  • @olivasvince Actually, natives around michigan are very light skinned. I have several friends who look white, but are full native. So, in some cases, skin color doesnt determine whether a person is native or not. And for the record, i am Jicarilla Apache.

  • @unityspirit51 You don't count a human as a living animal?

  • @unityspirit51 You are funny, all modern plants used by humans require the work and death of animals. If you are really keen on human skn start by cutting off your scalp.

  • @unityspirit51

I also don't kill or eat animals. But if I find a dead animal I sometimes use it's skin. Here is why.. I feel as though I can honor that animals life and give it extended purpose. Maybe I am wrong in that.. but it's how I see it at this point.

  • Amen!!

Would you ever use Tallow to water proof?

  • @jacobjoes

Tallow would make an acceptable waterproof.. although it's not absolutely necessary

  • you could put your weed in there

  • awesome video... thank you and God bless..

  • hey how do you waterproof the pouches

  • @huntingf0r

A good soaking of oil works wonders.. You can use wax as well.. neither will keep water out of the opening.. but it will stop penetration through the leather

  • @BushcraftOnFire ik u guys dont like killing animals or whatever but if get some fat from the animal u can kinda get the greece of and rub it on the pouch or like boots and it waterproofs it :D hope it helped

  • nice video i loved it

  • this is a great video I've been searching to find something like this. I want to make something different though, a small tool pouch for drill bits and this is a perfect example. Nice people too. thanks

  • you guys r the shizznit life is good.

  • Cheers, this is exactly what I've been looking for. A quick vid on putting the leather together in pouch form and what stitches and tools to use. Now even my son wants to make a few of these for tinder and his powdered drink mix.

Great stuff because I'm not paying 10 notes on ebay, now I'm just sourcing the leather, improving some skills and getting something traditional for the effort.

Keep up the good work Bushcraftonfire

  • dude don't be an ass its still pretty cool so honestly stop being prejudice & let it be who cares what color peoples skin is we're all people nonetheless so honestly just kick rocks man

  • Why so bitter Oliva? When did Tam say this was the way Natives made their pouches? And when did she claim to be Native? (Although we have MANY Native friends.. and have been honored greatly by them)

And of course we don't have gold in there.. Tam said it was her "Medicine Bag" and she uses it to collect and keep medicinal herbs.

Sorry if somehow in life you have been offended.. if there is something that we can do to help you please let us know

  • lets not be a dick this is not how to do it the way the indians did it its jsut showing how to do it lay off

  • @olivasvince she said she was going to use it for times sake but calm down man,its just a sewing machine

  • @olivasvince THE WOMAN IS NO NATIVE

  • Thanks for the help first time doing something like this, you guys really helped alot, thanks again.

  • For the dye do you just dip it in or is there some special procedure to it?

  • Jorpr

We paint it on.. with a rag or brush

  • Great video guys, this one is going in my favorites

  • how do you dye the leather. i'm looking to make a gun scabard for my 30-30 cavalry carbine rifle and i would like to have a deep brown color to the leather can you please tell me how to dye it

  • There are dyes that you can buy commercially.. or you can use natural dyes from plants.. HTH

  • dear tam you did a great job on the pouch and if you decide to sell these pls let me know iwould gladly buy one,i love watching your videos,

  • Shadow..

They are available on our website.. Look on the right of the video.. there is a link to our site.. then go to the gear section.

  • ((Shadowsole6))

If you click in the box on the top right corner where it says more info, there is a link to the website where the pouches are listed.

Thank you for your encouragement, it's folks like you who make it all worthwhile, you are a blessing.

    Tam

  • Great pouch you made there Tam. Enjoyed watching. Thanks!

  • A piece of that rawhide cordage that Dave made would have made a nice draw string for your pouches!

  • great job Tam!!

  • what kind of needle are you using?

  • @Krylon,

I used a 14. Going to buy some needles they sell for heavy jean or canvas, but I don't want too big as I don't want to leave holes, the small ones don't leave a hole as the buckskin closes around the thread.

  • Great instructions there Tam. I hope to make one of these in the future. Also, glad to hear the hand has healed up!

  • Another wonder contribution.

  • Hi Tam, The finger looks great Praise The Lord. I took the top part of an old pair of moccasins and sowed them together and made a little pouch. Surprised me how well it turned out.

  • When I met my hubby I made a pouch out of the thumb of a baseball glove and put 5 smooth stones in it........just a reminder that any giant can be conquered :)

Great idea you shared! Thanks so much!!

