You would be surprised at the amount of people that are involved in this. The TWH grand championship show brings in about 30 million dollars a year to Shelbyville Tenn., so they say. Hundreds of people fill the stands to watch the Cruelest Horse Show on Earth. It continues because of money and the government has allowed it. Senator Mitch Mcconell from kentucky has caused more damage to the these poor horses than any other person in the nation. Read Bonnie Erb's article that exposes this.
these horse already have high stepping gates but they have notched it up even more which I think is not that pretty. There horses would look even better just doing their normal paces which are already high. There is such a thing as over doing it.

I both agree and disagree with parts of this video. I don't think soring is okay. I don't think 4-inch stacks are okay. I do however think LIGHT chains and THIN pads (i.e. the ones you see with Morgans, Arabs, and Friesians) are alright. If you see a Tennessee Walker doing the 'big lick' without those aids, let me know, 'cuz as far as I'm concerned, that is not a natural gait.
In fact nearly every arab in the circuit shows with pads on their feet, maybe not to the same extent, but still it doesn't harm them in the least bit.
All show circuits have bad and good trainers, not everyone does this to their horse. This was from 20 years ago. Although it may be going on now, not all TWH trainers are doing this to their horses. I have seen and met several old show horses that have been using pads in their days as a show horse and are now retired. They are fine, fit as a fiddle. Pads go on in more then just the TWH circuit. The Arab circuit uses pads on their horses too.

Use of 2, 4 and 6 Ounce Chains The objectives of this study were to evaluate the use of 2, 4 and 6 ounce chains in Tennessee Walking Horses, without using any other chemical or mechanical technique to induce inflammation. Use of 2, 4 and 6 oz. chains did not cause any detectable pain, tissue damage. Thermographic and pressure evaluation did not change significantly.

The problem is that it is as unnatural as making a person continually step over a 2ft high board with every step- walking or running. It causes long term stress on the entire skeletal structure- above and beyond the cruel treatment given to make the horse conform to this gait in the first place. These horses break down early and tend to be unhealthy. It's unimaginable to me that they are still allowing this when even back in the 1800's they outlawed bearing reins.

The well-known "Auburn Study," conducted from September 1978 to December of 1982 at Auburn University, examined the "Thermography in diagnosis of inflammatory processes in horses in response to various chemical and physical factors." Using thermography, the researchers found that chains "altered thermal patterns as early as day 2 of exercise with chains. These altered thermal patterns persisted as long as chains were used," with normal thermal patterns seen after 20 days recovery.
The Auburn study also showed that 2,4, and 6 ounce chains produced no adverse effects in the horses being studied. A 6 ounce chain is the legal weight of chain allowed in NHSC horse shows.
Just as a clear up. Chains around their feet DO NOT cause pain. It is more the fact that the chains are weighted enough to work with resistance. Think about being at the beach and you are in the water. You are at about high shin to knee level. You will notice that when you walk you have to pick your feet up high in order to progress. The chains act in the same way. They also help keep a trotting horse from pacing/racking or a racking horse in the rack if they have difficulty staying in it.
Personally I think the TWH is a beautiful breed and their NATURAL gait looks NORMAL and comfortable for both rider and horse. Unlike the show horses, whose owners use chemicals and enormous shoes to get the desired "big lick". Those types of horses end up having joint problems that can and probably will lead to a short and painful life. Unfortunately this will not stop as long as money is still being made. It makes me sick to see that ppl are torturing animals for profit. I agree with hershey.

I'm glad to hear that. But then again isn't there cruel and bad trainers in every equestrian style? Racing, hunter/jumper, reining and every other one. The world isn't perfect so you can kind of expect each discipline to have it's flaws. (And by flaws I mean crappy trainers.)

Keith Dane, the Humane Society's director of equine protection, described several other techniques to me. Some owners pile layers of pads under the horses' hooves, held on by a metal strap that goes over the hoof and is attached with nails pounded into the hoof wall. Horses have been known to collapse in the show ring from the combination of ridiculous imbalance and intense pain.

