This movie is too perfect, you know, portraying such a strong mature bond, but the novel is kinda more realistic. The main character is portrayed as a less lively, lost boy, and the soldier - as a not quite responsible for his action young man. There're no really warm feelings between them, and sometimes it seems that they don't have anything to share.
Yet I din't think the book will be the waste of your time. It is more realistic and detailed in descriptions.

Just because a kid is "in love" with the adult does not make it acceptable or right to have sex with the kid whether or not the kid consents to it.
That being said, I actually really found the movie to be told in a very honest manner and not in any way promoting nor demonizing the relationship and I respect that. Stories should be told honestly no matter what the subject matter is about.
as much as we all enjoy the story and the beauty of the autobiographical film we should not forget the fact that Walt neglected to have the courage to inform poor Jeuron of his leaving. as an adult he knew full well his actions and their consequences. Walt knew that Jeuron was attached, that he loved him, and after claiming to care for him in the end he proved himself uncaring and almost like an antagonist. it's not even a breakup, just abondement without any closer.
I love the pairing of this song with this movie !! This movie just gets me every time I get reminded of it - it's about lost youth as much as anything. Many won't understand it, but that doesn't make it any less special for those of us who do.

While the incorporation of ballet in this film was rather weak in my opinion, the journey of the boy's life was great. A movie for the open-minded and progressive, but not so much for a conservative, again, in my opinion.

Finally watched the whole film tonight. The subject matter is difficult. An adult taking advantage of a child this way is just wrong. However the love of the boy for the soldier seems so touching in the way it's presented.I was not much older than this boy when I experienced a similar "romance" for over a year. Came home from camp to find he moved away, and never heard from him again. This movie should remind us that the heart of a child is precious and should be treated with care and respect.

The book was originally calles 'voor een verloren soldaat' It's in dutch though I believe it's been translated into english as 'for a lost soldier'. I'm not sure though, I read it in dutch so yeah XD He was very young, but it's autobiographical, so the writer really would've been that young.

Just finished reading the book. I found it difficult to get into the style in which it's written. I don't know if any of the real context of the events have been lost in the translation from its original Dutch to the English edition. But it's an amazing read, I just couldn't put down. It's a sweet & innocent retelling of a 12 year old boys first sexual experiences. The confusion , fear and at times curiosity, he experiences towards this soldier in his early 20's (I think) was confronting.
Complaining that the movie didn't follow the book is not a valid criticism. The book and the movie are two completely separate entities each to be judged on their own merits.
i finally saw this movie and was really touched.. it took me back to when I was 12 and we lived a couple miles from a navy base. My mother worked on the base and during Christmas and Thanksgiving she would always invite a group of the sailor to our house for the holiday. On one of those occasions i met Marc who was 19 and we had a relationship for about years. Even after he transferred to another base he'd keep in touch and fly in when he could. I thought i was in heaven being an only child...
It was the only male-male relationship I would ever experience, but I have very fond memories of Marc and that time in my life when youth was a virtue and full of innocense. Oh and yes we had sex, he taught me all about sex and love and when i finally met a girl that I loved i was able to take the love that he taught me and transfer it over to her and we're still married today...

You say 'I thought I was in heaven' and others have said although very young they remember the relationship with a man as being wonderful. i finally saw this movie and was really touched.. it took me back to when I was 12 and we lived a couple miles from a navy base. My mother worked on the base and during Christmas and Thanksgiving she would always invite a group of the sailor to our house for the holiday. On one of those occasions i met Marc who was 19 and we had a relationship for about years. Even after he transferred to another base he'd keep in touch and fly in when he could. I thought i was in heaven being an only child...

It was the only male-male relationship I would ever experience, but I have very fond memories of Marc and that time in my life when youth was a virtue and full of innocense. Oh and yes we had sex, he taught me all about sex and love and when i finally met a girl that I loved i was able to take the love that he taught me and transfer it over to her and we're still married today...

@mystkpizza I have read through all the comments on this film and yours is the closest experience to the Dutch original. You say 'I thought I was in heaven' and others have said although very young they remember the relationship with a man as being wonderful. However if the soldier had been found out he would have gone to prison despite whatever the boy felt or pleaded about love. We have to respect the laws that protect children whatever the heart feels.

I don't know how old the actors are, but according to wikipedia the characters are 12 and early 20s. I don't know of any 12 year olds that are able to make a decision about sex. the whole thing really bothers me.
