  • I can't wait to hear the new turbos next year!

  • @1969captainron btw, slower traffic should only keep their line, on ovals. That helps leaders, also. =)

In the end, Little Al recognized Emmo did deserve that win. He even gave the Brazilian thumbs up, during the caution. =)

  • @1969captainron Slower cars, even though they are shown the blue flag, aren't forced to slow down and let the leaders go by, as in F1. There is, however, a common sense, that in R/S courses they should let leaders pass, if they're not fighting for position. On ovals, though, rules are such that if you make a move on another driver behind you, and you're not attacking, that's called blocking and you get black flagged.

  • A Legend of F1 and Racing X someone.

  • If I am not mistaken this is where he didn't drink the milk??

  • @U3X6785 No, that was in '93.

  • Got to agree with those wives thing, F1 is picking the same thing up with almost the whole of the family of the driver! So lame, any other way Indycar rules.

  • O áudio tá picotado... Tá péssimo!!!

  • @teobarbosabrother Tá mesmo... mas essa foi f$#@! O Al Unser Jr. deve estar chorando até hoje!!! kkkkkkkk

  • Emerson Fittipaldi was really the best. He taught the americans how to drive in indianapolis

  • Couldn't give a shit about what the reaction of someones wife is.

  • @allen2096 It quantifies the tension, or so they think. Can get annoying at times though.

  • The wives are very important from the spectators perspective, we need to see who will be pending the prize money...

  • Emmerson Wins! Al Unser loses!

  • agreed

  • um,. because wives are pretty.

  • Love how Emo's wife, Teresa, prays for a mirracle and then celebrates when Little Al hits the wall.

    Stay classy Brazil...

  • I'm a BIG Formula One fan, and that was a thrilling and dramatic race finish :-)

  • The audio gave me a seizure. FAIL

  • Emmo the best ever ever and ever !

  • Al Unser Jr should have been mad he did that really ruthless.

  • This was actually very difficult to watch--almost gut-wrenching. My two favorite drivers in IndyCar. I grew up watching Foyt, Unsers, Mears, but the best racing with the coolest looking cars was 1988-1994. So much happenned later. Shelley Unser and Little Al got divorced. Not qualifying for the 1995 Indy500 sent him on a downward spiral. I rooted soo hard for Little Al, even in IRL. And Emerson--what can you say? He should have been a 4 time winner (gearbox '91, wall '94)-he taught Helio

  • Horrible Directing! We're we suppose to be watching the wives or the race?

  • the backmarkers were terrible this race

  • Thats what you call bad luck

  • this is the difference of a very good indycar driver.

and a 2 times Formula 1 world champion

  • wow...don't be another closed minded F1 fanboy, or anything. douche. and I am a fan of F1 more than any American open wheel series, but that attitude is horrible. racing is racing, Emmo didn't come over and stomp over everyone every single race. no, he had serious competition while he was over here. so shut your mouth and know what you're talking about before you try and insult some very talented people.

  • damn Emmo!!!

  • omg, that must've been so frustrating.

  • I'm comparing how i failed algebra to this finish. Came close to passing, but i crashed at the very end. Yes, it's odd !

  • Al Unser Jr at that time was very irresponsible, but I think really the Fittipaldi has a touch of experience in Al Unser Jr. ... 1994 came the punishment ...

  • I do not call this a punishment as a clear domination in performance.

  • when they redid the walls at Indy, Al Jr. bought the section of the wall he hit. I believe it is now lining the driveway at the Unser racing Museum here in Albuquerque.

  • Well, at least the sound on this video was amazing.

    Thanks for posting nonetheless.

  • Tentou fechar a porta do Emerson mas se deu mau..

  • This is the only Indy I remember where traffic played a deciding factor in the end..I think that made it the best finish and showcased the drivers at their very best..in the end, Emmo handled it better

  • How? he drove right in the side of Little Al

  • Hey racermac 1988 what was paul page suppossed to say? "wow what an exiting race under yellow as thy go 110 mph, WOWWIE"!!!I guess you missed him shouting as little Al was heading into the wall.Oh bye the way,the two drivers have wives, yeah, really, have you heard................lol!It would have been even more unbeleivable if the incident happenned on the final lap instead of 2nd to last!okay Emmo drink your oj.

  • hes done this before... He did what he had to win.. I dont agree with what he did but oh well..

