  • Is the software shown in the video Garageband ? or is it a software that comes when u buy the keyboard ?

  • @bigdude1803 The software in the video is Record Reason Duo. After this video was made, Propellerhead released their latest version which is simply called Reason 6. For all the software functionality you see in this video, plus 3 new effects devices and thousands of new sounds and loops, Reason 6 is what you need!

  • As I just mentioned in a couple of responses, part 6 is finally live! How to Record a Song - Part 6: Mixing and Mastering

  • Whe're part 6?!

  • @Carlos2312 Thanks for your comment! Finally completed and uploaded part 6 yesterday! How to Record a Song - Part 6: Mixing and Mastering

  • @Carlos2312 Thanks for that comment and sorry for the wait. Just posted it yesterday. How to Record a Song - Part 6: Mixing and Mastering

  • M-Pain!!

  • LOL at the Satie in the back!

  • really good tutorials u have here. i have one question though: i would like to record just voice over various instrumentals, would it be enough a microphone with a pop filter plus a microphone insulator? cheers

  • @rapasu Yes (not sure what you mean by microphone insulator), as long as you have an audio interface that includes a microphone preamp, and headphones. It's nice to have a pair of powered audio monitors as well.

  • [2] - So, is there a way to lead this pitch changes synchronizing my recorded vocal lines through a midi file which contains another melodie or even some chord voicing? cheers!

  • [1] - Can I set some kind of previous wrote midi file to lead my recorded vocal lines? how could I explain it better...let me see....ok, I can figure it out the, when I'm playing any notes on keyboard actually I'm just sending some kind of pitch information through my signal's chain, but it happens synchronized, at real tempo while I'm playing the vocal track keeps playing.

  • @marleysheredder [1] Yes, you can record a MIDI keyboard performance or import a MIDI file and use that to control the pitch of the vocal track.

[2] Yes, either with a live MIDI keyboard performance, writing in MIDI, or importing MIDI, you can control the pitch of the vocal, or also synthesize background harmonies (chord voicings).

  • @line6movies Thanks a lot for response too much appreciated it n.n This stuff is just amazing!!!

  • No 6th installment?

  • @thecompletejake Sorry - got busy promoting the release of Reason 6 and Balance, and lagged on finishing this series. Working on it! Thanks very much for your interest!

  • @thecompletejake Finally completed and posted part 6 yesterday! How to Record a Song - Part 6: Mixing and Mastering

  • Can you use the UX2 to replace the KB37 when recording vocals, if you don't have keys?

  • @aikeeramz Yes absolutely.

  • I have a question about the pod studio ux2..

can i directly plug my guitar into it and then record? or do i have to use a microphone and all that?

  • @MBvolcom92 Yes, you can plug the guitar in directly. (Either method works.) I show both methods in part 2 of the series: How to Record a Song - Part 2: Recording Guitar and Bass

  • Nice job on this series Matt! This is the 1st time I have actually watched an instructional video on DAW. I have always just 'sorta figured it out'. It looks like I'm not to far off. But I will go back and review the videos on adding percussion and using the midi keyboard, good stuff.

So my question is this. Is all of the software that you used in this series included with the Reason Propellerhead software? It's not inexpensive but if everything is included I could justify to myself its value.

  • @dfranks50 What I used in the video is Reason Record Duo, and yes, everything is included. If you buy Reason Record Duo now, you will get a free upgrade to Reason 6 when it is released October 1. Or if you just wait and purchase Reason 6 on or after October 1, everything you saw in the video will still be included, plus Reason 6 adds even more goodies!

  • What brand of keyboard is that?

  • @KRparodies Hey - sorry for the late response - didn't see this comment. It is a Line 6 KB37. It is a MIDI controller and audio interface.

  • thanks for the video

  • When you're finished with this song. Can I download it? Cause it sounds awesome !!! :D

  • @itsmezan Thanks! :) There is a version of this song available at mattpiper dot bandcamp dot com. It is a different recording, but very similar to the way the version in the video series will sound when it's done. The version on Bandcamp is the version I played for Line 6 when we were planning this video series earlier this year.

  • Bravo!

    Easy as THAT !

  • A very well made and very impressive video !

  • nice video what is the program are you using?

  • @crixismusic Glad you liked the video. The software is Reason Record Duo, made by Propellerhead.

  • Nice tune. Really. Your voice is fine. It would be nice to see a tutorial on more natural pitch correction in lieu of the "effect" pitch correction. I am slowing working with Record more and more for mixing. Thanks!

  • @RichStudio Thanks for the comment and encouragement. I agree that it would be cool to have a video about natural/transparent pitch correction. I hope I will be able to get to that some time after Reason 6 comes out.

  • You voice sounds a little like Bowie, I like it :D

  • @Jonathankun Thanks Jonathankun! :)

  • I like the song you got going. :) Great video, thanks!

  • the pitch correction sounds like daft punk, can u make it sound natural?

  • @Elfavzla Yes. I didn't call it out in the video, but if you look closely you'll see me turn the Correction Speed knob all the way up on Neptune. That is what gives the artificial sound, especially on the 1st section of vocals. On the 2nd section, I am also re-pitching the notes well above (sometimes over an octave above) the actual note I'd sung, which will sound artificial. "Normal" pitch correction (about 1/2 step up or down) with the Correction Speed set a bit slower will sound natural.

  • pretty good video, didnt know those tricks for vocals! :D really usefull, thank you!! i really hope that after this series you continue posting videos like this (recording tips and those kind of things) ! :)

  • This is my favorite video of the series so far! Thanks for jumping in with the vocals yourself instead of bringing in a pro singer (not that there's ANYTHING wrong with pro singers!). You actually have a nice voice before and after "correction". I'm a big fan of the robo-voice effect particularly for this type of music. My favorite part of the video is the stuff you did with the keyboard. That's awesome! Looking forward to trying that myself. Keep up the great work w/ the vids!

  • Cool.

  • Nice video

    THanks

    DJ Mikey MIke

  • Pitch correction, not T-pain emulation. As far as a "how-to" video this is a fail.

  • Fair enough Talonz59. For a more natural sound, I would turn the Correction Speed knob down - I had it at the fastest setting, which gives the T-Pain sound. Also my pitch was shaky in the beginning of the track which caused Neptune to (just for a split second) hit a couple of notes that weren't in the written melody. I could fix that either by playing the notes in with a keyboard or by automating the scale that Neptune is correcting to (temporarily removing notes as needed).

  • wow you have a nice voice!

    I really mean it!

  • @wolfman109h Thanks! :-)

  • I hope the profits from this will be going towards having everyone in Rebecca Black's family sterilized, especially Rebecca Black.

  • great video!

  • if someone in a band situation couldn't hit the pitch then they wouldn't be in the band auto tune sounds terrible sounds like a robot. no vocal dynamics what so ever

  • @guitaristman23 Although in this video I have used the effect in a very heavy-handed way, it is possible to use pitch correction in a subtle manner, gently fixing a problem here or there while leaving the majority of the vocal untouched. Even a great singer might miss one note during the course of a 3-minute performance, and done correctly, the listener might not even detect the correction. I feel where you are coming from though. My favorite vocal harmonies are by Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young!
