People stop confusing Red with Ash. They are completely different. Red is the character for the manga and Ash for the anime. Is true that they are very alike but their personalities are very different and probably Red is much better than Ash. Red pokemons are really powerful and most of them (dont' really know if all) are in the last evolution.

They're modeled off of each other, but in the Pokemon Manga they're completely different people. (Red is much more of a badass)

Red is Ash's cross-canon counterpart. They are based on eachother but are not the exact same people.

You start with collecting 8 badges in the Johto region, fight the elite four, and then travel to the Kanto region to win the 8 badges there. After collecting all 16 badges you can enter Mt. Silver and challenge Red for grand champion title. Well, this is what you did in the original games, but I don't think these remakes are too much different, plotwise.
