This movie reminds me of "the Last Supper" which is essentially a discussion movie focused around a story. Sounds interesting though, good conversation starter for sure.
Immortality has been used so often in so many stories that I think it's safe to say that virtually every single thing that can be said about it has already been said.
As for my personal view, it can be summed up thusly:
Something we would want to have, but that we'd hate once we have it.
@TheJboy88 Sounds like sour grapes. I wouldn't mind giving immortality a try, --all the stuff I'd ever want to do I just can't do in a single lifetime! And I could always kill myself if I got sick of it...
It occurs to me that this is sort of a Doctor Who issue, Oldman doesn't have a TaRDiS, but he has the occasional companion, and then just watches and moves on.
The review is good, but the movie could have done without its main character claiming to have been Christ. I mean dude, you want to explore the notion of living for centuries while everyone around you dies, fine, but that was unnecessary baggage.
@Iamnotaparakeet Unnecessary? That was a huge part of the story. It shows how unintended consequences can arise from the best of intentions. It explains why he doesn't try to interfere even subtly with people, why he stands on the sidelines instead of really trying to make a difference in the world. And it provides an interesting theological discussion, as well as some great character moments. Why would you want to remove that from the movie?
@GeneralBolas It is unnecessary baggage. There is no necessity for a supercentinarian to claim to have been Jesus Christ, but it is superfluous and made part of the story by force. It could have gone in a myriad of directions and still have been fine, but by doing that not only is it unnecessarily blasphemous and offensive, but just plain stupid. It did not have to be a huge part of the story, or a part whatsoever. I'd want to remove that crap so as to be able to share the rest.
@Iamnotaparakeet the likes of you who want to limit others's ability to express them selves artistically simply because it upsets you, have the nerve to lecture me about selfishness
@doctorwhoknows1 You are wrong. I'd like to share this movie with friends. The subject of antediluvian lifespans and otherwise such greater than is currently the norm is of interest to me. Having such crap in the movie detracts too much from the subject matter of interest to be worth sharing. Hence, everything I've already said.
@Iamnotaparakeet there's a big difference between thinking a movie's content is bad and thinking movie's content is immoral, which are you suggesting?
@doctorwhoknows1 It is superfluous to have this supercentinarian claim to be Jesus Christ. It is stupid. It is crap and it adds nothing that couldn't have been done in a less retarded manner. If the goal is considering what life would be like for somebody who has lived so much more than everyone else, such could be done in so many myriad manners without making that particular claim. Consider the show Highlander and the Immortals therein, they have various histories each of them.
@doctorwhoknows1 I actually had a post that contained all the most offensive language I could muster, starting with the N-word and ending with blaming your attitude for 9/11. But I can't do that to not only other people, but even to you.
The point is, unless you have a psychological disorder, there is something you care enough about enough that to sully it would offend you. You only say blasphemy and offense shouldn't matter because it's about something you don't care about.
@trlkly on the handful of times in my life I have been offended by something another person has said, I viewed my offence as my problem and not something I have any right to blame the speaker for
@Iamnotaparakeet That was one of the things I admired about Requiem for Methuselah. Sure, it discounted one of Jesus's miracles, but at least it had the sense to not piss on the religion itself by making a Jesus a liar.
@trlkly I've not seen that TOS episode so I don't quite know exactly what you're referring to with it, but for this movie it basically does go about calling Jesus a liar. It didn't need to even go there. Even the Bible records people living for centuries, both before and for a few generations after the genetic bottleneck of the Flood with lifespans decreasing on a sigmoid curve. This could have been a better movie if they truncated that which was extraneous.
@KatayokoNoTenshi That's why it seemed the only logical choice - besides being the style I was looking for, the fact it is the Lord's Prayer ties into the Jesus aspect, and for Phil meeting his father finally, well, "baba yetu" means "our father" in Swahili. I couldn't have asked for a better fit.
@ndgreenaway a Greek hospital used to employ six gardeners... even thought they had no garden, not only did it do its part to ruin Greece's finances but it also makes me wonder: what is the point?
I stumbled upon this film some timevago and really enjoyed it. Though I was a bit picky at some details, like the jesus part and the doc turning out to be his son. It felt a bit forced.
@therealGLAD would like to see that too, but I was wondering which points would you like to see him talk about?
I find the mess with the forswarn interesting. for one thing, they are upset at the empire for not letting them worship as they wish, and now, the empire is forced to "give up" a god.
@eyallev i also found the forsworn interesting, it shows how hippocritical some of the nords are, complaining about losing the worship of talos whilst invading and taking a native peoples land and forbidig worship of there god. I think it would work best if he mainly stuck to the main story plot, but occasionally went into other areas e.g. forsworn, companions, college of winterhold. hope he gets that arrow out of his knee
@therealGLAD yes, however, it should be pointed out (to anyone who did not play skyrim) that the gods of skyrim are actully real (well, in the game, that is). althought I am yet to find a quest by talos, you do get quests by (some) of the othe gods.
so maybe the nords have a good reason to deny the forsworn gods, maybe they don't exist.
if you think about it, the dark brotherhood, get their missions from their god, so it's not really murder.
@eyallev according to most elder scrolls lore all gods of all races exist, although all are not true gods. In morrowind the nords of solstheim worshipped animal spirits. Also most of the dark brotherhood contracts come from people who pay money, just because sithis is a god doesn't mean he is good, think of what mehrunes dagon did trying to destroy the world.
@therealGLAD well, I never said a god has to be good, the question is, if a god wants/does something, are we in position to pass judgment?
it all boils down to the nature of the gods in skyrim. can they be hurt? can they be made acountable of their actions? do they follow some kind of a guidlne, and is there a way to protest the actions of any of them.
@lordofnightmares Eversince YT sold itself as a whore, my guess would be either VEVO or MGM or any other company that is known by the letters in their name and is pushing for SOPA and such.
Chuck forgot to mention that Jerome Bixby also wrote Mirror, Mirror.
I definitely want to check out this movie being a Highlander fan. It sounds like the movie covers all the tropes about immortality.
