  • Nobody is mentioning the other brilliant cat also named Steve. So I guess I will; Steve Morse.

  • spn brought me here

  • vielleicht 4-5 super Lieder aber der Rest sehr langweilig

  • yah u hit dem bongos

  • That dude is a BEAST on keys and congas (or whatever they are)!

  • THUMBS UP if you wished Steve Walsh had arm bracelets so he looked just like the Ultimate Warrior!

  • SEXY in those shorts!

  • They sound like they are on speed.

  • gotta love that 1:50 oooh yeah

  • WOW! What a performance! Steve Walsh kicks ass!!!!

  • fuck the keybord i will plyy the bongos like a king at 1:51

  • Does anybody know the name of the guy singing lead vocals? He's excellent. What a voice.

  • @grandabell That would be the one and only Steve Walsh...He of the superb vocals, hammond and handstands!!

  • whats hagrid doing here

  • need to get me a pair of those shorts

  • 6 people claim to be wise men...it surely means that they don't know.

  • Amazing !!!! And before the introduction of Red Bull ?!?! ;))

  • Wow talk about the volume in that guys hair 0.0

  • I think Steve Walsh just got a hold of one of the first shipments of the cocaine era! The whole shipment, from the looks of it! I'm just glad he didn't hurt himself.......I hope. I'm surprised he didn't yank the guitar out of Kerry's hands and rip out the solo! HA! What an era.

  • Classic Rock. . Classic Kansas!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Steinhardt totally makes up for the lack of movement by the other band members

  • That is some serious great singing, his pitch, phrasing and power all executed to an unbelievably high degree considering how much moving around he's doing.

  • @severrian He's not moving that much... Go watch a broadway musical; this doesn't even compare.

  • The ultimate warrior sings? 0_0

  • @zevolta88

you recognized him without the makeup? o_O

  • @zevolta88 More like Shawn Michaels..... and Mick Foley on backing vocals. XD

  • ...more cowbell!

  • oh i would give everything to see them live at that time... but poorly i was born in '79 ;)

  • lol im sorry love the song but could NOT get over those shorts xD

  • Keyboards Bongos and TUBE SOCKS

  • wish i was there... awesome show...

  • this is back when you had to have talent, not just a cute haircut, Disney show or scandal to make it.

  • @tonlo92 ... manufactured pop crap has been going on since the 50s. Frankie Avalon, Fabian, The Monkeys, Shaun Cassidy. I'm sure there are dozens more. They just fade away into obscurity.

  • Thanks to the amazing tv show called Supernatural for making me found this AWESOME songggg

  • Too bad HD camera's and TV's weren't invented back then. So we could enjoy real MUSIC in better quality. Would love to have bieber and gaga trash were hot back when primape's ruled the world.

  • i like the original

  • Love Kansas some are hotter than the rest..xo jill

    lusciously you:)

  • wtf is wrong with Walsh?..... he must be on speed or meth,,,hopping around like some jiggaboo on crack and dressed in only scant shorty shorts like some fag!

  • @leonakita i rather think this is elfante because his voice is way different from walsh's, walsh's voice is more gentile en higher pitched ( and more powerfull)

  • @leonakita Thats not the worst he's been. Watch Kansas live at the Whisky 1992. Steve was taking massive amounts of crack cocaine and energy suppliments and as a result his voice went to shit and he was jumping around like a madman during the entire show. The only thing that saved that preformance was David Ragsdale on violin. Thank GOD that Walsh is sober now.

  • That better version is actually a lip sync, except for the lead vocal

  • @dhmartens i doubt it sceicne all the voices sound live.

  • theres a WAY better version on youtube of these guys live.

  • the main singer not wearing a shirt does not make this the best live kansas video ever lol

  • @TheXman511 Ward's a pretty good choice, the man's an animal machine! Peach, bro.

