  • It just doesn't get any better than this...TRUELY SOULFUL!

  • Wow...truly outstanding...the feel, the sound...yes. orangeviolins said it all. Two outstanding musicians putting it out there

  • Robert Cray is the SHIT, and John Hiatt is the By God TRUTH, the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH!

  • Robert Cray could sing the hell out of the phone book.......what a voice!

  • Orangeviolins put it best. These guys took it deep and out of the ballpark. Awesome version.

  • Thanks so much for posting. I remember this show and how there was always an eclectic blend of artists jamming together like this. Memories.

  • Decent version....I liked Otis Redding & Carla Thomas' version better though.

  • I TOTALLY remember this particular show! Absolutely blew me away with this performance!!! had it on VHS for years (until the VCR ate it! Was so bummed!) until NOW!!! What an awesome collaboration!!!! LOVE it!!!!!

  • After I saw so many covers of this song , I finnaly came to this ,,This is the Best.

I can see their respect for The Great Sam & Dave,, Two Thumbs Way Up !!!

David Sanborn plays even soulful than usual,, and Marcus Miller On the bass ?,,

  • This is my favourite song of all time! I have looked everywhere for this version...does anyone have it or know where I can download it?

  • that's the shit

  • Heading out to see John Hiatt later this month. Seen Robert Cray when he opened for Eric Clapton in Seattle at the Key Arena a few years back. I've always liked Robert Cray. Seeing him live, he was better than Clapton, I dare say.

  • Hiatt, Cray and Sanborn - superb

  • That's the way it should be people. Take note young ones.

  • Sweeeet!!! :)~~

  • I knew Robert and John were good friends, but never saw this...nicely done. Powerful.

  • Oh lawd.lawd lawdy lawdyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

lawd lawd lawd hep' me lawd

  • Great stuff....man they do this song so very well....

  • What a great duo.

Although Robert Cray was wonderful the singing by John Hiatt here is some of the most soulful I have ever heard.

To Ashstrat 07 you are absolutely right. John Hiatt's talent is very under appreciated and under recognized by the general public.

The fluffy pop songs sell a gazillion records but this is the real beauty in music.

  • Oh...what a stunning song...the lyrics say it all. And the music just makes it sail. And these two virtuousoes really knock it out of the ballpark!!

  • Outstanding!

  • Damn..that's about as good as it gets.....

  • you said it.

  • göttliches gitarrenspiel

  • What a fantastic duet! :-)

  • Talent in its purest form

  • Hiatt is a great writer and an unappreciated performer.

  • the david sanborn show was the best

  • If there is a better performer than robert cray I haven't seen him yet.

  • You don't have to be known as a "blues" person to do the blues - John Hiatt kicks ass. Robert Cray is the MAN.

  • thanks...this kind of music really killing me...loved it...thank for posted it...

  • Nice post!

    Beautiful perfomance!

  • This show was the best. There's nothing like it on now. Chris Issaks is doing a talk/play thing. Maybe it will be good but Dave got the best guests and sidemen.

  • robert crays voice ay, forgot just how good it is, nice sax azwell, gonna check out some more r.c now, merci

  • Great harmony on there.

  • I am a huge John Hiatt and Robert Cray fan. I don't think I have ever heard a more Sam Moore like performance than what Robert Cray does on this video. Spectacular.

  • Incredible

  • wow, so amazing..

  • I saw them on this tour. March, 1989. The Orpheum Theater in Memphis. My hair stood on end when they did this.

  • John Hiatt was great on this, those two sound fantastic together what a great performance.

  • thanks for posting this.I saw the show when it was on back in the day.1 of the best performances ever.

  • Way Kool Cray (!); Hiatt take a back seat on this one; doesnt seem to fit his style; nice vid though no doubt.

  • RIP Isaac Hayes for co-writing this masterpiece.

  • I heard this on the old David Sanborn show. This was a great performance.

  • This is the old David Sanborn show, called Night Music.

I was at the taping in NYC. The first time they tried it, there was a power failure in the building. They had to come back and try again. That is David Sanborn on sax.

  • Man that's cool, and that sweet sax......

  • very nice....

  • What a dream - Robert Cray & John Hiatt. I won't be able to get enough of this! If ever there was a love song ...

  • That's almost enough to make you want to cry-three great musicians--I love John Hiatt

  • There's something wrong with all them babies...but Dave you're smokin' on this thing.

    Your buddy...Don in FLA

  • Cool - didn't know they've toured together. Fantastic and with David Sandborn on sax?...

  • Damn!! They sound GREAT together!!

  • When two remarkable artists get together you get Magic! Somebody put this on a CD. I need to hear it over and over.

  • It's "Night Music" something like 1989 or 1990 on NBC I think

  • wow

  • unreal. they should deffinately consider having a child ha. bloody awsome

  • great stuff

  • I saw them do this on the tour in 1989, in Memphis. It was incredible then, and seeing this takes me back to a great night of music.

  • Two greats together. Doesn't get better than this.

  • I think Crays voice is at it's best with this type of song.I love Hiatts'Crossing muddy waters'album.

  • Very cool!!! I thank you!!
