I apologize if anyone is from any of these states or happen to love these states, as I don't mean any offense to anyone, but I'm actually fine with Texas seceding. Anti-secessionists clearly believe that, since a state once (decades or centuries ago) joined the union, the people within that state are forever bound to, or imprisoned by, that union regardless of their views or the actions of that union. What kind of democracy or freedom is that?
Idiots even throw around the word "treason" without knowing it's meaning. The idea of secession is to leave the union, not undermine or subvert it. Only latter two fit the definition of that in this context.
You can survive on vegetables and fish but not on a diet of beef and corn alone.
If Texas secedes, tax the crap out of vegetable exports to Texas; the rest of the country can live without beef. California, Oklhoma and Kansas will be richer to boot too.
Are you kidding? More than half the vegetables consumed in this country are already imported from overseas, not grown in California. Beef is also now mostly imported. Little of that will change (for any of the states) if Texas secedes. Of course, both Texas and California are wealthy enough to afford those imports. Texas may even gain considerably by losing it's share of the national debt.
Joking aside, I'm all for Texan secession; it will solve a lot of problems.
One of the major issues I do for-see though is the Union putting pressure on Mexico and Canada to discontinue importing goods from Texas. And considering these imports make up 34.4% and 8.4% respectively, this will hurt Texas pretty badly.
Actually, if Texas were to secede, a good number of other states (many of the so-called "red states") would likely secede as well, for similar reasons. In fact, further loss of political influence would virtually assure their secession. A union of those states would find plenty of nations willing to import and export goods. The end result would be two unions with vastly different political and social views, with substantially different cultures as well. Nothing wrong with that.
@stewartx5 I agree about other states joining in, with Alabama being Texas' strongest ally. I think that potentially N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and possibly Florida could seceed. You can count out Louisiana (too Catholic). The big question is, are all of these states going to be run as a Confederacy, a Republic or will they remain autonomous regions? How will they get the rest of the world to recognize them? Will they become countries in their own right?
@stewartx5 As for imports/exports I still believe that Texas will have a difficult time convincing other regions to do business with them. We can count out the US, Canada and South/Central America, Europe and the Commonwealth of Nations under Queen Elizabeth as they will be sure to align with the Union's trade embargo against Texas.
So that is going to leave Saudi Arabia, Russia and China to deal with; sounds like a pact with the devil to me.
Again, you're talking about Texas alone, while any succession will likely include many states (as before). Regardless, believe what you want. I suspect things will turn out very differently than you expect (none of the countries or regions mentioned have a overwhelming incentative to support an embargo or even the remaining union itself), but we'll have to wait to see. Texans know that before they were a part of the U.S. they were beyond all help economicly,and they had almost no military. They were in serious danger of being crushed by Mexico, Spain, or France. Even Austria made moves to invade and the U.S. made it clear that it would not stop an invasion, so Texas had to beg to be let in the Union. Even during the Civil War, Texas knew better than to leave without fellow states to help! So, I don't think Texas will ever leave, but they will threaten alot!

Second largest economy, again behind California and only slightly in front of New York which is both much smaller and has only about 3/4 of the population. Texas doesn't lead in Education and is the Third worst state for Healthcare. The Space program may be based there but all the Technology is developed elsewhere. Although Texas does lead in Teen Pregnancy !

I presume you mean state funded research, which is true. However, we don't necessarily need to pour state funds into a field to have it here.

The main reason you don't see a whole lot of funding for these sorts of things in the U.S. is because we have a different view of government and its role, even though the role of our government is slowly becoming more interventionist. If there's no actual demand for a product in the market, why try to artificially keep it alive?

You do still have to pay back any money your state borrowed from the US, it's part of the reason QC never left Canada. And what's your consumption rate? It really depends on who's more qualified and morally fit to run a productive and civilized society. If a state government really is more capable of self-government than the Federal government, then perhaps secession would make some sense. Usually, the trend leans towards Federal officials being more competent than state officials though.

Anti-secessionists clearly believe that, since a state once (decades or centuries ago) joined the union, the people within that state are forever bound to, or imprisoned by, that union regardless of their views or the actions of that union. What kind of democracy or freedom is that?
Idiots even throw around the word "treason" without knowing it's meaning. The idea of secession is to leave the union, not undermine or subvert it. Only latter two fit the definition of that in this context.

