  • i wonder how many of those jawja bulldawgs getting liquored up 'tween the hedges on sat'diy realized that their futbaw program was being overshadowed by geniuses at making either arty trash or trashy art....kate p. and company 4-ever.

  • wheres the rest of this documentary?

  • Bill Berry used to fill on drums for Love Tractor. He almost quit REM to join Love Tractor but thank whatever deity he stayed with REM.

  • wats the song at 2:39

  • @TheBalloonHoax Sounds like something from Love Tractor's (instrumental) album 'Til the Cows Come Home. Great album. You can get it on iTunes.

  • Yeah, I looked myself and it is indeed true, MAC is having a contest for a lot of free make up but not for much longer. :D My cousin found out about it on MAC Makeups face book site. Since your a little bit lazy, I can save you some time looking for it, this link goes to the official contest web site.

ALSO, make sure you use the coupon code MAC100 on page 2. I am going to upload a new video of my latest haul as soon as possible!!!!!

  • OK dude, you are forgiven for the frikkin voice bubble on Radio Free Europe now. This is one of my favorite documentaries. What's your opinion on Love Tractor and Pylon? Don't see any of their stuff on your channel. Ilove the quote "Fred worked here" !!!

  • REM was the best of this bunch, but the rest, gimme a break....how many aging hipsters watch this and dream of the old days?.......This stuff, for the most part sucked worse than Rick Astley or Color Me BADD

  • I love how it shows all these bands, including R.E.M, and then just slams into the Flat Duo Jets playing live. Nothing can top the Duo Jets...

  • I get really pissed when ppl try and make comparisons like "The next R.E.M." i've actually gotten in serious fights coz of that shit.Nobody will ever understand this era in music unless u grew up with it or have southern roots and family still in G.A. like myself.

  • way before, way way before The White Stripes...............Flat Duo Jets!

  • I was born in 85

  • LOVE TRACTOR!!! YEA!!!

  • The Jets...never to be forgotten

  • Wow. Taco Stand was not bad food, though.

  • Blake Babies! Holy crap, haha....I remember them.

  • Rock n roll is a small city, friends and playing with your soul. This little place had some big shit come outta it.

  • So you're saying that Boston lagged Athens in terms of 'cool bands per capita.'

I gotta say 'yep' to that.

  • I was born in Athens and grew up in a small town nearby. I miss it there...I haven't been back in a little over a year =(

  • I was born in Athens too, but we moved shortly thereafter to Dallas, GA. I've always felt an attraction to the town.

  • Who remembers the guy at 1:32 on the counter? I remember meeting him when I was in Athens. He gave us some great tips on what to see in Athens and talked us into staying one more day to see the Chickasaw Mudpuppies. So glad he did!!! They were awesome!

  • That's Ort.

  • Makes me want to go to Yudys for some curly fries.

  • Wow. A starkly real vision of a romanticized period of a place close to home. Thanks for posting.

  • my unlce is the bassist of love tractor

its really cool to see this

  • Flat Duo Jets.

  • This is the complete film or only part of it?

  • It's a full length documentary... this is only part of it. You can probably find the whole thing at "Netflicks"

  • Ok, but... what is "Netflicks"? Is a web like Megaupload or Rapidshare?

  • No, sorry it's an paid movie subscription service. I don't know where you would find it for free. Besides the Athens public library.

  • like seattle, wa..athens ga puts out good bands...and i can't even say that for my home town of boston.

  • I lived in Athens during the first half of the 80s, and it certainly was a good place for creative musicians and artists.

But don't sell Boston short. You give us some very cool bands: The Lyres, Mission of Burma, Lemonheads, Blake Babies - just off the top of my head.

  • Remember The Neats? They were awesome.

  • You're much too young to remember The Neats from when they were active. How did they happen to you?

  • I'm 45. I got into them back in 1984 after hearing Peter Buck talking about them. I got the vinyl at WaxnFacts in Little 5 Points in Atlanta.

  • @hugemanatee

    nahhhh,

athens and seattle kick boston's bum in music.

  • the guy at 1:14 looks familliar..anyone know who he is?

  • g.goat - That's Jim Herbert, internationally famed artist, filmmaker, and teach. He lived in Athens in the '80s, taught at UGA, and made films and videos of local bands. He did REM's first video.

  • i wish they would make a new one. this came out around the time i was born... i'm 24 now. still, i love my town!

  • I LIVE IN oconee ga there is beside athens

  • Who cares about now. Back then it was a special place.

  • Just to comment on BucksStudent's comment, I lived in Athens for 20 years and heard music everywhere. The home I owned was inbetween two houses rented to musicians, I got a concert everyday, no complaints. Wearver D's, which Automatic For The People Was Named, and The 40 Watt are still good luck charms for hopeful future stars. Yes, the old clubs are gone. But the old houses in Normal Town and all across the city are not.And that's where the talent starts.

  • Ah, checkmate! The only success story i can think of off the top of my head is Bubba Sparxxx. But my point was really not about commercial success, but more about the B52's and R.E.M's success being used as an inspiration, and good luck charm to some. It's the ambiance of the city, whether bands are playing in clubs or garages. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there. make more sense?

  • He's not a 'band', but I'm not sure how you missed Danger Mouse.