  • I will remember the driver's wives names for as long as i live: Shelly Unser and Teresa Fittipaldi; however neither are together with them anymore.

  • its really hard to point the blame it was just a close race. They were both going for it and the both came up on a group of lapped traffic thus causing them to take different driving lines. It was just a racing incident in traffic but what an exciting battle!

  • this was the best of the best! some of the greatest drivers to race at the speedway they both won indy 2 times in their great carrears

  • Looks like Emerson cut Little Al off as he tried to pass slower traffic down low. Little Al clearly had the correct line and Emerson didn't see far enough ahead to plan for the traffic. Then again earlier at 3:39 on this video Jr cut Emerson off on a straightaway as little Al attempted to dodge traffic. Partly because it was a straightaway and partly because of heads-up driving he (Emerson) avoided contact and took control of what could have been a spin. Tit for tat in my opinion.

  • This is my favorite 500. What a duel between two great indy 500 champions

  • God I hate these idiot directors who constantly cut to drivers' wives.

  • a grate moment

    my frist 500 race

    i was at that race

  • Dos grandes del automovilismo sin duda alguna. Uno, un capo de la Fórmula 1 y la Indy Car, el otro, uno de los grandes campeones de la Indy.

  • Love how Paul Page just sits back with the rest of us and occaisionally tells us what is going on. Pure emotion!

  • emmo is the man!!!!!!!!!!

  • god listen to that crowd, those cars... now thats great. page is amazing too

  • Man, i remember this race! AU Jr. was such a great driver and his career was destroyed by booze.

  • wasn't this the beginning of Indy fans hating Emmo for not drinking the traditional Milk at victory circle going for OJ instead.

  • He did that in 1993. He drank the milk in 89.

  • I remember this day. I was a 9 years old boy, and I celebrate Emerson´s victory, as a brazilian should do. Almost 20 years later, I realize how americans get sad with this race...that´s a shame.

Both Fittipaldi and Unser Jr. were two great and unforgetable drivers.

It doesn´t matter who was better or worst. Two legends....that´s enough!

    Hugs from Brazil.

  • wow in the replay you can see what happens to the right front tire of Al junior. It flew over the catchfence, very lucky that nobody was hurt.

  • It was the left front and no it didn't. The fence caught it.

  • THE WORST thing about american racing is you show the fucking bitch ass wives instead of the racing!! WHO THE FUCK cares about them?!?!?!?!

  • it has to be a fucking soap-opera. in america its all about fans. but if they knew anything about motorsport fans, especially in america, theyd stop the bullshit and get to racing, if they did that, then american racing may get back to the awesomeness it used to be

  • This video is from 1989 you dorks, this is when American racing was its peak.

  • and showing the drivers' dumb bitches instead of thrilling racing 'at its peak'

  • you know something you can just fuk off punk.

your nothing but a fuking loser.

  • haha chill out buddy, wasnt even talking to you but alright get into a finished conversation and be a crazy mother fucker...dickhead

  • This was a great race. I was 7 yrs. old at the time and remember leaving my seat crying. Emmo definitely came up the track on Al. He never should have tried the pass in turn 3. If not for lapped traffic, Al would have won.

I've always thought that Al's thumbs up gesture was meant to be sarcastic. If you look at his body language, it doesn't seem sincere. In the end, it evened out though. Emmo put it in the wall in 94 when he was almost a full lap ahead. He wasn't half the driver Al was.

  • Emmo wasn´t half of the driver Al was?!?

    Lol, rofl

Emmo was just 3 times F1 Champion you know then moved to indy and was world champion at 89

  • Interviewed about this event,F.talked about slightly sliding getting into the turbolence of a slower car ahead of his Penske-

of course he was abs.determined to win not giving up at any risk but cornering at 220 mph in the stream of another car does induce sliding=

He was lucky indeed (but what a control...)-

P.S.due to a management mess up F.had had full tank refuelling and not just half as correctly did Al =

  • Two great drivers.....Emmo, we´ll be eternally gratefull to you.

Ayrton and Dale (other two amazing), R.I.P. and thank ya.

  • That is correct. The fact is that Al and Emmerson raced for Penske later and never had trouble against each other...

