  • ive got 2 trailers that i carry heavy loads with, i made a slideshow of them the other day, will have to get a video of me using them now that i have the camera back

  • It's fun to make stuff DIY. However, it's very worthwhile to get a solid, well designed trailer that can carry more weight, is easier to load and detach, lighter, no 'safety' concerns. Especially if you need to use it everyday. We really undervalue bicycles but if you think about it $2K on a good trailer that replaces a car is a bargain especially when you factor in no insurance, no gas, much cheaper maintenance. I make some bicyclefamily . ca. Also good design at tonystrailers . com

  • Cheers Bruce, thanks for a great video. I'm in the design stage and your video brought me up short. I planned to have a large plastic container on a horizontal chassis & central axle, with the usual up-and-over connection to the seat post, mainly for collecting firewood and doing the supermarket run. Now I'm wondering about a similar arrangement to yours using an old ladder, but it'll be hard to keep the c of g over the axle unless it's a short span. + other issues. I'll video it when I'm done.

  • Not exactly what I was looking for, but I wanted to say your vision was very informative and done very well.

  • you are a genius.

  • very helpful thank you

  • チェク ・私の ebike2011 を構築するは非常に安価に !

  • thank you

  • great vid, have been looking at getting a bike trailer to put my fishing tackle on, most of the lakes around here are only 30 min`s by bike, i was a little worried about the weight on one of these shop bought one`s but I'm glad Ive seen your vid. hard ware shop for me tomorrow. :)

  • @bigkips Hi - thanks for the comments. If you create a trailer, maybe upload a video response so others can see your version of it. If you do, mention where you are, I wondered if it was Canada - I lived in Montreal ten years and Toronto East on Lake Ontario five. The extra-long trailer was bought in Toronto, I used to salvage and cart home all kinds of rubbish-day and other renovating treasures. Kind regards, Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

  • @PalmyBruce hi bruce ......no im not from canada but i am from devon in the uk, thanks for your repl.

  • Thank you!

  • Hey mate, awesome idea and very inspirational. I'll be making one soon and might even upload a video when its done.

  • Hi Bruce, I have been looking for CHEAP bike traiker '4eva' any way My son happened to have oneof those carts ( not any more ) and I ended up with a Mobility scooter (CHEAP As). Well I happen to have 2 Mokos (GrandKids). On Beautiful day along Petone Beach you might see us Cruzin along. I was able to convert thier stroller safley to the cart so they can lie down, CHEERS YOU !!!!!

    Nana Lez

P.s I was looking at his golf cart .......NO No No

  • @v8kiwi Hi Nana, interesting comment. I'd looked at strollers and golf carts. Some of them are really good strong construction and look very smart too. I'm in Palmy, two hours away from Wellington, but if I'm ever on Petone beach and see your rig there, I'll say hi. Regards, Bruce.

  • I did this same thing back in 1995 and it worked well. You have to make sure that you slow down on corners due ti the too narrow wheel base and the angle imposed on the frame tubes. It will flip very easy with any kind of a load. but it pulls well and you are right it is the cheapest way to get a very strong and quite capable trailer.I used mine for laundry, groceries and whatever.

  • I also used a bit larger of a hand truck...with a wider wheelbase and fatter(roll easier)wheels. HT cost be about 50 bux and I hooked it to my seat post with a connector I made from an old bike tire tube.

  • @uncleboob Hi Jo, Yes, I switched from the originals in the hope of reducing drag, but regretted it - the drag was similar, the wheels stuck up into the load area, & the spoked wheels weren't as strong. I admit though that I have sometimes carried extremely heavy loads. Once when moving houses, using one of the red hand trucks, when I precariously hand-lowered it down some railway station steps, I actually sheared all the hub bolts of one of the wheels. My exercise weights were part of the load.

  • Great trailer that i'm going to go and make in a minute! I needed a trailer to carry scrap bike on and this looks to be ideal. In the later larger trailers did you use the existing axle and then add bigger wheels?

    cheers

    jo

  • I had to hobble the thing to Wellington Railway Station, find a mechanic. He gave me bolts to get it going again.

  • @PalmyBruce A hand truck, a HAND TRUCK modified into a bike trailer. :) Big man I've got to hand it to you, you are slick!

  • @Tsuruta1 Thanks for your kind approval. I agree, it is very funny - so simple, cheap, available, you can chain it with the bike if you use a 1 metre chain, & not even care if it's stolen - just buy another one. I just refused to pay hundreds of dollars amounts for the flimsy little aluminium ones in the shops. This type of trailer carried a 300kg load of stuff from a waste dump to home once. Most cars couldn't do that without a strong roofrack or trailer. Cheers, Bruce Thomson in New Zealand

  • @PalmyBruce You're welcome, anytime. :) I have 2 bikes, and I told my sister about your innovation and she just happened to purchase a pre owned bike recently, AND she also happened to have a hand truck. We both looked at your applique, so we will be looking to find ways of hooking it up ! :)

    BE BLESSED!

  • That's awesome. Good ingenuity. Thats so much better than spending a few hundred dollars on a bike trailer.

    Well made video.