  • Mainstream recognition is so the wrong priority for Athens-based artists and musicians.

That's like moving your band to Nashville or LA to get street cred.

(Yeah, I know you're trolling. I just wanted to make my statement.)

  • I luv Athens, GA! I was born there and I;m a FULL, 100% GA Bulldawg fan!! Right now my big sis is going to UGA, lucky.

If some of the people here are up to date with Athens, check out a singer named: Corey Smith. He is based in Athens and he sings the song (my most favorite) "Every Dawg". My sister goes to pretty much about everyone of his shows! she even met him once while she was working!! Anyways, check out our page! thanx!

  • Go Dawgs...UGA rulez......I miss my good ole college days back in the early 90's! Great beer pubs, cheesy food, and best of all best bands!

  • My favorite current Athens band is the Wydelles (obviously they have a myspace page with some songs, for the love of god go listen to them NOW). I truly cannot recommend this band highly enough. Great lyrics, superlative musicianship, gorgeous weeping guitars. Just really pretty songs.

  • imho :)

  • omg i lovvvveeee Athens!!!!

    i live here!!!

downtown and at UGA there really is a sense of love you dont get in atlanta. Everyone is nice. Southern manners, i guess :)

  • Special Feeling in that town.

  • ...no music in athens latelly; haven't been hit by any waves, that is. comatose compared to the 80s....but I've gotten older and don't give a diddlee unless it really cuts thru the clutter...and that ain't happenin'...any where on the planet. welcome to planet m.f.

  • Awesome Vid! Check out our band, were local to Athens!

  • how does the music scene in athens today compare to it back when this video was made? is it still just as good? worse? better?

  • theres still lots of music, you just have to be 18+ to get into the shows.

  • This documentary was stellar.

  • agreed times 938457934857934857

  • Wow. UGA 1968-72 and was back 81-85. What a place and what a time. Seems like yesterday. I still go back every chance I get and it is still a very special place

  • Dexter lived in Athens for quite awhile. Some classic stories of his "existance" there can be found if you look hard enough. Suffice it to say it took a steel stomach and affinity for grime to roll the way D.R. did it back in the day.

  • saw many of these bands at 40 watt from 1984-1988. good times. damn, i miss bar-b-q killers.

  • I'm completely jealous! I was playing all this stuff on my college radio show in Ohio, wanting to visit Athens. You lucky bastards.

  • that was magnificent, cheers from athens greece mate

  • Peter Buck in his pyjamas on his porch. The anti-Hef! I loved this movie and am constantly looking for the CD or a DVD. Thanks for posting!

  • Flat Duo Jets are Chapel Hill. Dexter was class of '85 if he graduated.

  • Does anyone know the song the Flat Duo Jets play in this clip?

  • i have the video tape from 1986. still watch it. the FLAT DUO JETS were awesome. it captures the way athens used to be, but is very different today.

  • AMAZING--i didn't know this existed. i was in athens/atlanta during this period, and i saw some of the greatest bands and heard some of the greatest music, especially at 688. i was one lucky man.

  • Right there with you!

And we lived to tell about it! LOL We are lucky, lucky people! HA!

  • I disagree that they are the ONLY good band in this film, but yeah, I STILL love and listen to the Flat Duo Jets!

  • I've been all over the U.S. and everywhere I go I end up comparing it to or liking it because it reminds me of home, Athens, GA.

  • gecmısınızın amına koyum sıktıgım lavukları. gay sızın atanızndır. mitolojik pezevenkler.

  • i R.E.M. la migliore band mai esistita, la piu' carismatica, piena di significati e passione!

  • Athans 84-88 even had a band.. Great town for music, great place for college.. amazed I survived

  • Wuxtry, junkmans daughter, dixon bikes. I went to school there in 1986, what a place to be. The spring fling with Widespread Panic was awesome. Smoked lots of pot and dropped lots of acid in those days. Good memories in Athens. And you are right Athens was different than anywhere in the South.

  • The Roadhouse! Ga.Bar, Nowhere Bar, The Library, 40 Watt! Tastey World!!

Athens, amazing musicianship in a diverse cultural scene.

  • good times, good times....

  • dear god. the flat duo jets footage is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • went to UGA when out of time broke. what a time to be there

  • Does Michael Stipe have red hair? Why?

  • MIchael *Damn* Stipe has any color of hair he wants. :)

  • I always like the bleach blond in '85.

  • What the hell is wrong with you, bgoubler? I didn't think there was anyone left who still had north-south prejudices. I guess I was wrong.

  • I'd love to see the bit where Michael Stipe does his Popeye impression ... :D

  • I live in Athens, and the music scene here is still as vibrant as ever! Google AthFest 2007 and come visit.

  • very affectionate, you can only be won over by this...

  • let's please not start thinking in terms of B-52s versus R.E.M. both have brought so much to modern music. enjoy them both. love

  • That is so incredible. They sound great.

  • Peter's pijama is the best part xDD

  • Athens rules! Melting Point, Barcode, wuxtry, schoolkids records, bearfoot hookers

  • I promptly went out and got this two years ago when it was rereleased in DVD. It features a high-def recording of the live recording of "Swan Swan H".

  • Fabulazzi.

  • amazing thanks for adding!