  • @TheXman511 Hating? I don't think those bands like Kansas very much to be honest, and let's not forget that the late singer in The Ramones called Kansas crap... lol But I defy you to mention a better drummer in rock than Ehart, I can't think of any though there are many I love like Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer, Mikkey Dee, Ian Paice or Neal Peart (more a percussionist in spirit than rock drummer).

  • @TheXman511 Nah, f*ck you. lol Ehart's evidently the best drummer ever in rock, Walsh the best singer, Livgren the best composer so you see there none of your indie, nu-rock, nu-metal, grunge, whatever, can't hold a candle to real talent in music and musicianship.

  • Bongo solo and bitchin' facial hair. Better than anything in the charts

  • @TheXman511 Bach in 1991 at his prime are you SERIOUS??? Have you guys ever heard of Skid Row ?? How old are you who am I dealing with here ??? What made me think of Shannon Hoon ???? Have you ever heard of a band called Guns n Roses?? He was the 5th member basically when they recorded a little album that sold a couple copies called USE YOUR ILLUSION 1 & 2 .

  • If I am not mistaken this is either the same tour or the same concert as Two for the show...the vocals match perfectly....I dont even mind the dirty video.

  • intense ha .......... the shorts... and that man has really a long hair.......... the longest i've ever seen for a man

  • amazin song and band. and i love the sexy shorts :)

  • LEGEND

  • Yep, way better than those. Sebastian Bach...wtf... -That guy couldn't sing to save his life...! lol

  • @komodoman Bach cant sing what planet are you from ?? in 1991 he was named the best rock/metal singer in the intire world I dont know about now?

  • Planet Earth. Doesn't bother me what this Bach guy was voted in 1991, the 90s sucked big time for most acts, even Walsh wasn't too hot at that time. -In fact his voice was pretty shot then to be honest, but Bach a great singer...I don't think so. He's just like any other late 80s/early 90s metal singer, much better singers were guys like Mark Free (Signal/King Kobra) or Freddy Curci (Sheriff/Alias).

  • @komodoman The 90s SUCKED ??????? Ummmm The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana , Sound Garden, NIN, Blind Melon, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Screaming Trees , Tool, Hole, Janes Addiction, Beck, Hum, Red Hot Chilli Peppers Yeeeeahhhh The 90s sucked bad lol lol lol lol Dude you are a tool.

  • @stoolet You bet your ass all that monotonous 90s shit you mentioned there, each and every one of them, sucked big time. Utter crap. lol

  • @komodoman Well that completely sums it up. You are either A) Slow B) Deaf. I like Kansas they practiced right down the street from where I live I actually have one of there drum heads from the 70s, but to say that the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and STP were monotonous is just WAAAAAAAAY beyond anything I can imagine.

  • @stoolet Compared to Kansas they damn well are, hah... I don't think you understand music very well.

  • @komodoman If you are going to put Kansas even on the same level as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers And The Stone Temple Pilots I dont think you understand music at all! I also think you have a mullet and drive a 84 firebird with your Reo Speedwagon t shirt on.

  • @stoolet Nice try, I'm afraid it's the opposite situation, haha. Those amateur bands can't hold a candle to these guys, this is songwriting, not riff crap and lullaby ballad rock... No mullet, ever. What the hell would I want with a REO shirt, when I'm a Kansas man... lol My good man, you want cliches and chords any granny or kid could chop, keep listening to the limited abilities of the indies/nu metal, etc... :-p

  • @komodoman you dont have to listen only to the guitars (they are pretty good). you have also to hear the breaks of the drum, which are not very easy sometimes ! this drummewr is better then the metal gaylords with their dubblebasses !

  • @stoolet

Is this a joke? Kansas vs. The Red Hot Chili Peppers? That's like saying that we should be putting Lady Gaga up there with Beethoven. Kansas wins that fight any day... their years of experience alone puts them on top, not to mention the profound musicianship.

  • if a white man in that time can play keybord like that and make it look like the most amazing thing in the world, why the hell cant the little gay screamo bands? cmon guys...this is music. lets bring it back. LETS ALL FORM tRIBUTE BANDS To the GuYS LIKE KANSAS AND SABBATH! :D

  • Pure talent.

