God, listening to this kind of music makes me sad for my generation, I'm 23 and I can't stand listening to the crap that comes on my radio. Its so bad, I've been forcing myself to listen to NPR!!!
It truly makes me glad when a youngblood posts he's between 10-18 and loves the music of the 70's. Makes it worth all that partying I had to do. From Soul to Funk to Jazz. This was when musicians walked the earth.
When i hear this funky old school tune a feeling of unity comes over me... this is a universal feeling that alll people of soul should carry 24/7 the 70s was a very rare & special time.. man the funk on this cut is awesome stop look & smell the sunday morning hash & eggs thats cooking. My people man... i have to laugh about the mind set... making a jamm about food & making it funky. Ahhh the
70's never will see a time like this again. Peace!!
All the comments are "on the money". What's interesting about this album "City Life" is that Donald Byrd wasn't credited as the trumpet player, although he clearly was. This sound, which was established by Larry & Fonze Mizell, made Donald Byrd, The Blackbyds, Bobby Humphrey, and Gary Bartz more mainstream.
Checkout Gary Bartz's "Music Is My Sanctuary", which is on CD. "Macaroni, Macaroni, Macaroni!
I loved it when John Witherspoon used the term in one of his stand up performances.
Now if you said you see Huggy Bear from "Baretta" runnin' from some hoodlums trying to do him in and he turns around and decides to fight while Baretta comes to help him, I can dig that.
I think the terms "Hash and Eggs" could be metaphorical. Dig, "over easy, not too greasy", could be applied to many issues with life in general. "Macaroni" is a regional term for money. I heard it used in the "Wire". That being set in Baltimaore and also the same place of Gary Bartz birth and nurturing. I guess there's method to some madness.
Oh, it's great to know others dug the sound' of City Life aside from "Rock Creek Park". The whole lp was inundated with some vintage funky ass grooves compliments of the Mizell Brothers, who I think deserves more props as alltime great producers of funky jazz.
You're right, the Blackbyrds, backed by the Mizell Bros., were it!! And how about the title cut from the subsequent LP, Unfinished Business? That was another funky-ass instrumental that no one hears anymore!!
Thanks Ol', you know the time, as a brother who deeply appreciates the Mizell sound, I selected this cut because it showcases their unique touch on this group and many more.
