The production company for Hype! asked the club to get in as many people possible for the gig for filming purposes, so the booking people at the club spread a rumor that Soundgarden was supposed to play. By the time Blood Circus got up, the throng was drunk, and so pissed off that Chris Cornell & Co. had not been seen, or let alone taking to the stage, they started throwing beer bottles.  Blood Circus was, needless to say, agitated, hence the tense performance. The rest is film history.
