It takes true skill to use a centre pin, respect is due for using what he is comfortable with and ignoring all the idiots with all the gear and no idea!
That is an oustanding reel and the sound it makes when you get a run like that is the reason you use one. With these reels you play the fish so much more! Out of interest what strength/diameter line do you use on your pin for barbel?
@kimberreley ! I ONLY ever use 20lb braid right through its about diameter of 6lb mono, and make the hooklinks with the same braid, these days it's power pro. I love the contact with braid on centrepins and the fact you can take in line on a "running" fish in tight situations, try that with a fixed spool! Tight Lines...
dos he need to buy a what you call a decent reel.-why waste his money? even if it sounds cheap he still catching BARBEL. ---so one thing is proven here man dos not need to spend spend a lot of money ...just use really cheap ones and you will still catch barbel....or is it the time of day.
@dogboyrattin It's an Avon royal Supreme, and I have had it since new (early 70's)but only put it to use the past few seasons, I have had wye common carp to 29lb 12ozs, pike 20lb and 27lb in a session, wye record chub of 7lb 6ozs on it + many 6lb+ chub and many 10lb+ barbel.... Perchance in your infinite wisdom and knowledge of fishing reels you can suggest to me a better reel.........
why is it everyone wants to know where the barbel are coming out? why don't you do your own homework, go and walk the rivers, and look for yourself where the barbel are. i spend hours a week just walking, and finding everything about the water. when i was younger i used to actually swim on the bottom just to find what it's like, won't do that anymore though at my age.. lol
No Dave, it's fairly usual to have line from top of centerpin so u dont catch line with fingers if "batting" back to reel in as can happen when it comes from bottom of reel.
Hi mate just a small observation, did you check your watch to time each bite or more to get an idea of feeding habits? or cos you wondered when packing up time was. I only ask cos, well i dunno. just wondered lol
bite!!! jeezzzz apart from jumping out the water and shouting "im here" it does not get any better!!

I love the fact that you watch the time, that is what separates the top from average anglers.