You can survive on vegetables and fish but not on a diet of beef and corn alone.
If Texas secedes, tax the crap out of vegetable exports to Texas; the rest of the country can live without beef. California, Oklhoma and Kansas will be richer to boot too.

Are you kidding? More than half the vegetables consumed in this country are already imported from overseas, not grown in California. Beef is also now mostly imported. Little of that will change (for any of the states) if Texas secedes. Of course, both Texas and California are wealthy enough to afford those imports. Texas may even gain considerably by losing it's share of the national debt.

Joking aside, I'm all for Texan secession; it will solve a lot of problems.
One of the major issues I do for-see though is the Union putting pressure on Mexico and Canada to discontinue importing goods from Texas. And considering these imports make up 34.4% and 8.4% respectively, this will hurt Texas pretty badly.

Actually, if Texas were to secede, a good number of other states (many of the so-called "red states") would likely secede as well, for similar reasons. In fact, further loss of political influence would virtually assure their secession. A union of those states would find plenty of nations willing to import and export goods. The end result would be two unions with vastly different political and social views, with substantially different cultures as well. Nothing wrong with that.

@stewartx5 I agree about other states joining in, with Alabama being Texas' strongest ally. I think that potentially N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and possibly Florida could seceed. You can count out Louisiana (too Catholic). The big question is, are all of these states going to be run as a Confederacy, a Republic or will they remain autonomous regions? How will they get the rest of the world to recognize them? Will they become countries in their own right?

@stewartx5 As for imports/exports I still believe that Texas will have a difficult time convincing other regions to do business with them. We can count out the US, Canada and South/Central America, Europe and the Commonwealth of Nations under Queen Elizabeth as they will be sure to align with the Union's trade embargo against Texas.
So that is going to leave Saudi Arabia, Russia and China to deal with; sounds like a pact with the devil to me.

I suspect things will turn out very differently than you expect (none of the countries or regions mentioned have a overwhelming incentative to support an embargo or even the remaining union itself), but we'll have to wait to see. @GuyPennebaker Just in case you didn't know the existing military is federal even national guard has some federal funding so we'll be taking some stuff back and unless the military people that aren't from texas want to change what country they live in they would be most likely reassigned and leaving the state. They don't get to keep everything i'm sure that would be negotiated.i would have to agree with the host of the show if that is what the people of texas want have a good time vote on it.

Texans know that before they were a part of the U.S. they were beyond all help economicly,and they had almost no military. They were in serious danger of being crushed by Mexico, Spain, or France. Even Austria made moves to invade and the U.S. made it clear that it would not stop an invasion, so Texas had to beg to be let in the Union. Even during the Civil War, Texas knew better than to leave without fellow states to help! So, I don't think Texas will ever leave, but they will threaten alot!

True, we would have to do a lot of rebuilding of the military infrastructure, but theoretically we would still be more powerful than most other countries. Texas has more people than all of Canada.
Anyway I think it is all nonsense. We couldn't succeed after we already did once in the civil war, when we rejoined the union it made that null & void.

Second largest economy, again behind California and only slightly in front of New York which is both much smaller and has only about 3/4 of the population. Texas doesn't lead in Education and is the Third worst state for Healthcare. The Space program may be based there but all the Technology is developed elsewhere. Although Texas does lead in Teen Pregnancy !

Texas is a diverse state and we have sizable populations of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Indians (mostly Tamil for some reason). Also, I'm not sure how true your claims on medical research are. I live in San Antonio and we have a very large medical community and there a many bio-tech firms here as well. I presume you mean state funded research, which is true. However, we don't necessarily need to pour state funds into a field to have it here.

@Mikeybetts I really don't see why that should be the case when the private sector is already doing it and is proving to be very able at doing so. The main reason you don't see a whole lot of funding for these sorts of things in the U.S. is because we have a different view of government and its role, even though the role of our government is slowly becoming more interventionist. If there's no actual demand for a product in the market, why try to artificially keep it alive?

You do still have to pay back any money your state borrowed from the US, it's part of the reason QC never left Canada. And what's your consumption rate? It's higher than Canada's that's for damn sure b/c we produce more than enough to sustain ourselves. How many crops does TX grow, could you feed your entire state? What about ports besides the Gulf?

It really depends on who's more qualified and morally fit to run a productive and civilized society. If a state government really is more capable of self-government than the Federal government, then perhaps secession would make some sense. Usually, the trend leans towards Federal officials being more competent than state officials though.
They need to cut spending on welfare and put more spending into infrastructure.