  • And I second that completely, maybe the best singer ever in the entire history of live rock music, always such amazing phrasing...

  • @komodoman lol what!!!!!!!! WOW. I mean hes good but come on "the entire history of rock music" ??? Steve Perry, Sebatian Bach, Miljenko Matejavic,Thom Yorke, Shannon Hoon,Layne Stayley,David Lee Roth, Peter Gabriel,

  • @stoolet Show me a video where any of those guys, who don't sound as good as Steve Walsh btw, are playing an instrument as difficult as an organ and doing handstands, and then we'll talk. Nothing compares with the voice OR the showmanship. Period.

  • @youngerc show you a video of Steve Perry doing handstands?? ummm no. We are not talking about handstands or are we ?? I can send you some videos from the olympics if you like? Thom Yorke and Steve Perry crush the voclas of Walsh if we are talking music Im not sure how there handstands are though.

  • @stoolet dude don't fuckin go comparing Thom "Misarable fuckin twat" Yorke to Steve Walsh ok?

  • Singers these days can only dream they where this talented

  • Holy Video.

  • holy shit this video is old :o fkn amazing tho

  • Kerry Livgren in far from a fundamentalist Christian nut job...he is one of the founding members of this band, a very talented muscian, and a strong believer in Jesus Christ...so what do you believe in? Should I consider your beliefs or you a nut jub, because that is what you believe in? If so, then I guess your comment holds no water, because anyone who has any belief other than your own is a nut. Glad to be a nut then; I guess.

  • @dwjones Kerry Livgren: guitars, keyboards, synthesizers

  • well this is real rock :)

  • Great video. I think I wore those same shorts and socks to day camp that summer! =)

  • wtf! Why this video have a dislike buton?

  • Kansas is touring this Spring and Summer (USA and Europe) (2011).

  • Unreal, what a freakin' show!

  • Yes, we all know Steve Walsh was an incredible singer, however what this rare video really shows, is that he was an awesome entertainer and keyboard player. Who else in the history of rock keyboards put on a show with the kicks and all? Look at clips of ELP and Yes....both had legendary keyboard players. But they, like most other keyboarders were mostly just there on the stage in terms of visual performance. I wish there were more clips of Kansas in their prime. Thanks for posting!

  • oh dear we don't mind the yellow shorts, just happy he doesn't were it to concert these day lol

  • Swedenrock... after 32years....... from this video...

    Kansas is Awsome!!

  • @MrMeddled Canada 1978.

  • Robbie Steinhart married my cousin..

  • This is Kansas at their absolute best! Steve Walsh was at the top of his game!

  • This is one of the reasons why rock will live forever!

  • this song lyrics is christian inspired

  • Extremely musically talented, and also A major badass. (comment if you caught that) I see why they saw him as a keeper.

  • @Cheesecake2k I got it :D

  • @Cheesecake2k i uprisate waht u re tring to say but im more on side of metal black metal and death metal

  • @Cheesecake2k ha A major.. brings me back to all the corny orchestra jokes that always seemed to put down the violas.. lol

  • @Cheesecake2k i caught that

  • It's the not the shorts that are so amusing. It's actually the shorts combined with the tube socks pulled up almost to the knee.

  • Where can I still get one of these thumbnail sized shorts? You can store a little bird in it and keep it warm :-D.

    The song is fantastic!

  • steave has one of if not the best voice in rock!!!

  • that was fucking amazing.

  • Detroit, 1979.

  • I never knew Steve Walsh was so over the top onstage. I always imagined him as being mellow from listening to the records. Kerry Livgren is definitely great.

  • Only one thing can be said....COCAINE!!!! I was waiting to see his heart shoot out of his chest and fly out into the crowd

  • That's funny, He's still playing and singing his ass off 32 years later and his heart still seems to be in his chest.

  • beautiful.....sigh

  • killer bongos

  • They are Congas.