I think all soaring is abusive. They put weights on the horses feat. About 5 pounds. They use chemicals that heart. So the horse head goes so high. There heads go high because it hurts. Soaring is mean and abusive.

FACT: Just this weekend the USDA all but shut down a big show in TN. WHY? the GIG IS UP! The government is aware of their industry trade secrets, and are FINALLY a step ahead of them instead of three steps behind. They are "sniffing" them out this year and they are shaking in their boots. FINALLY the "Big Lick" is being exposed for what it truly is -a CHEMICALLY ALTERED, UNNATURAL, MANMADE GAIT.
Actually it isnt fact. The 2 woemen the USDA sent to inspect the horses would turn horses down by pressing their long fingernails into the skina dn coronet band of the horses and MAKE it flinch and move. If the horse wouldnt move they pressed harder. When the trainers and the spectators saw their abuse of the animals they refused to put their aniamls thru a rigged inspection. From what I am told a video was sent to the USDA and an investigation is taking place.
to add more...USDA head vet Dr. Lynn Bourgeois said he loves to see the padded walking horses and loves to watch them perform and knows that the padded horse is very well cared for. But he said these two new women were hellbent on shutting down the industry and will stop at nothing to do just that.
FACT: This controversy would be over in a minutes time if you took just one of the WGC, or WC's to a sound trainer for two weeks and worked it in NOTHING but a six ounce chain.
FACT: There were over 500 violations/suspensions for 2007. Unilateral sore, bilateral sore, scar, etc. Over 500 - WOW! And to them that equals no more soring, LOL.
FACT: Because of their cruel and inhumane practices the TWH is the only horse breed to be regulated/inspected/prosecuted by the Federal Government.
FACT: NO amount of selective breeding with ONLY the use of pads and chains can produce the "big lick". They are all "sored" to some degree. Some more than others. MOST of the owners are aware of it, however, some are completely oblivious to the fact (by choice or just ignorance). When a horse sells or moves to another trainer how the horse is "fixed" is passed down from trainer to trainer.

Take a look at photos and data of horses who were injured in the past by the giant pads put on their hooves, take a look at the chains and the chemicals that burned their hair off on the fetlocks. Hundreds of people fill the stands to watch the Cruelest Horse Show on Earth. It continues because of money and the government has allowed it. Senator Mitch Mcconell from kentucky has caused more damage to the these poor horses than any other person in the nation. Read Bonnie Erb's article that exposes this.

Personally, I can't stand those high gates that look like a rocking horse gone rouge. Horses are supposed to be graceful, elegant. Even the draft breeds have that. Abuse or not, it is horrifyingly ugly to watch.

I both agree and disagree with parts of this video. I don't think soring is okay. I don't think 4-inch stacks are okay. I do however think LIGHT chains and THIN pads (i.e. the ones you see with Morgans, Arabs, and Friesians) are alright. If you see a Tennessee Walker doing the 'big lick' without those aids, let me know, 'cuz as far as I'm concerned, that is not a natural gait.

All show circuits have bad and good trainers, not everyone does this to their horse. This was from 20 years ago. Although it may be going on now, not all TWH trainers are doing this to their horses. I have seen and met several old show horses that have been using pads in their days as a show horse and are now retired. They are fine, fit as a fiddle. Pads go on in more then just the TWH circuit. The Arab circuit uses pads on their horses too.

The problem is that it is as unnatural as making a person continually step over a 2ft high board with every step- walking or running. It causes long term stress on the entire skeletal structure- above and beyond the cruel treatment given to make the horse conform to this gait in the first place. These horses break down early and tend to be unhealthy. It's unimaginable to me that they are still allowing this when even back in the 1800's they outlawed bearing reins.

