the songwriting of Albert Bouchard was missed after he was given the boot. Still my favorite band, though. Check out Blue Coupe if you get the chance, you won't be disappointed.
when this song came out i was 15. a young kid at the restaurant i worked at turned me on to some enchanted evening and i've been hooked ever since. classic ballad. great musicianship. that's what's missing in music today. i'm stuck in the 70's through the early 90's. thanks for posting this version. brilliant.
I was fortunate to be a teenager when this fantastic song was produced. A friend of mine's parents bought a used car and a cassette tape of the "Secret Treaties" album was accidentally left in the tape player. "What's this?" we asked as we drove around in the car. Then we played it... about a million times! Those were the days!
i must have listened to this a 1000 times and im still listening to it to this day simply the greatest peice of music ever!!!buck is a fucking guitar wizard man....
Thanks for posting and kudos on the quality. BOC came to Ipswich a couple of years ago, but despite me and another guy in the next row yelling ourselves hoarse for this they never played it! However, we did get an astounding extended version of 'Then Came The Last Days Of May', which almost made up for it. Almost...
Thank you so much for posting this, my favorite too, it puts the studio track to shame and is one of the best live recordings of all time I think. Flawless execution on top of a really good quality recording. Simply stunning
As many have said, this is THE version of this song. I've been listening to the song and album/cassette/CD since it came out. The second half instrumental still gives me the chills. IMO, this band was way under rated.
The first version of this I heared was Metallica's cover of the song so hearing the original was kind of weird because of the power that they put into their version and this one is way more timid..until that solo at the end that was great.
@THRASHFKINFILLETS I like most of those too! Love the 1970s and some of the 80s and late-60s. Music back then showed creativeness, rather than being written to some boring formula. My humble opinion, but you won't see any modern stuff in my cd collection. All those girl singers sound the same. Rock to the 70s!
This is one of the greatest songs ever. I like Metallica but they didn't do it justice. Buck can outplay any member of metallica. They said it themselves
@TheFairestMaiden This IS awesome. I've just bought this cd, plus Agents Of Fortune which I had as a cassette years ago. The 1970s is the best era of music by far. Nothing can match an era that had Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Free, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Wishbone Ash, Mountain, Rainbow, Bad Company etc. Saw a survey recently of the 100 best songs of all time - I realise surveys are subjective - but this one had over 60% of the songs from the 1970s!!!
@myrtic1 Thanks. But his music was being played and listened to throughout the 1970s. I like a lot of the 1960s too, particularly late-1960s. Cheers, mate!
I saw them at the Agora Ballroom in West Hartford CT many years ago. When they played clubs back then they played under the stage name Soft White Underbelly . . . awesome show.
This was my first BOC album. And when I saw them live, they absolutely lived up to the expectations created by this album. I've seen a handful of very note-worthy bands, but BOC was the BEST LIVE BAND.
BOC seizes the considerable challenge of performing this Sandy Pearlman inspired Masterpiece in the "Live" forum & delivers with this unparalleled consummation. Eric's simmering vocals, the alternate tempo & arrangement intensify the song's cryptic/elusive message. Buck's guitar then takes on this deeply emotional & personal lament . His solo may be one of the finest ever played. Tastefully executed, soaring phrases of pensive contemplation; bonding seamlessly with the song's melancholic fable.
There was a brief time in the history of Rock n' Roll through the 1970's when "Live" performances were expected to be expansive, intense & more ambitious song renditions of the studio versions. The best artists thrilled fans by giving them well played concerts that could also be experienced through quality live LP's of integrity that had minimal overdubs. "Some Enchanted Evening" by BOC is an integral example of this era. Superior musicians in their element, demonstrating top drawer chemistry.
@icketypickety In the late 70's and early 80's they were very famous. They sold out South Floria every time they came to town. In 1978 they played at the Sportatorium in Hollywood Florida (sold out) and Bebop Deluxe opened. The crowd didn't even come inside to watch them they wanted BOC. During Godzilla the drummer put on Godzilla mask and jammed. In 1981 they played with Heart at the Miami Baseball Stadium and again BOC stole the show. These guy's were awesome live.
It was amazing to see this stuff live. BOC,Rush,Zep,Yes,Floyd they put on shows that were to be remembered. Screw Rap. Screw MTV, Screw American idol, sscrew 3 min songs. As far as the sexy songbird type, if i want to watch porn I will--don't need some sucky voice stripper making records
