soul is NO MORE "universal" than Country or a asian singing reggae. They have copied us from the very beginning. So what really is he doing? Copying US? And the BAD place is we are so Soul staved that we accept ANYONE and cant see a Guy trying to IMMITATE us. But that is NO MORE SOUL than RKelly trying to imitate Garth Brooks with a country accent. What are you talking about!? This guy rarely sings a song that sounds like the original. he always puts his own spin on it. He has so much talent so much range and amazing pitch that he is an incredible singer. I think that he could sing any type of music and sound amazing. Soul/pop is his choice because he feels his music, he lives his music. NO musicians do that today.

While I agree he needs to start interpreting lyrics a bit more in his style. . . his voice is beyond incredible. Its a truly God given instrument. I feel he really FEELS and loves music too. I am sure when he gets in the studio, he will learn to channel the vocal gymnastics into more nuanced magic. Still I am amazed!