Using thermography, the researchers found that chains "altered thermal patterns as early as day 2 of exercise with chains. Just as a clear up. Chains around their feet DO NOT cause pain. It is more the fact that the chains are weighted enough to work with resistance. Think about being at the beach and you are in the water. You are at about high shin to knee level. You will notice that when you walk you have to pick your feet up high in order to progress. The chains act in the same way. They also help keep a trotting horse from pacing/racking or a racking horse in the rack if they have difficulty staying in it.

Personally I think the TWH is a beautiful breed and their NATURAL gait looks NORMAL and comfortable for both rider and horse. Unlike the show horses, whose owners use chemicals and enormous shoes to get the desired "big lick". Those types of horses end up having joint problems that can and probably will lead to a short and painful life. Unfortunately this will not stop as long as money is still being made. It makes me sick to see that ppl are torturing animals for profit. I agree with hershey.

Some owners pile layers of pads under the horses' hooves, held on by a metal strap that goes over the hoof and is attached with nails pounded into the hoof wall. I own a TWH, and have been around many of them, I KNOW it hurts them. one person owns a horse from a "big lick" stable, this horse cannot CANTER anymore because it's hocks are in such terrible condition from wearing pads and soring! the poor animal is only 5 years old. Two point:#1. No-one EVER answered my question of why Paso Finos or Peruvioans carry Nose scars from training and why aren't they being regulated. #2. Anyone who knows anything about the WH industry knows that trainers can't risk their livlihood to the whims of untrained and ignorant VMOS who chge the interp of the rule from week to week. That's the prob...not sore horses. DQP's are mostly consistent but VMO's are not. Treehuggrs...check out the T-breds with 5K dead in 2 yrs. THAT'S cruelty.

FACT: Just this weekend the USDA all but shut down a big show in TN. WHY? the GIG IS UP! The government is aware of their industry trade secrets, and are FINALLY a step ahead of them instead of three steps behind. They are "sniffing" them out this year and they are shaking in their boots. FINALLY the "Big Lick" is being exposed for what it truly is -a CHEMICALLY ALTERED, UNNATURAL, MANMADE GAIT.

Actually it isnt fact. The 2 woemen the USDA sent to inspect the horses would turn horses down by pressing their long fingernails into the skina dn coronet band of the horses and MAKE it flinch and move. If the horse wouldnt move they pressed harder. When the trainers and the spectators saw their abuse of the animals they refused to put their aniamls thru a rigged inspection. From what I am told a video was sent to the USDA and an investigation is taking place.

FACT: This controversy would be over in a minutes time if you took just one of the WGC, or WC's to a sound trainer for two weeks and worked it in NOTHING but a six ounce chain.
FACT: There were over 500 violations/suspensions for 2007. Unilateral sore, bilateral sore, scar, etc. Over 500 - WOW! And to them that equals no more soring, LOL.
FACT: Because of their cruel and inhumane practices the TWH is the only horse breed to be regulated/inspected/prosecuted by the Federal Government.

FACT: NO amount of selective breeding with ONLY the use of pads and chains can produce the "big lick". They are all "sored" to some degree. Some more than others. MOST of the owners are aware of it, however, some are completely oblivious to the fact (by choice or just ignorance). When a horse sells or moves to another trainer how the horse is "fixed" is passed down from trainer to trainer.

Seems like you're the one with the ignorance problem. Take a look at photos and data of horses who were injured in the past by the giant pads put on their hooves, take a look at the chains and the chemicals that burned their hair off on the fetlocks. I'm not trying to argue, I'm simply asking you to take a look at the damage of what this industry (few and far between) does to horses. Please don't bring up race horses, that's a different subject.

You dontmuch about gaited breeds then. Hackneys, 5 gaited, Saddlebreds, mogans, and several others wear pads and action devices. COmapring them to high heels shows you ignorance and lack of knowledge about the padded horse. Their foot angles are the same as if they were standing on keg shoes. It is the law, and every horse is measured before it shows. Do your homeowrk and post facts next time.

They might be excused for throwing a shoe, cantering in front of the judges, or just being off. Yes, some horses might have injuries at some point their life. Dont we all?