  • @rickyon

ohh i feel like a dumbass

  • No, lots of people make that mistake.

  • @rickyon hahah yeah great music huh

  • Nice '70s era shorts, we all had them! Most energetic frontman in concert. Remember, this song is done at the end of the concert, and the bands still kicking hard! And "ChrisHaspeck", check out Dust in the Wind & Point of No Return for other vocalist instrument, you'll be happy you did.

  • I had no idea their backup vocalist didn't play an instrument.

but whatever .. they do not make music like this anymore.

pffft .. this is amazing live performance. And poeple thought

that loser Kurbain from Seatle was good. THIS is music !!

  • @ChrisHaspeck @ChrisHaspeck Well Kansas does still make music like this. Search this site for their 2010 concerts and compare the old with the new. Sure they're different but still real and great. Ageless and still making it themselves. Not some computer generated, pitch fixing tracks.

  • @ChrisHaspeck He does play the violin, Robby Steinhardt.

  • Cocaine or no coke, Steve Walsh ALWAYS gives 110% , period! This is from the Canada Jam in 1978, which means that the ENTIRE concert is available in Kerry's vault. RELEASE IT NOW! The version of Lonely Street from this show is totally out of control! KANSAS just rocks, period. I'm a HUGE YES fan, and saw Kansas open for them in Atlanta in 2000, and Kansas BLEW them away!

  • see kids...this is what cocaine does to you. LOL. Rock on Steve!!

  • I saw Kansas in 77 and 80 . Steve was one of the most energetic front man I had seen.Amazing shows ,amazing musicians.Tanks for the video.I also had shorts and tube socks to go with my adidas.God I'm old.

  • @wolfmankenny1 I had the glorious pleasure of being at this concert. I was 16 and travelled up from Belleville Ontario with some buds. I'd heard of this song, but I was absolutely blown away by this band and they shaped the music I've listened to ever since. Steve Walsh is amazing. He was this active the entire show, the band was so tight, the musicianship amazing.

I've managed to download the concert and I listen to it now quite frequently. Great show, great memory.

  • =K ROCKS= !

  • steve was a hyper full on front man back in the day...saw them a few times in the mid to late 70s and he always wore those short shorts(we all did) great live band!!

  • its going way to fast and its not as good as they are know know they r amazing live

  • Hands down, one of the best rock songs ever written

  • I cant believe how smooth and soft his voice was back than. He really sounds harsh and rough now, his voice has been declining for 10 years or more!

  • I think if I had that body and could sing and play like that I'D wear those yellow micro shorts, no doubt about it!!! What a legend!

  • Classic Rock. . Classic Kansas!! Carry On!!!

  • Probably the only keyboardist sex symbol?

  • To think that Russell Simmons shorts were once "hip?"..the NBA wore them too, lol.Later it would be backwards "shorts" with practically full boxers showing.Ah,how times change...what will be next in the world of fashion?I seen Kansas on this tour in 78 in Denver...great,tight musicianship they were known for and a real bunch of unique personalities.I didn't stay real focused on them through the years but wasn't Steve Morse with them on guitar for a while later on?Cool video/song.

  • like in another vid, walsh isnt singing it high enough....

  • What? Steve's singing the highs here!

  • @puzzler19 He is singing high enough. The harmony vocal is WAY too loud in the mix, which is what you are hearing.

  • :D one of them looks like hedwig from harry potter :D

and the song is really nice !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • essa musica é á cara do dean do supernatural ,,,parece q foi feita para o personagem

  • 1st performance of carry on my wayward son

    watch?v=fZ_taL3pWcs

  • when I saw these guys in concert in 78, it was Kerry Livgren in the micro shorts, only they were black and he was hot!

  • major props to walsh for rocking the short shorts

  • I still have an unused ticket for Kansas from 1979, on their Point Of No Return Tour. My friend who was supposed to drive us to the show, in Lexington, Ky., about 90 minutes away, blew his motor up racing his Chevelle earlier in the day. LOL. Had no way to get to the show. But I've kept the ticket all these years!!!

