Expert Village Idiots...the bridge is on backwards, maybe flip that around before you start. How many bogus videos does expertvillage have out there anyway? Seems that everytime I do a search for something specific, I end up clicking one of these by mistake...because I wouldn't click on ANYTHING from expertvillage intentionally. Every one of them has been a total waste of time, and contained incorrect information besides. I wish youtube would ban them altogether.
@Sweeper5 Not necessarily, The screws can face the neck or the tailpeice, it depends on which way the saddles sit, which they are sitting in the right direction so this bridge is on correctly.
@mojorisen74 You think? Does the E and A string saddles look like they're facing the right way to you? What I'm thinking is that one of these guys (who didn't know what he was doing) took this bridge apart, re-assembled it wrong (bridge saddles all wacky), and dropped it on the elevator studs. Backwards. Maybe I'm wrong...but I have some pretty killer guitars, and none of them were set up like this.
@Sweeper5 It wasn't uncommon for some of the older Gibson tune-o-matic's to have the E & A Saddles backward. They did this because to properly intonate those strings you had to have enough clearance at the bottom of the bridge for the saddle to sit.
@mojorisen74 OK, if you say so bro. None of my guitars are like that. Not my LP, not my old LP from back in the day, and not my T.C.McInturff. On another note, I see you work for the usps. Me too man. Kind of stressful days, aren't they. :-) At least in my neck of the woods. Those guys are beginning to scare me...never know what craziness they'll implement next. Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread, but had to throw that in.
why has he changed the p90s to humbuckers, if your gonna have a 1956 gold top les paul and change the p90s to humbuckers you may as well get a lp standard
The reason why the videos are all split up is because it makes it easier for people to see the part they want to see, IMO. But then again, if it was all in one video, it would be better cause you could just list specific times/points in the video where everything is. Heh.
@tidussloan321 Just take a wirecutting pliers and put a 90 degree bend in them
and cut them off (beyond the bend). If they're wound on the posts right there's no harm in that and no reason to have that loop up there...extra string is just a headstock scratch waiting to happen.
Then don't forget to stretch the strings in until they don't go flat anymore, this makes them tight around the posts and seats them well at the bridge end too.
You don't need more than three wraps or so on a post.
@kerranz I have a Michael kelly patriot special guitar with only one saddle and two studs in one unit. When I lower the studs, I Notice the saddle moves back. Is this bad thing? or does it have to be clamped into the two studs fully?
The two big posts that screw into the body will raise or lower the bridge. The 2 smaller screws facing the tail of the gtr adjust the string length from nut to bridge. Set your height first, then screw the small screws in or out to set the intonation, and you will need a tuner with an oscilloscope to see when the E strings are correct. These bridges don't allow fine tuning of the four strings in between. But you can replace it with one that does. Good Luck!
Hey Man, thanks for the tutorial. I just got into re-stringing my Les Paul and opened a can of worms. Nothing I cant handle but it's nice to have these vids for some guidance.
i suck with guitars. i pick one up. i literitly break it cause i am so bad XD should be learning bass but what i want to know is that switch. ace frehley uses it to make a sound afect its like a on and off switch what is that called?
Ya it's a kill switch.. I don't see the need when if you play on, Bridge pickup lets say of a Les Paul (or a dual PU guitar with 2 volumes), set the neck PU to 0 volume and switch to that.... But anyway.
Yes, that will work, but if you need to switch between to tones say bridge and neck position in a hurry as the song may call for it your in a bind. Some players I've seen use a pedal kill switch but the one on the guitar works great, ala Buckethead.
is there a difference in setting the neck up with bolt and set, is it called the action? what does it mean if the neck curves, the middle of neck is lower than top and bottom, like a shallow c shape? thx hope you can help
Well, I know there needs to be adjustment so that the strings do not touch the back part of the bridge. Supposedly,if they touch it will affect the sustain of the instrument. So the adjustment is made to just clear the bridge. My question is will raising the tailpiece higher give the strings less tension for easier bends? I've never found a satisfactory answer to this.
Sorry for the late reply here. The issue of the strings touching the bridge causing sustain issues is really not proven. At that point the string is not "speaking" at all, so the effect on sustain, if any at all, is minimal. With older Les Paul bridges that have only a spindle into the wood, if there was too much tension it may bend down or collapse- that is why people raised the tailpieces.
Raising the tailpiece has resulted in many opinions on tone and tension. Some say they notice little difference. I did notice easier bends with a raised tailpiece- but reduced sustain, because the tail is not scrwed all the way down into the wood. Really its personal preference.
@necrojerky There's one real reason to raise or lower the tailpiece, to make sure the strings do not touch the bridge's body...they should sit on the saddles ONLY. If they impact the main housing it will suck tone in a big way. Some claim having the TP all the way down is best for sustain, but having it high enough for strings to clear the back of the bridge will make overall string response much livelier. Gibson's head custom shop luthier told me this and I have proven it via experiment.
this video sucked, so where is the setup?

are you talking about the pickup selector?
If you have one pickup (say the neck) volume all the way down you can make this effect by switching back and forth.

ya! i think thats it. its like an on and off switch

Should the stop tailpiece be adjusted? If so what is the proper adjustment? Does adjusting the stop affect the tension of the strings?
franklmac 3 years ago
In my personal experience, the tailpiece never needs to be moved as it only holds the strings on the guitar and nothing else.
If anyone has a good reason to "adjust" one I would love to hear it but I really can't imagine ever having to move it.
