PLEASE EVERYONE CHECK OUT A FEW OF MY GUITAR COVERS. INCLUDING A COVER OF THE HUNTER, AN ORIGINAL BLUES JAM AND AN ORIGINAL SLIDE JAM. IM TRYING TO REALLY GET THAT KOSSOFF STYLE/SOUND, AND I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK!! CHEERS!!!!!
andy, could not agree more about some of the outlandish commentary, roger chapman vibrato, what the fuck is that about?? lets just stick to listening to one of the greatest british bands ever and to fuck with them!!
Love Free, Bad Company, Paul Rodgers, but that Nigel Cross geezer has to do his homework and stop talking out of his arse - Rod Stewart was workng the microphone stand and doing other showboating in the early days of the Jeff Beck Group
Having interviewed Paul Rodgers 4 times, I can tell you he's a class act. A rock-n-roll legend who's so down to Earth you could just go have a beer with him and feel that you're with "one of the guys". God Bless Paul and Cynthia.
In my opinion Paul Rodgers has the best octave range in rock history next to Freddy Mercury. I mean why else do you think he works with Queen. His vioce is very bluesy for a white man and he's got a lot of soul hence the nickname- "White man with soul". Simon Kirke is one of the best straight ahead strikers next to Charlie Watts and Phil Rudd. As for Paul Kossoff he never received the recognition for his talent, and was snatched away from his fans with what seems like all the good musicians.
The best British blues-rock band ever+one of the most original guitarists (but Koss with perm by the GF is ludicrous). The commentees may be a load of old wankers but you'll get no first hand comments from anyone much younger. You've got to have seen Free and been into them at the time to give a worthwhile opinion so you're talking people my age (50s). Yeah Tommy Vance sems like a prat (he also made an arse of himself on a celebrity chef show) but he was ill and now he's dead so forgive him.
I always liked Paul Rogers voice, However Plant is an icon and deserves to be! And vibrato is bad because.....?"one of the first guys to work the microphone stand" "didn't over egg the pudding"? It's too bad Free didn't have somebody else to speak in their favour apart from these wankers. And what the fuck is a tommy vance any way ? thanks for the post however!
Great great band for sure. But there was some poncy wanking going in with the commentary. Robert Plant as a gimmicky singer because of his vibrato? Please! That's his voice for christs sake. RnR is all about being exactly yourself, there is no right way to do it. Plant was perfect for the music of Zep, as Rogers was for the music of Free. I just find this prescriptive attitude rather wanky.
@andysnadden totally agree - it's difficult to separate their opinions from reminiscing - these series come across as an anarak critique - much of what these unknowns say is blindingly obvious - the Free DVD set is a slam dunk compared to this drivel
Why do they make documentaries and then have so called experts who know nothing..like the guys talking about Kossoff's guitar playing here..Geoff W should know better..he played in Crawler..but now he plays like a teacher !! Sterile !!! There are 3 peope I know who can vib and are as sensitive as Kossoff...ME for one, Steve Boyce and Robin Trower possibly...everyone else is too unnatural or inaccurate or just weedy !!!Rodgers could have whoever he wants now and picks such mediocre players.
jddskench, I completely agree with you. Rodgers has chosen to work with some of the crappest guitar players I think I have heard since the early nineties. Can't he hear that they are kind of stuck in that terrible eighties effects box treble fuzz noice thing. Does his voice no justice, and I would even go as far to say that it makes Rodgers sound run of the mill at times!!.Get some new blue!!
Crappest guitar players since the nineties? -- Free was in the era of the 70's, and broke up during the late 70's. So how can they be "stuck in the eighties"? Silly.
I believe he is talking about the current guitar players Paul Rodgers tours with. By the way-Free was active from 68 to 73. The original Bad Co lineup was together from 74 to 82.

Andy Fraser and James Lea are 2 of the best lead bassists in Rock History. The other being Terrance Butler.PLUS, they are all great songwriters too!

True, and how come vibrato in your voice is gimmicky, but playin with the mic stand is not? Interesting ideas there.
