I am sure this issue or something similar is found in many developed countries. If satire helps to move governments, corporations, employers and voters to address the issue, then it has been worthwhile. I'd hate to play poker with him. I've never seen him before but I think he does a good job.
Why can't the American government take these simple problems and give them simple solutions? Oh yeah of course, someones feelings would get hurt. Pfft...
You can see how all the senators and representatives are trying so hard not to laugh. Especially when he says "And all the democrats who will be searching for jobs, come november"

maybe the obvious answer is for farm owners to employ Americans who are obviously out of work instead of choosing illegal citizens. I would consider that patriotic.
@Oecologeae Let me ask you? would you work for minimum wage, no health care, no pay holidays, no sick day, and no vacation. also are you going to be able to pay your car, home, and bills. Don't thinks so. So your'e solution would be raise the pay but have you forgotten that the cost of food is going to raise also. Think about it.
@chorie69 I don't get paid holidays or vacation, am paid minimum wage, however I do have minimal health insurance. I teach at a university, too. Therefore, I know first hand what it feels like to not have a lot of benefits.
I didn't offer a complete solution-the system needs a change. Perhaps the problem is the huge disparity in wages. There are revered people who get paid a lot to do very little and people who work their butts off and get paid very little, like me or, say a farm worker...
@Oecologeae Wait a minute you teach at a university, And you compare yourself to, "Oh Say.... a migrant worker"? And you say you get NO benefits? The Bureau of labor statistics say that a Postsecondary Assistant should average out a $32,770. and a Farm hand averages from 8.91 per hour. Some strawberry workers get paid 10.25 per hour. How is that Education working out for you?
@mediaphotographer You assume my wages-I make minimum wage, which is below poverty level. So, the strawberry pickers make more than a person who teaches microbiology labs. I didn't say I didn't get benefits...if you read my comment, I said I have minimal health insurance (no dental or vision). I also said a lot of people work really hard and contribute a lot to society in the grand scheme, and get paid very little. You are taking my comments and spinning them out of proportion.
Oecolongeae-Not spinhere! Benefits are usually a package. You have coverage on insurance your lucky! You teach year around? Your lucky that your working in a safe environment. What is in your opinion, a relative minimum working wage?
@BillClausen Norway has more immigrants than you might imagine but doesn't have the mass agricultural industry that the US has, for reasons of geography and climate. Nor does it have the vast disparities in wealth seen in US society. The latter point is crucial and is due to the different cultural values between the two. The Norwegian system isn't perfect but in my opinion it's highly preferable to the capitalism über alles model of the US.
@Olson50 That's self-righteousness Scandinavian propaganda talking. Norway no doubt is the better place to live, but that is not because the US is "capitalism über alles". The US has a very large government apparatus which makes everything it can its business. It provides life support to failing businesses (if they're large enough), imposes the will of certain private companies on the populace, and enacts legislation at the request of corporations. That's NOT capitalism.
im 28 yr and i feel so lucky that steven colbert and jon stewart are on in my era, as long as they been on, i haven't seen anyone be consistently as good as they are.
@Superawsomed you obviously don't understand Stephen Colbert humor. He is using sarcasm. Kinda like how he makes himself look like an ultra-conservative on his show, when he is not. Which is funny.