The hand healed totally and now the scar is disappearing too! :) \0/

  • I take it making mittens would be similar to making a pouch?

  • Badlam..

In fact, old time mittens were a large pouch (most of the time lined) that tied off around the wrist. Later on they added thumbs

  • Awesome Tam. Thank you for paying homage to the creation and The Creator. Nice looking pouches.

  • I was big time in to TANDY as a kid. Leather projects are so fun.

    Nice thanks giving. :)

  • Amen to that brother, people tend to forget to thank God when they harvest an animal, or anything in the wild...it is his hand that placed it there, and his breath that brought it into being. Thanks for another great video

  • Those pouches are wonderfull ! Great job Tam!

  • Tam,

Very nice work, much appreciated on thanking the animal. John Campbell taught me to pinch a little bit of tobacco as a thanks to nature for it's gifts. Glad to see that the animal was respected in such a way!! Tell the girls when I get more paracord in I will be sending off their necklaces. Talk to you soon.

  • this is gr8 I'm hopeing to do somthing with my rabbit skins.

Is rabbit hide tough enough for moccasens ?

  • @grappler321 rabbit is not tough enough, but that would make a great cold weather shoe for your shelter if the hair is still on. Rabbit skin can also be used for making medicine bags. My daughter made a warm throw with several skins.

  • Hmm who ran into a deer on teh highway this week ... be a great way to get a fresh hide and some meat IF you catch The roadkill early. Thankfully up here you dont need a tag for raodkill deer or moose. They figure the repairs are enough of a penalty :)

  • Tam,could you teel me what needle you used ? Thanks

  • I used a 14.

  • Wonderful, thank you again!

  • Wow, giving Thanks to God and to the Calf, After watching to movie Food Inc, and the horrific lives the Animals we use and eat have, Giving thanks to the Calf is a really nice gesture of respect of live... Wish we all understood the value of such respect for life, people and God. Great Video.

  • Woops Live = Life

  • That's one reason why I prefer to buy free range, beef and chicken ... tastes bettr and animals are treated better. The factory farm meat has no real taste anymore it's all chemical growth and little activity for the animals.

  • Me too... Since the movie and reading the book "an omnivore's dilemma" we stopped eating out to afford the price of locally raised meats, meals and crops... Farmers Markets are of great value in the new economy. I raise chickens and I say every day of their lives are happy except their last day.

  • does tam only wear skirts what religion are u?

    gotta ask r u Wicca?

  • I'm guessing you didn't watch the end where she thanks our Heavenly Father for the animal that supplied the leather :)

If I had to guess on the skirt thing I'd say 1) skirts are super comfortable and 2) they are probably easiest to make :)

  • hit it on the nose.

But also, some denominations of christiantiy disallow women from wearing pants. But I'm not here to judge. Considering that Dave most likely has seen my channel and has said nothing of my beliefs. For that I thank him.

Great vid tam. Gotta catch the tanning vids.

  • Skirts are also easier to mend and prevent damage to. they can be warmer than pants in cold weather. all of this with the added benefit of being beautiful. thank you, Tam, for your wonderful videos!

  • Godsend & Dark

    First.. No we aren't Wiccan

We also aren't "religious" (wars have been fought over that ideaology) We DO believe in relationship with our Father in Heaven and HIS creation. Summed up in one word we believe in "love"... Love The Almighty, Love your neighbor, and Love YHWH's creation.

We are not judgemental toward others. Each has a right to believe as they desire and understand.. We don't believe in bashing others

As for the skirt.. Tam will probably comment

  • Safe to say you are Spiritual ... ALMOST Celtic in your belief's.

  • Good video Dave and Tam

  • Wonderful work! makes me want to dig out my awl and leather kits, Again something I have not done in many years. Guess I had better start practicing my skills from time past!

  • you could also use pine resin for treating the bag, leaving a dark brown color or mix the resin with charcoal for a black color, most natural way I can think of.

  • thank you Tam and Dave i really like the neck option

i think i may do this with cotton or synthetic material or mabey ill but leather just cuz i dont really hunt

my theroy is if im a good shot with a gun or bow on a target, then if i can shoot it with a camera then i can shoot it with a gun or bow

    thanks agian!

  • Cool.... Never saw this coming, haha Love the video....those sewing machines are nice!!! Tam you are so Good to David, but he is a nice Guy,,, - Andy

  • Hi Mike,

I'm considering selling them as we all enjoyed the process from beginning to end. It's work but rewarding work.

A pouch that size will run about $15 + postal charges.
