I love love love this performance!!!!!!! I remember watching this on TV with my friends and we all went crazy and bowed in front of the TV!!! After seeing this I would channel Patti at every pageant I did..... It won me many titles. Lover man was the living END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting!!!
i cannot say nothing at all, Pattie is never vocally challenged and when done so she is here still, whar more can i say, she is well more then the queen of vocals
This was my turn around song and the year was 1985, I heard this and got a new attitude about myself and the life that given to me. I never looked back! I kicked depression in the ass and said never again, this butterfly must spread her wings now. My wings are still on high 2011!
please not no one today or even in Pattie's prime or past can compete with her vocals. she is the queen of VOCALS, ROCK N SOUL. never beat. not even today
Put Beyonce, Christina Aguilera or some of todays other singers next to her - their career would be over immediately. She´s got pure passion for singing and performing!
Thanks Wendy Alec for your prayers- I wouldn't have made it through the night successfully without you. If you are in London, you really stayed up late with Crazy Kenny- again- thanks for your prayers- I will be ok for the rest of the evening.
Meesh's album is a failure not because she can't sing for she has a professional voice that one day will rise to the top of her game but this album fails for one reason- it promotes the hatred of Crazy Kenny in the same way that other songs promote the same hatred- this hatred is contagious- and is currently spreading like a cancer with no end in sight and its motivations come straight from the pitt of hell from they encourage others to hate Crazy Kenny & have lost their soul to a death spirit
The second performers decide to hate someone they go from being classy to trashy. So when Meesh went to hating Crazy Kenny along with Eminem as others- they too went from classy to trashy. The lesson I am trying to give performers is to be like Patti Labelle- be classy. Don't hate a person or group of people for any reason for Music is a voice of God and God is love and music does heal others in its own way but when we hate it has the opposite effect- it encourages more hatred.
One of the keys to being a classy performer like Patti Labelle is to love everyone and hate no one- something this younger generation has lost somewhere down the line and in doing so has lost their own soul. Music is a voice God and God is love so whenever musicians hate and not love they lose their soul and set a poor example for their own generation.
One of the keys to being a classy performer like Patti Labellle is love everyone and hate none- something this younger generation has lost somewhere down the line and in doing so has lost their own soul.
Now I love me some Miss Patti, but version of Lover Man was so waaaaaaaaaay over over over over the top. Would love her to do this in concert again soon.
I would show up at a Patti Labelle concert if you was wheelchair bound, thats how much I dug this chick. In 1985, I wasnt evedn into RB/Soul. I was more into heavy metal and new wave. But I LOVED Patti Labelle, because she was brassy...couls sing anyone, woman or man, under the table..and she was LOUD AS SHIT!!...My opinion is this, if you're gonna sing to people in some of the stadiums and concert halls that she sings in, you need to be LOUD. Homegirl, kills me everytime I see her.
Ohhh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats what Im talking about! None! And I mean none of these so called "singers" of today can beat that or even come close to that kind of presence! Everytime I hear the radio I get frustrated cause its junk. But then I remember there are living legends like Patti and other singers that have left their greatness behind. Go ahead Patti!!!!!!!!!!!
funny you used the word trumpet because there was a clip on here singing i've got rhythm with tony bennett, and she literally sang like a trumpet. as if she wasn't vocalizing? but just too on the sound of an instrument. it was mind blowing-just like this performance.
I remember an interview that Grace Jones gave about 20 yrs ago. I was on a vacation, in Paris for the first time and Grace was a guest on a local tv show there...she was asked which singers in the States, "impressed" her and I'll never forget her saying "Living?...Patti Labelle....Dead?...Billie Holliday". And she went on to say that everytime Patti sang, "the Earth trembled a little bit. She sounds "too good to be true". Watch closely because there will never be one like her again.
This is without a shadow of doubt the most scariest vocal I have ever heard Patti do...! She is definitely number ONE! No other can touch her vocally! What on earth was she on during Loverman! I'm mesmerised!
Haha, I guess "scary" is just the right word to describe it. Being a major Patti Labelle fanatic since 1985 (Live Aid), I agree that (untill now) I never witnessed anything from ms. Patti that was more than scary. I just love her, love, love her:-). YouTube should have been there way back before the 80's. Nevertheless, thanks so much for posting and giving comments. Wow, all these emotions, hard to cope & deal with. She's just one of God's best ways to show His Presence on earth! Bye from Sander
You're right, pure classic Patti. I videotaped this performance when I was a kid and watched it over and over...and over again. After careful study, I think she said, "I gotta fix my dress, so I don't make a mess..." Regardless of what the words were, only she would have and could have been bold enough to utter them during a live, televised performance. Priceless!
these were the days when she could do absolutely ANYTHING she wanted with those pipes. It was kinda scarey because everytime you saw her on shows like this, you just never knew what she was gonna do with those notes, and you were never ready for how LOUD she was going to be. It could be said that Aretha ruled the 60's and Donna Summer stole the 70's, but Patti had no peer in the 80's ON STAGE. She didnt sell all the records in the 80's like Houston but on stage, NO ONE could touch her..NO ONE.
i posted the above an hour ago, i'm still watching this. i cannot believe someone on earth can do this. someone explain it to me cause I just don't get it. and i'm seeing/hearing it/looking right at it.
You know you one hell of a singa when you got folks praising God and you not even singing a song about him lol. That's because God's light shines through those who uses his gift to the best of their ability and then some, and that's Patti all day whether she is in good voice/bad voice/little voice/big voice.
Keep in mind that Patti would have been 41 years old here in 1985! The diva's of today peak at 22, then drugs, then nervous breakdown, then a weak ass voice that isn't 60% of volume.... Ms. Labelle has been kicking ass for 40+ years, and today at age 64, she can still blow just about everyone off the stage. Todays Whitney & Mariah would get blown off the stage even by todays Patti....If either were to attempt a duet with the Patti of 1985, it would be career ending.
I like all the singers mentioned, but Patti is a vocal dragon! If anyone is in a league of their own it is surely Patti Labelle - she's much more than a singer.
ScottCLimaTeacher, you ain't never lied! LOL! I mean, I love Whitney and Mariah as the next person, but it amazes me that they reached their peak going in their 30s as vocalist while Patti LaBelle was at her ultimate power at 40 (though Aretha's voice in the 80s changed drastically from what it was in the 60s and 70s she was still incredible at that time, too). I don't know what's up with the new divas, but they seem to hit a peak quicker than the ones from the old school.
If it wasnt for the person putting up this video we would never have seen this. type what you want pokie82 and be as self indulgent as you want. thanks for this masterpiece! and post more
In future please STOP typing words all over the video. IF you are a big Patti fan you will know this is not only distracting, but self-indulgent! She sounds and looks AMAZING!
one of the most powerful voices i have ever heard in my life. who can really lie there on their back and still be able to produce the type of vocals that she does.....
LOL...She makes me crazy from 7:44-7:53! Chills just ran all through my body like I was in church! MY GOD PATTI! ALL HAIL TO ONE OF THE PREMIERE VOCALISTS OF OUR TIME!
Pokie82, I love Patti=Patti, but your comments put this video over the edge. I've got to pick myslef up from under my computer desk! Thank you so much for posting this.
Fabulous, FABULOUS performance...truly awesome to behold Patti tackling an old jazz standard, and with a *KILLER* big band arrangement, at that. That was........epic. But those subtitles were SERIOUSLY annoying and started to piss me off a lot.
This performance was from the black globe awards. I had this on vhs and lost it years ago. I thought i would never see this performance again. Thanks to the person who posted it.