  • Here's a question for you Kansas fans. Would you rather "Carry On," "Hold On," "Sail On," or "Play On"

I hope Kansas continues to do all of them.

  • @derecweis, you forgot one. HOW LONG????? LOL.

  • Kinda dig the whole twin 335 thing :D

  • great performance

  • What is this, a pummel horse routine or a musical concert?

  • Give the guy a break on the shorts, this was back in '78

  • Classic Rock. . Classic Kansas!!!! Carry On!!!

  • Leftoverture. Greatest Kansas album EVER!!!

  • Okay congas ... whatever. I'm a keyboardist, I don't know any better ;)

  • He looks like a sexy version of "officer Dangle" on Reno 911...I could listen to that man sing to me for hours

  • I can't believe what a bank of talent is in this band. They are AMAZING!

  • this just kicks ass and is original and unique.....i love the fact that there are not non-musician dancers and pop culture fashion and bullshit....like all of todays pre-programmed marketed bullshit. This is top 10 all time song right here.

  • I love this song sooo much!!! And this video kicks too much ass based solely upon the fact that it features tarzan in bicycle shorts and tube socks going apeshit on the bongos and the organ. This is without the greatest video ever.

  • I saw them in charleston w va on this tour and it was the most awesome concert in my lifetime, what musical talent they had!

  • @sportsjock327 Unless that was the night of the blizzard, they were at the Galaxy the night before. I was right in front of the congas. Woohoo!!

  • I only have one word that will describe the immense awesomeness of this video.

    Bongos.

  • God, Steve Walsh makes John Elefante look like an even bigger pansy than he already is. I saw Steve doing handstands on his organ once. OMG. Amazing live.

John is like watching Tom Jones perform with a rock band, no matter how strong his high range is.

  • isn't this Steve Walsh singing in this?

  • Joe Lynn Turner sounds very much like Steve Walsh here.

  • @konked isn't this Steve Walsh singing?

  • @fabi2zan1 Yes, this is Steve Walsh. I meant to say that in my ears Turner sounds like Walsh as if Turner was influenced by Walsh.

  • oh ok. Thanks. Steve looks sooooo different in alot of his pics i wasn't sure. Awesome voice eh.

  • perfect!

  • I was there!

  • That must have been so awesome!

This happened way before I was born, but the sheer amount of energy Steve plays with is phenomenal.

This looks a lot more fun than any concert I'd go to today.

  • Lively, It was. We saw Muse recently and it was very good to be sure, but sometimes too much polish subtracts from raw energy. Walsh really was all over the place and one of the best front men I've ever seen at a live show.

  • Carry on, you will always remember

Carry on, nothing equals the splendor

Now your life's no longer empty

    Surely heaven waits for you

  • really old vid

  • i love this music

  • Tube socks FTW!!!

  • the best of the best

  • pump out those vocals hagrid!!! YEAH! damn i love this band :)

  • Such a great band. I can't believe my dad had the chance to meet them and hang out with them at their hotel. This was way back before they were popular when they were opening for some local band in Boston. They are one of the greatest hard rock/prog bands of all time.

  • @RyanDyerMusic ur dad is lucky as hell.. er heven(hell's not very lucky.

  • supernatural !!!!!!!!!

  • supernatural!! the best!

  • Steve Walsh is the only person who can still look awesome playing epicness on Organ and congas while wearing yellow micro-shorts!!

  • It is live...

  • Sure the singer doubled up as the ultimate warrior in wwf

  • Kansas in the original setup was live so tight as hell, i'm sure it's live!!

  • omg TOO MUCH ENERGY AHHhhhhhhhhh

  • It's live! This entire show with many bands was videotaped and recorded. This is a VHS recording and we all know what happens to those over time. If you search Kansas Carry On My Wayward Son Canada Jam 1978 you can see an almost pristine copy of this! The audio of this is from the soundboard. There are many such recordings that sound similar. Dry and clean.