I am Latino. I live in Miami fl, currently attending nova university(pharmacy). I have earned scholarships. I have a social security number but I don't have a green card or citizenship. This will be my last year @ nova for my bachelors. I won't have a job after I graduate because I don't have papers. Was this a waste of my money? I feel so disappointed with all the republicans in the senate who voted no to the dream act. I wish they were In my situation. They don't really care about us, the hav
"I'm not a fan of the government doing anything" and the other idiots laugh as if its a storyline thats made up and unrealistic....I personally think its funny only because hey it is the truth
fuck this motherfucker, if the americans can pick up their crops then why the hell do they hire immigrants to work on their farms. you know why cause they are too fucking laisy to do it themselves.
I dont have to say names or political parties because in the end i'm sure they all thought he was there to make them feel dumb and quite honestly they should feel stupid. After spending so much time in trying to come up w/ ways to fix the immigration issue. The only thing they know how to know is how to stick their noses into other countries where they shouldn't be.Don't get me wrong i'm not a hater of national grounds nor international grounds.
@JimboVids . jimbo jimbo jimbo trust me you would not lasty one day picking your own beans. you really want to spend a whole day bent over in 100 plus degree weather for minimum wage? or picking ice cold lettuce? get real man that work is for real men and women who unlike you, probably had no choice but to leave their homeland. do you really think they want to be doing that type of work?
Why do Republicans lack a sense of humour? The people laughing are clearly liberals while republicans always appear as if they have a stick up their ass!
There is crude, rude, but there is also Stephen Colbert.....intelligent, and gutsy. What he did to George Bush at the dinner was something I couldnt think possible in my wildest dreams. Why is it that comediens have no trouble speaking the truth while serious "journalists" run from it? And a bigger question....how do serious journalists keep a straight face reporting the insanity at these meetings?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so sad...reflects the U.S.A.'s decline...letting a comedian waste the time of Congress...why don't they let people who are actually directly affected by the bill to testify instead of a spoiled brat like Colbert
@antmlova1 There's a difference between a comedian and satirist. The fact Americans are unable to differentiate between the two is what reflects the decline of this country. We have become unintelligent, unquestioning, opinionated, partisan lemmings. You, my friend, are one of them.
@antmlova1 You're kidding... That "comedian" along with others from Comedy Central is one of the hardest hitting social commentators out there. What should REALLY sadden you is the fact that the hardest hitting journalism and toughest questions of the day come from a channel called "Comedy Central" but I guess you're too busy judging him by his occupation to actually hear what he said.
@cort87 Absolutely but it's more than that. I remember when Jon Stewart had that dude from the crazy finance show on The Daily Show and told him flat out "It's not a f*&)in' game." The Internet and news stations were on fire. In the meantime, those who offer themselves as "genuine" political pundits have to perform inane stunts for even a smidgen of the same attention e.g. Glenn Beck wanting to recite Martin Luther King's speech.
Thank God for comedy. We'd all go apeshit without a good laugh.
Yes, I've never seen a single person become the catalyst for the self-destruction of a session of Congress and an entire political party. But, now what will we do until November?!?
(Would've been nice if the 111th had spent the time extending the Bush tax cuts instead of watching a clown show. But hey, looks who's in charge.)
I notice that Conservatives have become eerily quiet. They must figure that there's nothing left to say - talking now is like trying to teach a pig to sing. Moreover, it's unnecessary. They know that they can sit back and watch the remainder of the tragic 111th congress collapse, as today's pathetic subcommittee testimony illustrated, secure in the knowledge that the circus will all end in November.
I truly admire Stephen Colbert. Using the platform of comedy, he manages to get across the nuggets of truth inside an issue. He nails those who purport to be telling the truth, when those "truth tellers" are really blowing smoke up our butts.
I pray that Stephen continues to entertain and educate the American public.
LOL Republicans are hypocrites, they love the immigrant workers because they make them LOTS of MONEY but refuse to give them anything for it! That's the GOP way! Not the American way!
Today's Democratic party is right of center on many if not most issues compared to the Reagan administration, incl taxes (Reagan raised taxes every year of his presidency and the rates were higher), global affairs (Reagan negotiated with terrorists, wanted to cut and run in Lebanon, etc), immigration (Reagan pushed for amnesty; Obama wants to tighten the border). I could go on all day. And yes, compared to every civilized country on earth, our Left is equivalent to their Right.
@Dorche76 Stereotypes,Innuendo's and Baseless Arguments are you Libs creed. Facts.......forget it! When you weezles are backed into a corner......you wip out the Race card.......lol!! ....(simpletons) So don't give me your drivel about being "shallow"....yeah, right.....we're not buying it. Keep following your Obama, "the Savior", and he'll lead you and the country off a cliff and you'll be on his heels licking his boots like a good Drone.
@eatmelibs Also, weren't you kissing W's ass for 8 years as he drove this country to hell in a hand basket? Yep. Typical republican. Your candidate fucks stuff up, you blame the other guy and then claim he screwed up everything.
@Dorche76 "fucks stuff up"..Wow! Insightfull! (what an idiot) What did he (Bush), "Fuck-up"? Can you be a little more specific?...No, you can't. Why? Because you're a fuck tard. You can barely chew gum and walk at the same time...a typical Idiot Drone. You just spew shit out of your gaping hole.As for your "Poor White American" comment....Atleast I am Proud to say yes, "I'm a White American" and Not "a White German American"...I'm assuming you testify as being a "Black African American".
@Dorche76 .....and if you hate this country so much, "Mr. Black African American", move back to Africa and see how much better you'd have it.......moron. By the way, you might wanta brush up on your history. You do know Republicans fought tooth and nail against the Dems for your rights. (History's a Bitch, isn't?)
@eatmelibs That is correct. Eisnehower laid the ground work with his Civil Rights Act of 1957. It took the Republicans to overwhelm the Democrats congress against the bill .Notably the infamous KKK klans man, Sen Robert Byrd, who's filibuster against the bill ,was the longest in history.
I see what you're doing. Trying to make liberals think that conservatives are so stupid and ineffectual that there's no reason to get excited. Good job!!
What a waste of time.

