shannon Hoon ???? Have you ever heard of a band called Guns n Roses?? He was the 5th member basically when they recorded a little album that sold a couple copies called USE YOUR ILLUSION 1 & 2 .
If I am not mistaken this is either the same tour or the same concert as Two for the show...the vocals match perfectly....I dont even mind the dirty video.
Planet Earth. @stoolet Show me a video where any of those guys, who don't sound as good as Steve Walsh btw, are playing an instrument as difficult as an organ and doing handstands, and then we'll talk. Nothing compares with the voice OR the showmanship. Period.
@youngerc show you a video of Steve Perry doing handstands?? ummm no. We are not talking about handstands or are we ?? I can send you some videos from the olympics if you like? Thom Yorke and Steve Perry crush the voclas of Walsh if we are talking music Im not sure how there handstands are though.
Kerry Livgren in far from a fundamentalist Christian nut job...he is one of the founding members of this band, a very talented muscian, and a strong believer in Jesus Christ...so what do you believe in? Should I consider your beliefs or you a nut jub, because that is what you believe in? If so, then I guess your comment holds no water, because anyone who has any belief other than your own is a nut. Glad to be a nut then; I guess.
Yes, we all know Steve Walsh was an incredible singer, however what this rare video really shows, is that he was an awesome entertainer and keyboard player. Who else in the history of rock keyboards put on a show with the kicks and all? Look at clips of ELP and Yes....both had legendary keyboard players. But they, like most other keyboarders were mostly just there on the stage in terms of visual performance. I wish there were more clips of Kansas in their prime. Thanks for posting!
I never knew Steve Walsh was so over the top onstage. I always imagined him as being mellow from listening to the records. Kerry Livgren is definitely great.
Nice '70s era shorts, we all had them! Most energetic frontman in concert. Remember, this song is done at the end of the concert, and the bands still kicking hard! And "ChrisHaspeck", check out Dust in the Wind & Point of No Return for other vocalist instrument, you'll be happy you did.
@ChrisHaspeck@ChrisHaspeck Well Kansas does still make music like this. Search this site for their 2010 concerts and compare the old with the new. Sure they're different but still real and great. Ageless and still making it themselves. Not some computer generated, pitch fixing tracks.

Cocaine or no coke, Steve Walsh ALWAYS gives 110% , period! This is from the Canada Jam in 1978, which means that the ENTIRE concert is available in Kerry's vault. RELEASE IT NOW! The version of Lonely Street from this show is totally out of control! KANSAS just rocks, period. I'm a HUGE YES fan, and saw Kansas open for them in Atlanta in 2000, and Kansas BLEW them away!
I saw Kansas in 77 and 80 . Steve was one of the most energetic front man I had seen.Amazing shows ,amazing musicians.Tanks for the video.I also had shorts and tube socks to go with my adidas.God I'm old.
@wolfmankenny1 I had the glorious pleasure of being at this concert. I was 16 and travelled up from Belleville Ontario with some buds. I'd heard of this song, but I was absolutely blown away by this band and they shaped the music I've listened to ever since. Steve Walsh is amazing. He was this active the entire show, the band was so tight, the musicianship amazing.
I've managed to download the concert and I listen to it now quite frequently. Great show, great memory.
steve was a hyper full on front man back in the day...saw them a few times in the mid to late 70s and he always wore those short shorts(we all did) great live band!!
To think that Russell Simmons shorts were once "hip?"..the NBA wore them too, lol.Later it would be backwards "shorts" with practically full boxers showing.Ah,how times change...what will be next in the world of fashion?I seen Kansas on this tour in 78 in Denver...great,tight musicianship they were known for and a real bunch of unique personalities.I didn't stay real focused on them through the years but wasn't Steve Morse with them on guitar for a while later on?Cool video/song.
I still have an unused ticket for Kansas from 1979, on their Point Of No Return Tour. My friend who was supposed to drive us to the show, in Lexington, Ky., about 90 minutes away, blew his motor up racing his Chevelle earlier in the day. LOL. Had no way to get to the show. But I've kept the ticket all these years!!!
this just kicks ass and is original and unique.....i love the fact that there are not non-musician dancers and pop culture fashion and bullshit....like all of todays pre-programmed marketed bullshit. This is top 10 all time song right here.
I love this song sooo much!!! And this video kicks too much ass based solely upon the fact that it features tarzan in bicycle shorts and tube socks going apeshit on the bongos and the organ. This is without the greatest video ever.
God, Steve Walsh makes John Elefante look like an even bigger pansy than he already is. I saw Steve doing handstands on his organ once. OMG. Amazing live.
John is like watching Tom Jones perform with a rock band, no matter how strong his high range is.
Lively, It was. We saw Muse recently and it was very good to be sure, but sometimes too much polish subtracts from raw energy. Walsh really was all over the place and one of the best front men I've ever seen at a live show.
Such a great band. I can't believe my dad had the chance to meet them and hang out with them at their hotel. This was way back before they were popular when they were opening for some local band in Boston. They are one of the greatest hard rock/prog bands of all time.
It's live! This entire show with many bands was videotaped and recorded. This is a VHS recording and we all know what happens to those over time. If you search Kansas Carry On My Wayward Son Canada Jam 1978 you can see an almost pristine copy of this! The audio of this is from the soundboard. There are many such recordings that sound similar. Dry and clean.
Nobody is mentioning the other brilliant cat also named Steve. So I guess I will; Steve Morse.

