Rachel is too cute. Aren't you afraid she will fly off? Do you keep her wings clipped? I have a sun conure and I would be afraid to let him outside like that. He hasn't started talking yet. He will copy the dogs sound crying sometime. Any suggestions on how to get him talking. I talk to him all the time and play with him a good bit.
You may have her already trained for recall but with wings clipped, you should look into this in getting that done if not. Then short flights for a while to build up muscle tone. Chris Biro does some great work with macaws in Freeflight. User: Chrisbiro1
My families looking into getting a macaw soon, my mom had one when she was little and i hear they're Great pets. where did you purchase yours and how old was it when you got it?
Macaw is the easiest to be trained to free fly in all parrot species. I know it is risky but it is the ultimate level in having a parrot as part of the family. By the way have you been to libertywings website?
She has her wings clipped. If she would take flight her range is limited. I trust my relationship with her to know that she is ok. I would not recommend anyone else taking their bird outside unless they are experienced with knowing their bird and their potential for flight.
@IthacaJason At the risk of seeming ostentatious it would seem that her outer flight feathers are not trimmed. Macaws need only 4 flight feathers (not necessarily 2 on each wing) to fly. Just saying be careful with your baby.
You can't tell the difference with budgies untill they mature, usually when they have their first moult.
Males will develope a blue or purplish cere (nasal area), while the females will develope a brownish cere.
Or you can wait 2 years, by then most females would have laid an egg, whilst the males will be trying to chat up anything shiny. No disrespect intended to males in general, but male budgies will try to chat up anything resembling another budgie, especially reflective surfaces.
depends on the parrot species with amazons, cockatoos, african greys and macaws you can tell them apart by the size of their heads the males wil always have larger heads then females
That would be cool! Let me know if you indeed do. My Mom calls Rachel "Beaks" and well Rachel has a ton of nicknames... Beaker, Gomer Beak, Buzzard Beak, Beakasaurus, Big Birdy, Little Birdy, RachelBird, Beakus, BeakusMacaw, SquawkBox, ChickenBeak, Chicken... I'm sure I'm missing a few.
I'm getting him from the airport tomorow. I will post video of him shortly after I'm sure! :) And I have decided, yes, his name will be Beaky. He is a Green Wing Macaw. :)
I have a Miligold who's name is Loki. Her nick names are Poo Monkey, and Poo bird. LOL
we thought our bird was afraid to fly. that is until she flew. around the house across the street and intro the trees about 25 feet into the air. Poor thing crashed into god knows how many trees and we found her hanging upside down and terrified on a limb. She repeated that stunt twice. We keep her on a leash now.
You two are quite cute! You're pretty brave having her outside w/o a harness- even if her wings are clipped... yikes! I have a Quaker Parrot- who thinks he rules the world. haha not really. He is definitely my baby :-) hehe
wow, I love your macaw! She's soo cool! I've always wanted one. How do you get her to learn not to just fly away into those trees? I can't see if the wings are clipped?
Most, if not all, parrots will not fly away once the bond has been established. Clearly, even with clipped wings, he could choose to fly/glide away. Only thing they can't do is attain high altitude but they can still fly away if they wanted to get away. Unhappy unbonded parrots fly away.
Nice video, I just got my Macaw at christmas and she has been with me constantly since I work from my home. She purchased from a private owner who said she was 5 years old. I guess I lucked out since she is potty trained and will sit patiently with me at my desk or watching tv in the evening.
i want one but i'd be afraid to take it outside, my uncles african grey flew away the day its wings were clipped... also how did you train it, and specific guides you used?-NICE BIRDY!
It is a very common practice among bird owners. It is largely so your bird will not fly away and/or harm itself. Since she has always had her wings clipped since hatching, she actually doesn't know how to fly. Her instincts will cause her to fly, but she doesn't know how to maneuver well and she definitely does not know how to land. For this reason, it is actually safer to have her weeks clips, assuming we are always around to watch for any predators (hawks, dogs, cats, etc.)
careful about your bird flying. a sudden surprise to the bird and you would be surprised that they can fly anyway. mine went up at a 45 degree angle into the trees because a sprinkler fired up. took three days to get her back
If a bird is trained from the time they are young, they can be taught to not fly away. Lots of people free-fly their parrots and other birds. I wish more people would do that rather than have them clipped.
See my other reply above this one about Rachel's flight episode. Since then, I did some reseach on training your bird to not fly away and/or free-fly on queue and to come back. Unfortunately I've had Rachel for 2 years and she was with prior owners for 5. It would be really nice to have her be able to fly and be trained but I think for now I am stuck with her being clipped.
Yes, it could be impossible to train her at this late stage. My point is that with young birds, they can easily be trained to fly but not fly far, and to be able to handle their ability to fly without getting into trouble. With an older bird you might consider indoor flight (if you have the room) and outdoor with a safety harness or flight suit and tether. But I agree, an older bird who has always been clipped needs to be treated differently from one never clipped.
I totally learned that lesson with Rachel. She had her wings clipped, but obviously needed a new clipping when she was scared by some water I was pushing off the tent on the deck and she went airborne. I thought she was going to land in a tree, I called out to her hoping she would turn around and fly to me, but she turned and hit the neighbors house. When I ran over to get her she was exhausted and looked at me like to say "what did I just do Dad?"
yeah, they just don't understand. even though my bird flew, she would never fly back to me and we are best friends. i took a leash made for a kitten and attach it to the birds ring in case of an emergency, i can just pull my bird to the ground. i don't even clip her wings anymore.
I would prefer not to disclose that online, I got an extraordinary deal considering the circumstances. Normally a hand-fed breeder raised Macaw sells for around $2000.00

Very cool video - there are a lot of people that argue that "freeflighting" their birds does good for them emotionally - there's even e-mail lists devoted to that way of training parrots, but at least letting her perch outside every once and awhile's good for her too! Rachel definitely looks like she likes to play around! :)
She grew up with her wings always clipped. She knows she can fly, but its usually in a defense mechanism, and she doesn't know how to land, without "crashing". I would love to have a huge indoor enclosed atrium for her, but the wing clipping is safety for both of us.

well, i don't agree with it.
i think that if you're always around to watch for any predators then you're available to watch that she/he doesn't harm her/himself.
i plan on adopting two quaker parakeets and i won't be clipping their wings.
rebelwithoutastraw 4 years ago
anytime i take them out of the house i'll have the aviator harness on them both, and when they're inside they'll be flying.
considering she's been clipped since hatching i guess you don't have much of a choice.
i just find it sad to see a bird who doesn't fly.