Oh yeah, almost forgot... fuck you, Flynnsox. You should have some respect to the dead. Senna was a genius, probably the best driver ever. Dale Earnhardt knew how to turn to the left as well, but see what happened... a mechanical failure took his life, just like in the Senna´s crash. You should be a lot more respectful.

  • To poorif - thx so much for expl. - so fine hearing of

    such a gentlemen's style among Indy drivers = that's

a good line also in everyday's life = HI!

  • .....sorry, I wonder if he did it on purpose..

  • No, I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. Remember: These are open-wheel cars, and if they touch at that speed, either car can literally go flying. I've NEVER heard of an open-wheel driver intentionally punting another driver. It's the Indy 500, the white flag is waiting around the next turn, and they're both going for it, caution be damned. That's all.

  • I understand - due to the terrifying effects of crashing at 200 mph and over,I see quite a common correct line among drivers racing in ovals = Thx -

P.S.:Unser's got something to talk about with Fitti!

  • I should correct myself: I've never heard of an open-wheel driver intentionally punting another on an oval. Such shenanigans do occasionally happen on road courses, however, where the speeds are lower and the risks much less (see, e.g., Senna v. Prost, Suzuka, 1989).

  • A nice postscript to this story: Unser was very gracious in the post-race interview. In so many words, he said that both drivers were both going for it & that the accident really wasn't avoidable. He also gave Emmo a "thumbs up" at trackside - a tremendous display of sportsmanship under the circumstances & one of the reasons that, despite all his problems off the track, Little Al was and will always be my favorite open-wheel driver.

  • As I'm not aware of Indy rules I wonder if Fitti move

can be valued uncorrect or barely correct due to the finish rush contest- he starts sliding too, taking a huge risk so I wander if he did it on purpose- Thx=

  • Yes we only turn left. That's why it takes a long time for us to get anywhere driving.

  • Hey, renanlombigous watch your mouth. Champcar4ever, good one, that'll shut renanlombigous up.

  • your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries.

  • Google Laguna Seca, Road America, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Long Beach, etc, you imbecile. Too bad Senna didn't know when to turn left. That's why he's dead.

  • OUCH

  • What the hell?

  • @renanlombigous BULLSHIT! have you ever herd of the Grand Am series? ALMS? The Indycar series? EVEN NASCAR RACES ON ROAD COURSES TOO! you are truly a person who has no respect for american racing if you really mean that. you need to watch some of those races if you want to see REAL american racing. given the Indy 500 is an oval, but it's been an oval since 1909!

  • @renanlombigous BULLSHIT! have you ever herd of the Indycar series? the Grand Am series? the ALMS? NASCAR's road races? (yes, you read right, NASCAR races on road courses), if you seriously think that American racing is just a bunch of hillbillys driving stock cars on a f#cking oval (by that, I mean most NASCAR races), you need an intervention ASAP! plus, while the Indycar series does race on ovals occasionally, at least its exciting (NASCAR sucks!), and they race on road courses more often! >:(

  • when I was a kid emmo was my favorite driver and al was my second. awesome finish.

  • Great action. Pity the tv boys seem more interested in the wives on the sidelines than the action itself.

  • I was only 6 when this happened, but I remember it and was pissed. I was a huge Al Jr. fan, and I always hated Emmo after this race. That was a nice rookie-esque move he made there (2-time F1 champion my ass!).

  • I was nine years old and this is one of my fondest memories. I was sitting just down from turn four, but not in the grandstands. Thank you for posting!!!

  • This was my favorite moment in auto racing. Al Jr had pulled so many similar stunts and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him lose that way.

  • Does anyone know why all but the top two cars were so many laps down in this race? Mario is definitely slower than the leaders in that shot, but not seven laps slower & he was running 4th! The third place driver, Raul Boesel, finished six laps down. I know that cars with Chevy engines had a big advantage during that era, but Mario was running a Chevy & I'm assuming that there were others in the field as well. Why the big spread?

  • wtf with the sound

  • He still would have been 4 laps down.

  • ...and there would be four laps to go. Two laps later, he would have passed the two stationary cars and taken the lead and won the race as the first car to complete 200 laps.

  • How surreal would it have been if Fittipaldi's car had been unable to continue, and the previously-six-laps-down Raul Boesel emerged as the winner?

  • I was at this race i was 3 and cant remember but damn what a finish!

  • Awsome Race!

  • Thanks again. Sucks about the sound though.