What? Steve's singing the highs here!
Gregsynthbootlegs 1 year ago
@puzzler19 He is singing high enough. The harmony vocal is WAY too loud in the mix, which is what you are hearing.

when I saw these guys in concert in 78, it was Kerry Livgren in the micro shorts, only they were black and he was hot!

Here's a question for you Kansas fans. Would you rather "Carry On," "Hold On," "Sail On," or "Play On"
I hope Kansas continues to do all of them.

@derecweis, you forgot one. HOW LONG????? LOL.

I can't believe what a bank of talent is in this band. They are AMAZING!

this just kicks ass and is original and unique.....i love the fact that there are not non-musician dancers and pop culture fashion and bullshit....like all of todays pre-programmed marketed bullshit. This is top 10 all time song right here.

I love this song sooo much!!! And this video kicks too much ass based solely upon the fact that it features tarzan in bicycle shorts and tube socks going apeshit on the bongos and the organ. This is without the greatest video ever.

I saw them in charleston w va on this tour and it was the most awesome concert in my lifetime, what musical talent they had!
sportsjock327 1 year ago
@sportsjock327 Unless that was the night of the blizzard, they were at the Galaxy the night before. I was right in front of the congas. Woohoo!!

I only have one word that will describe the immense awesomeness of this video.
Bongos.

God, Steve Walsh makes John Elefante look like an even bigger pansy than he already is. I saw Steve doing handstands on his organ once. OMG. Amazing live.
John is like watching Tom Jones perform with a rock band, no matter how strong his high range is.

isn't this Steve Walsh singing in this?

Joe Lynn Turner sounds very much like Steve Walsh here.

fabi2zan1 1 year ago
@fabi2zan1 Yes, this is Steve Walsh. I meant to say that in my ears Turner sounds like Walsh as if Turner was influenced by Walsh.

That must have been so awesome!
This happened way before I was born, but the sheer amount of energy Steve plays with is phenomenal.
This looks a lot more fun than any concert I'd go to today.
LivelyLemur 1 year ago
Lively, It was. We saw Muse recently and it was very good to be sure, but sometimes too much polish subtracts from raw energy. Walsh really was all over the place and one of the best front men I've ever seen at a live show.

Such a great band. I can't believe my dad had the chance to meet them and hang out with them at their hotel. This was way back before they were popular when they were opening for some local band in Boston. They are one of the greatest hard rock/prog bands of all time.

No way that's live sound. It sounds far too dry and clean..
miklelottesen 2 years ago
