Well the crumple zone is not quite as large as in e.g. sedans. That means the passenger of the smart is slowed down more rapidly. This effect is intensified when the smart collides with a far heavier vehicle. the smarts cabin will likely stay intact, but because of lower kinetic energy it will rebounce more than the heavier vehicle, and that makes the decelleration more sudden and therefore more dangerous. If the cabin stays intact but the g-forces of the impact kill you, you didn't gain much.
You're right, but it is well kwown that the g-forces in any kind of vehicle, can produce death instantly. Also there is a test here in youtube where a fortwo crashes with a mercedes (I don't remember the model) that doubles the size and weight of an smart, the cabin stayed intact... but yes you are right in terms of kinetic energies. Finallly it is rarely possible to crash front to front with another car, in fact the smart uses the crumple zones of the other cars as an advantage
the mercedes of the other video was an S-Class i believe. said to be the safest car in the world, those mercedes are tanks i tell you. the only thing im worried about with the smart fortwo is the rolling factor, its supposed to have technology to land you upright after 2 complete rolls... 2 rolls is a lonngg way to go though. =[
