When I sang this song on my production floor...many people including the non bengalis also started humming...the bengalis joined me....in Hyderabad........
THOUGH I AM FROM SOUTH AND SETTLED IN MUMBAI SINCE CHILDHOOD, THIS SONG HAS REVIVED MEMORIES OF MY SCHOOLING DAYS IN THE EARLY 1970's WHEREIN THIS WAS TAUGHT TO US AS A REGIONAL SONG. I USED TO SING ONLY THE CHORUS PART (ie., HAI RE HAI, LOGON BHOI...) IN THE GROUP SINGING.
THIS TUNE BY LATE SALIL DA WAS UTILIZED IN THE 1956 HINDI CLASSIC "AAWAZ"; BUT UNFORTUNATELY DELETED.
BENGALI VERSION BY HEMANT DA SOUNDS SWEETER THAN THE HINDI VERSION,
@sharadowasdr: This song came out in the early 1950s in order to encourage the newly independent citizens into nation building, which was predominantly an agarian society at that time. This is one of Salil's better known gono-jagoron or mass-awakening songs. The song's mesmerizing melody is immortalized by Hemanto's magical voice. This song has been used as a backdrop in numerous folk dances. some are on Youtube.
@Musicpremik thanks for that. I got confused because there's a reference to "Bargi" somewhere in the song. For that I thought it may be a folk song from the mid 18th century when the marathas invaded bengal. The raiders were called "Bargi" by the local folk. Also there's an interesting legend relating to the origin of the "Chompa" flower and the Parul flower

All this talk about the pace of the song being very fast needs clarification.... this is the original version of the song recorded by Salil Choudhury in 1954 in 78 rpm..... later on Hemanta had recorded this many times at a comparatively slower pace... however this pace suits this song the best since this is folk dance number.
I had first heard this TUNE as hindi song of film Awaz by lata "Dhitnag dhitang bole, dil tere liye dole........a bit slower. Now I heard this original tune both of them are just top class by Salil.

Great song. Thanks for this entry. I somehow feel that the song is too fast paced as it appears here! Any clarification on that?

I think there is a problem with the speed. The original song is slightly slower. Is it a remake of Hemanta's original song ?
gre8mind 2 years ago
@gre8mind
You are right about speed. It would appear to be unnatural for Hemant Kumar to sing so fast. However nobody is authentically saying about it.
