That is not true at all. The people who went to watch the football had already paid 100s if not 1000s for flights and tickets and could afford to stay in nice hotels. There were simply not enough of any type because Russia has not been a tourist destination for long enough. When I went to Moscow I stayed in the Rosiya which has now been knocked down. It was horrible on the inside and the outside so it was the best thing for it. It did use to be the largest hotel in Europe though.

I never said it was a good hotel! I was a student at the time and was told where to stay by my university. Obviously being a student I would not be staying in a 5*. Moscow has very few middle range hotels. The $150-250 a night range. I just saying that Moscow is not the best city in the world for anything. I believe Hanoi has more culture, Sydney has a better nightlife, Tokyo and London has better shopping and Barcelona and Venice has better restaurants. Life was not so good under the USSR. There was no incentive to work hard because you could not accumulate wealth. You saved all your life to be able to afford a Lada. You got a free holiday to Odessa once and year and a black and white TV!!. The shops were empty of consumer goods. Ironically the USSR could have collapsed many times during the 60s and 70s due to bad harvests. It was the West who supplied the USSR grain. The USSR was never self sufficient.

My parents went to Russia during the 1980s and the shops were empty. There were big long queues for even the simplest of things.

I like Russia but not because I would want to live there but because it is interesting. Moscow is obviously not the best city on the world in any ranking I would imagine. It would not be top for restaurants, living standards, job opportunities etc. Of course Britain is better. Britain is 6th in the world as a tourist destination. People want to come here. It's richer and generally a nicer place to live. Most Russian cities are more like Magadan than Moscow. Characterless, crumbling apartments.

You did not see any mess in Russia? I certainly did when I went. I saw terrible infrastructure. Roads with holes in them big enough to lose a small car. Trains which travel at 30mph. Whole towns built from terrible apartment blocks which have not been renovated since they were put up back in the 1960s. Street children begging for money. A countryside which is dying and full of ghost villages. Lovely people and very interesting history yes.

During the Champions League final in moscow 2008 there were not enough hotels to accommodate 40.000 people. What sort of city the size of Moscow does not have enough hotel beds for 40,000 people. I rest my case.

That is not true at all. The people who went to watch the football had already paid 100s if not 1000s for flights and tickets and could afford to stay in nice hotels. There were simply not enough of any type because Russia has not been a tourist destination for long enough. When I went to Moscow I stayed in the Rosiya which has now been knocked down. It was horrible on the inside and the outside so it was the best thing for it. It did use to be the largest hotel in Europe though.

Rossiya hotel! If it was a good one - they wouldn`t knock it down on the first place. It was a cheap 3-stars hotel, even though the largest one. That shows WHAT KIND of hotels you prefer EddyBaby. I never said it was a good hotel! I was a student at the time and was told where to stay by my university. Obviously being a student I would not be staying in a 5*. Moscow has very few middle range hotels. The $150-250 a night range. I just saying that Moscow is not the best city in the world for anything. I loved Moscow but it does not have the best nightlife, shops, restaurants really compared to many other cities. Morals? Why is the road of bones called the road of bones?

How is saying that you dont think Moscow is the best city in the world nasty? I believe Hanoi has more culture, Sydney has a better nightlife, Tokyo and London has better shopping and Barcelona and Venice has better restaurants. I did enjoy Moscow when I was there but it is a city still rebuilding itself from 60 years of communism and this will take time.

Life was not so good under the USSR. There was no incentive to work hard because you could not accumulate wealth. You saved all your life to be able to afford a Lada. You got a free holiday to Odessa once and year and a black and white TV!!. The shops were empty of consumer goods. Ironically the USSR could have collapsed many times during the 60s and 70s due to bad harvests. It was the West who supplied the USSR grain. The USSR was never self sufficient.

What happens if the people who are in your one party system are not very good? You can not vote them out so they stay in power for decades. They are corrupt and they do not care about the people just their job and position. You end up living in a shitty apartment block, with a black and white TV and have to wait in a nice line for food. So you are saying that Soviet consumer goods were better than the West? Soviet cars were of such poor standard they could not be exported to the West. Why did Eastern Europe copy fiat for example? Soviet electronics were the same. The USSR spent the vast majority of its budget on the armed forces which left little for household goods. This is a fact. My parents went to Russia during the 1980s and the shops were empty. There were big long queues for even the simplest of things.

I like Russia but not because I would want to live there but because it is interesting. Moscow is obviously not the best city on the world in any ranking I would imagine. It would not be top for restaurants, living standards, job opportunities etc. Of course Britain is better. Britain is 6th in the world as a tourist destination. People want to come here. It's richer and generally a nicer place to live. Most Russian cities are more like Magadan than Moscow. Characterless, crumbling apartments.

You did not see any mess in Russia? I certainly did when I went. I saw terrible infrastructure. Roads with holes in them big enough to lose a small car. Trains which travel at 30mph. Whole towns built from terrible apartment blocks which have not been renovated since they were put up back in the 1960s. Street children begging for money. A countryside which is dying and full of ghost villages. Lovely people and very interesting history yes.

Of course there is no perfect place but know what I saw when I went to Russia. I loved my trip it was great and I saw some really interesting museums, architecture and other sites. However, there are plenty of young healthy men drunk and asleep on moscow underground or just lying in the streets. The average male life expectancy for a Russia man is only 59. That is the worst in Europe and Asia!! Russia has the second highest suicide rate in the world!!!!? Gays? What you on about?

Yes it is a nice city over 2K years old ! I also recommend Sibiu , Brasov & Sighisoara if you have a chance to visit.I was born in Bucharest but is very hectic and busy so i would stay away from that but depends what you like. Good luck and i hope you enjoy your visit!

Well, you can walk the streets in midnight, and be 99,999% sure what nothing bad will happen. We have some street crime, but it's a million times lower then in NY. People are generally nice here.
