machida is a great counter PUNCHER, but he had never been put up against a high level guy who can kick as well as Rua. the whole first fight was key in rua being able to knockout machida in the 2nd fight, because machida was so wary of countering punches in the first fight that he left the leg kicks open. in the 2nd fight lyoto was ready for the leg kicks, which let shogun set up the deadly overhand right with either the feint knee or kick. rua making machida fear his kicks was key 4 the KO

But that is the state of MMA today thanks to the UFC, closed competition, so fighters are limited to facing other fighters in their promotion. when a weight class is weak, they rarely see strong opponents.
Define vast experience...experience outside of the UFC? Most fighters don't make their mma debut in the UFC (cept if you're lesnar or Toney). UFC is where most fighters want to go.
Middleweight is a weak division, Light-heavyweight is one the strongest and most dynamic classes in UFC.

With the sprawl you can stay in Rua's normal fighting stance, with Machida you have to use his style which will keep you from using Shoguns offense. You have to pick what you like more and go with what will blend with it, not what will conflict with it.

A.) If you ever look for Mauricio to lose to anyone, you're being foolish. They didn't pull his name out of a hat. He's there for a reason.
B.) Karate is not Jesus. Even though Lyoto is sick with it and has whomped many a competitor, his style *gasp* has holes in it. Shogun is merely the first to be able to find and exploit them to success.

machida is a great counter PUNCHER, but he had never been put up against a high level guy who can kick as well as Rua. the whole first fight was key in rua being able to knockout machida in the 2nd fight, because machida was so wary of countering punches in the first fight that he left the leg kicks open. in the 2nd fight lyoto was ready for the leg kicks, which let shogun set up the deadly overhand right with either the feint knee or kick. rua making machida fear his kicks was key 4 the KO

We already know that Shoguns offensive skills works against top ranked fighters of many styles.
Also, good luck trying to combine Lyoto's defense with Shoguns offensive because in order to defend like him you cant attack like the other because of the stance being used.

With the sprawl you can stay in Rua's normal fighting stance, with Machida you have to use his style which will keep you from using Shoguns offense. You have to pick what you like more and go with what will blend with it, not what will conflict with it.

@49swinger49 you dont have to count it as a win, but it's definitely worthy of a good fight (at the very least). the fight went 5 rounds and both fighters could probably go even further. shogun is a powerful fighter, and he would probably destroy lesnar 10x faster than lyoto. i think the fight was great, and it was a lot closer than people give it credit for. too bad its overshadowed by the upset. these are two really great fighters.

@49swinger49 dont count it as a win if you dont want to, but at least count it as a good fight against shogun. it was 5 rounds, the fight was close, and both fighters could've gone for another couple of rounds. that's definitely something you have to give lyoto credit for. i think the fight was closer than people give it credit for, it was overshadowed by the upset. besides, who else can go against shogun like that? not many.

@Xytos Thats exactly what I say. I think it was one of the best, and closest, title fight that I have ever seen. And I believe that Lyoto can give anybody in the light-heavyweight devision a hell of a fight. I just think that Shogun's style gives Machida's problems. If Rampage can get back to the way he used to be he might be able to rough Lyoto up a little bit also. Honestly I don't see that happening but who knows? It's MMA, anything could happen.

Yet no one gave him the second round which is where he landed most punches (even if some of them was from the clinch)

Some weird hit conculator was used on Sherdog or something. i'm sure it's not hard to find. probably can just google "Machida Rua clean hits" or something. But yeah, as far as I know, and from what I saw, Rua was more aggressive, and certainly won.

Look at the GSP vs Dan Hardy fight; everyone knows that GSP mainly uses ground game to control his opponents, yet Hardy was unable to stop the takedowns. Knowing your opponent's strengths and being able to actually neutralize them are two different things. We'll see in the rematch who learned the most from their previous fight.