Give illegal immigrants fair pay and working conditions -> expensive fruits & veggies.

This will be my last year @ nova for my bachelors. I won't have a job after I graduate because I don't have papers. Was this a waste of my money? I feel so disappointed with all the republicans in the senate who voted no to the dream act. I wish they were In my situation. They don't really care about us, the hav

MexCan65 1 year ago
Hahaha, like congress I havent read it either lmao.

so sad...reflects the U.S.A.'s decline...letting a comedian waste the time of Congress...why don't they let people who are actually directly affected by the bill to testify instead of a spoiled brat like Colbert
antmlova1 1 year ago
@antmlova1 There's a difference between a comedian and satirist. The fact Americans are unable to differentiate between the two is what reflects the decline of this country. We have become unintelligent, unquestioning, opinionated, partisan lemmings. You, my friend, are one of them.
rjs01007 1 year ago 3
@antmlova1 You're kidding... That "comedian" along with others from Comedy Central is one of the hardest hitting social commentators out there. What should REALLY sadden you is the fact that the hardest hitting journalism and toughest questions of the day come from a channel called "Comedy Central" but I guess you're too busy judging him by his occupation to actually hear what he said.
To each his own. Cheers.
kevaughn69 1 year ago 20
@kevaughn69 Satire has been the root of political enlightenment since the beginning of societies.
cort87 1 year ago
@cort87 Absolutely but it's more than that. I remember when Jon Stewart had that dude from the crazy finance show on The Daily Show and told him flat out "It's not a f*&)in' game." The Internet and news stations were on fire. In the meantime, those who offer themselves as "genuine" political pundits have to perform inane stunts for even a smidgen of the same attention e.g. Glenn Beck wanting to recite Martin Luther King's speech.
Thank God for comedy. We'd all go apeshit without a good laugh.

@myriadcorp

I pray that Stephen continues to entertain and educate the American public.

anything else I need to correct you about? Oh yeah, your assertion that the Democrat party is right of center baffles me. Compared to who? Europe?
SoFlaPatriot 1 year ago
@SoFlaPatriot

(History's a Bitch, isn't?)
eatmelibs 1 year ago
@eatmelibs That is correct. Eisnehower laid the ground work with his Civil Rights Act of 1957. It took the Republicans to overwhelm the Democrats congress against the bill .Notably the infamous KKK klans man, Sen Robert Byrd, who's filibuster against the bill ,was the longest in history.