I love this song!!I really can't get enough of the jamming that starts at 4:25 on!!Ive seen these guy 9 times and never have I seen this song live before:-(I really hope they start playing this song again,Its up there with Don't fear the reaper and Godzilla,it should be a must play at every show as well!!!!
metgpks---Yes this was probably one the Cult's greatest. Unfortunately Eric's pipes are a mere shadow of what they once were. Perhaps one reason why it is no longer performed all that much. Very sad indeed because ever since 1974, this done in concert always took me to the cosmos. Wish there was a video to this version. The "Live 1976" was excellent video-wise, but the audio is beyond terrible, but will give you an idea of their 70's greatness.
@sludgalicious Well you have about a year on me but I agree whole heartedly. With Comfortably Numb and SWTH (Stairway..)running neck and neck. I can't remember how many notebooks I put BOCs logo on :)
The first BOC album I ever bought was Some Enchanted Evening. I didn't know much about their music but my friends like 'em and the cover was pretty cool. What great suprise. To this day one of my favorite albums (yeah I know) and versions of this song. Astronomy from SEE, to me, captures the true sound of Blue Oyster Cult.
I saw them in 82 on the ETL live tour with Aldo Nova in Harrisburg PA..one of the best shows ever! Was general admission and I was in the first 5 rows of weed smokers, potheads, and cult lovers at age 151
I'm a fan. I had the Chonos painted on the trim of archway between my living room and dining/stereo room of my apartment. My best friend Brian painted it on for me. It was black on white. Wish I still had some pictures of it. That was done in 1974.
@Gaffhart77 Iron Maiden ripped the idea of putting a hidden(sometimes better than others) symbol(B.O.C- Chronos), (Maiden- ?masonic?) on every album... B.O.C. did it first !!! X)
@sirlovemehard I believe you're talking about the Iron Maiden album cover artist's insignia. (it's a D and R back to back) Derek Riggs has said in interviews that, to make sure his signature got onto the cover, he hid it in the picture instead of putting it at the edge where it is more likely to be cropped off at the printers.
i gained a shit ton of respect for Buck Dharma because of this solo. the fact that he played it live and improved upon his studio version, still blows me away . i like to listen to the secret treaties version then the some enchanted evening right after. to get the proper perspective. he is truly amazing , right up there with schenker
Saw em live in 81 I think ... "fire of unknown origin" tour with ted nugent and heart ... they are so freaken incredible live! After growing up on listening to their albums...especially "some enchanted evening"... Atlanta Georga are you ready to rock and roll..............!!!!
Long before Metallica covered it, this song was deserving of a larger audience. The version on Secret Treaties is a classic, this version, with the extended, epic guitar solo is truly incredible. I play guitar, before the internet had guitar TABS, I spent countless hours playing along with the CD trying to figure out the outro solo, once I did, I still played along with it again and again...Can other guitarists relate? Is there a video to this version from Some Enchanted Evening?
I remember being in 9th grade (and beyond!) trying to figure this out off the ALBUM. I would usually end up going to Godzilla because I could nail that song.
Glad to see that SEE is finally getting up on YT. Thanks. This is the Cult album I cut my teeth on. It is perfect except it's not a double and doesn't cover enough BOC tunes that should have been (like Dominance, Stairway and Teen Archer). And while most any version of Astronomy is fantastic, the song, and the solo, soar to unprecendented heights on this album. Sometimes I listen to the solo repeatedly, not just because I love it, but to see if I really heard what I thought I just heard.
RoeserFan: try and find "On Your Feet, Or On Your Knees", an earlier BOC live album for smoking great performances of those songs you mention, plus others. I think it was a double but I can't quite recall for some odd reason. (way too much drugs).
the songwriting of Albert Bouchard was missed after he was given the boot. Still my favorite band, though. Check out Blue Coupe if you get the chance, you won't be disappointed.

what's a Chronos? Is that the BOC logo?
mja2035 2 years ago

An incredible live performance. I guess this version became the basis for their 1994 re-recording on Cult Classic.

BOC is one of those bands that excels at pretty much everything it does.

Oh Yeah!!!!

Yeah, I was kinda surprised this wasn't on here before. I wanted a friend of mine to hear it, so I just decided to upload it myself.
This was my first Blue Oyster Cult album, too, and for a long time, this was the only version of Astronomy I'd ever heard :)

RoeserFan: try and find "On Your Feet, Or On Your Knees", an earlier BOC live album for smoking great performances of those songs you mention, plus others. I think it was a double but I can't quite recall for some odd reason. (way too much drugs).

Destinova: yes, OYFOOYK is a double. I've had it for 32 years! It's unspeakably great!
